Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spinal disorders in very young children may be caused by a variety of conditions. The treatment of such conditions is often challenging due to the age of the patient and the progressive nature of the deformity. There also may be associated problems such as congenital anomalies, respiratory insufficiency, and neurological problems. Depending on the etiology of the deformity, these children are often cared for by multiple specialists including pediatricians, pediatric orthopaedists or orthopaedic spine surgeons, neurologists, pediatric surgeons, pediatric neurosurgeons, oncologists, and/or pulmonologists. Health professionals in all of the mentioned disciplines are involved in the management of these patients, which is why compiling a comprehensive textbook that is not limited to orthopedic specialists is essential. This textbook will effectively help to standardize the care of these patients. Furthermore, other professionals such as nurses, physical therapists and healthcare professionals in training are usually not familiar with these conditions and are in need of a reference book to consult when caring for children with spinal deformities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The March of medicine through Wisconsin is a fascinating story, full of triumph and failure, heroes and quacks, and -- overriding all -- stuttering steps toward a modern system of health care that has witnessed the doubling of life expectancies among Wisconsin citizens. This is the story of medicine in Wisconsin, told by professional historians, each speaking from his or her area of specialty. Since territorial times, the physician has risen from a position of marginal respectability to one of unparalleled admiration and trust. The hospital, unknown to residents just 150 years ago, has become a symbol of modern science and a source of civic pride. Knowledge of disease has revolutionized health practices. The purpose of this book is not to celebrate the achievements of Wisconsin's physicians, notable as they have been, but to look critically and sympathetically at the state's medical record. The contributors make no exaggerated claims for Wisconsin. Occasionally, the state led the nation in health matters, but more often it followed the example of others. With this book, the reader will come to understand how and why Wisconsin's medical practice evolved. - Jacket flap.

Presented in a systematic manner, this work reviews epidemiological studies which have shown that various mechanical factors play a significant role in the onset of chronic low-back pain. To provide you with a better understanding of the information in these chapters, ample illustrations and tables are included. At the end of each chapter, the reader is directed to even further in-depth information. It is the intent of the authors that this writing will promote further biomechanical research. Book excerpt: ‘KUMBA AFRICA’, is a compilation of African Short Stories written as fiction by Sampson Ejike Odum, nostalgically taking our memory back several thousands of years ago in Africa, reminding us about our past heritage. It digs deep into the traditional life style of the Africans of old, their beliefs, their leadership, their courage, their culture, their wars, their defeat and their victories long before the emergence of the white man on the soil of Africa. As a talented writer of rich resource and superior creativity, armed with in-depth knowledge of different cultures and traditions in Africa, the Author throws light on the rich cultural heritage of the people of Africa when civilization was yet unknown to the people. The book reminds the readers that the Africans of old kept their pride and still enjoyed their own lives. They celebrated victories when wars were won, enjoyed their New yam festivals and villages engaged themselves in seasonal wrestling contest etc; Early morning during harmattan season, they gathered firewood and made fire inside their small huts to hit up their bodies from the chilling cold of the harmattan. That was the Africa of old we will always remember. In Africa today, the story have changed. The people now enjoy civilized cultures made possible by the influence of the white man through his scientific and technological process. Yet there are some uncivilized places in Africa whose people haven’t tested or felt the impact of civilization. These people still maintain their ancient traditions and culture. In everything, we believe that days when people paraded barefooted in Africa to the swarmp to tap palm wine and fetch firewood from there farms are almost fading away. The huts are now gradually been replaced with houses built of blocks and beautiful roofs. Thanks to modern civilization. Donkeys and camels are no longer used for carrying heavy loads for merchants. They are now been replaced by heavy trucks and lorries. African traditional methods of healing are now been substituted by hospitals. In all these, I will always love and remember Africa, the home of my birth and must respect her cultures and traditions as an AFRICAN AUTHOR.

Book excerpt: The twelfth-century French poet Chrétien de Troyes is a major figure in European literature. His courtly romances fathered the Arthurian tradition and influenced countless other poets in England as well as on the continent. Yet because of the difficulty of capturing his swift-moving style in translation, English-speaking audiences are largely unfamiliar with the pleasures of reading his poems. Now, for the first time, an experienced translator of medieval verse who is himself a poet provides a translation of Chrétien’s major poem, Yvain, in verse that fully and satisfyingly captures the movement, the sense, and the spirit of the Old French original. Yvain is a courtly romance with a moral tenor; it is ironic and sometimes bawdy; the poetry is crisp and vivid. In addition, the psychological and the socio-historical perceptions of the poem are of profound literary and historical importance, for it evokes the emotions and the values of a flourishing, vibrant medieval past.

Book excerpt: Shock therapy is making a comeback today in the treatment of serious mental illness. Despite its reemergence as a safe and effective psychiatric tool, however, it continues to be shrouded by a longstanding negative public image, not least due to films such as the classic One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest, where the inmate of a psychiatric clinic (played by Jack Nicholson) is subjected to electro-shock to curb his rebellious behavior. Beyond its vilification in popular culture, the stereotype of convulsive therapy as a dangerous and inhumane practice is fuelled by professional posturing and public misinformation. Electroconvulsive therapy, or ECT, has in the last thirty years been considered a method of last resort in the treatment of debilitating depression, suicidal ideation, and other forms of mental illness. Yet, ironically, its effectiveness in treating these patients would suggest it as a frontline therapy, bringing relief from acute symptoms and saving lives. This book was released on 2002-11-01 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA), in a collaborative effort with other Federal agencies, states, and private industry, is developing Ecological Soil Screening Levels (Eco-SSLs) for ecological risk assessment of contaminants at Superfund sites. Earthworm (Eisenia fetida) cocoon production and survival tests were conducted in a Sassafras sandy loam soil that supports relatively high bioavailability of barium (Ba), beryllium (Be), manganese (Mn), and antimony (Sb). For the metals tested, cocoon production was a more sensitive endpoint than was survival. Bounded Lowest Observed Effect Concentrations (LOECs) (mg kg-1) for cocoon production, as determined by analysis of variance (ANOVA), were 83, 86, 433, and 1236 for Be, Sb, Ba, and Mn, as compared to LOECs for survival of 110, 697, 1585, and 2222, respectively. Bounded No Observed Effect Concentrations (NOECs) (mg kg-1) for cocoon production, as determined by ANOVA, were 57, 60,258, and 1111 for Be, Sb, Ba, and Mn, as compared to NOECs for survival of 83, 617,1348, and 1444, respectively. Non-linear regression analysis of cocoon production data showed that the relative toxicity (EC20 mg kg-1) of the four metals was in the order of Sb (30) = Be (52) > Ba (370) > Mn ( 629). These results will be submitted to the Eco-SSL Work ou for review and inclusion in their database.
