Book excerpt: In this study, I examined relationship among social identity and attitudinal variables and academic achievement in a group of 128 American Indian (AI) high school students. Analyses were first conducted in order to explore whether AI students differed from European American (EA) students on measures of ethnic identity, school identification, perceived barriers, perceived discrimination, and abstract, concrete, and ambivalent educational utility. With the exception of school identification, statistically significant differences and large effect sizes between the AI and EA participants were found on all major variables, with the AI participants reporting higher scores on all measures except GPA. EA participants reported a higher GPA. Additional analyses explored the contribution of ethnic identity towards the variance of AI students' GPA and school identification beyond the contribution from perceived barriers, perceived discrimination, and abstract, concrete, and ambivalent educational utility. Ethnic identity was a significant predictor of school identification. None of the variables, including ethnic identity, was a significant predictor of GPA. Final analysis explored the existence of clusters of AI participants based on ethnic identity and school identification. Two groups of AI students who varied on their level of school identification were identified. These groups did not differ on all major variables. I suggest that many of the statistically in-significant findings are due to the ethnically homogeneous context in which the AI participants come from. I argue that ethnicity-related attitudinal and social identity variables are more important predictors of achievement in contexts in which ethnicity is more salient, and are less important in heterogeneous populations.

A three-factor model of ethnic identity included (a) Native identification, a subjective sense of commitment to Native culture, (b) Anglo, identification, an analogous sense of belonging to the dominant culture, and (c) group-esteem, evaluative appraisals of one's heritage ethnic group. Self-esteem was operationalized with measures of global self-esteem, academic self-concept, and social self-concept. Participants were 164 Native and 150 Anglo grades 10 and 11 students attending a high school in the US Southwest. Confirmatory Factor Analyses and mixed ANOVAs assessed the cross-cultural applicability of study measures. Hierarchical regression was used to evaluate four specific hypotheses. Overall, Native youth had lower self-esteem than Anglo adolescents, but the difference depended on the facet of self-esteem. It was largest for academic self-concept. For global self-esteem the difference was close to statistical significance. No difference was apparent for social self-concept. Hypothesis 1, that Native youths' level of Native identification would be positively associated with self-esteem was not supported. The second hypothesis, that Native youths' level of Anglo identification would be positively associated with their self-esteem, was supported by positive associations between Anglo, identification and both academic and social self-concept. A third hypothesis that predicted a positive association between Native adolescents' group-esteem and self-esteem was supported by positive associations between group-esteem and each measure of self-esteem. The fourth hypothesis implied that association between group-esteem and self-esteem would grow stronger as Native identification increased, but results revealed that as Native identification increased, the association between group-esteem and self-esteem became weaker. The results are discussed considering three theoretical frameworks that inspired the hypotheses (i.e., identity theory; symbolic interactionism; and, a Jamesian account of self-esteem). None of the frameworks accounted for the overall pattern of associations between the three-factors of the model and self-esteem. An alternative interpretation is presented, emphasizing the importance of minority group status as an influence on Native young peoples' self-esteem. The limitations of the study are explored, along with their implications for future theorizing and research in this area. Implications for prevention programs aimed at Native youth are discussed.

Book excerpt: This dissertation study explored both the influence of academic support and aspects of identity that contribute to American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) eighth grade student's Self-concept in math and reading. The secondary data analysis utilized the National Indian Education Study (NIES) 2011 secured data set, a part of the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) report card. Participants included 10,300 AI/ANs from public schools (96%), Bureau of Indian Education schools (6%), and private schools (2%) located in 12 different states. The NIES (2011) survey provides student-reported responses on educational perceptions and experiences. On average, males rated themselves higher in math self-concept, whereas females rated themselves higher in reading self-concept. Students rated the amount of two types of academic support received from parent/family, teachers and peers, homework help and academic planning. Parent/family academic planning support was a strong predictor of self-concept in math and reading. Parent homework support significantly predicted math self-concept, but not reading self-concept. Students who reported never receiving academic planning support from their teachers in the past year had low self-concept in math and reading, yet receiving guidance four or more times per year only predicted higher math self-concept. Peer academic planning support predicted female student's self-concept in math and reading. No relationship was found for male students. Cultural identity also showed gender differences. Female students who reported knowing a lot about important AI/AN issues had a higher reading self-concept, and knowing a lot about AI/AN history predicted a higher math self-concept. Male students who attended several of their own AI/AN cultural gatherings/ceremonies had a lower math self-concept. Ethnic identity is highly complex. In this study, students are identified as AI/AN based on parent report. Research could benefit from examining differences between students who self-identify as AI/AN, identify with more than one ethnicity, and do not identify as AI/AN. Also needed are comparisons between students who live on AI/AN reservations or villages versus those who do not. Other important findings and implications for practice are discussed.
