Book excerpt: AMERICAN GOVERNMENT: HISTORICAL, POPULAR, AND GLOBAL PERSPECTIVES, Second Edition, No Separate Policy chapters version broadens students’ understanding of American government by encouraging them to examine the subject matter through three distinct perspectives. Organized institutions first, Dautrich/Yalof offers a detailed overview of the rich historical evolution of American government, a thorough examination of the public’s influence on government and public policy, and a fresh look at American government from the perspective of others around the world. The enhanced student focus of the second edition is evident in the new learning objectives, critical thinking questions, and the new Your Perspective feature, which illustrates the many ways students have and can become involved in American government. With its three vivid perspectives and updated coverage and analysis through the 2010 midterm elections, Dautrich/Yalof is an exciting, student-friendly text that offers students a new way to understand and appreciate American government. This book uniquely addresses the concepts of this course through the following perspectives. Historical Perspective-A look at how course concepts relate events in the past to current events. Through such a view, students gain an understanding that the political process is sound, has worked for years and will work for years to come. Popular Perspective- Students who are provided a way to take the political winds of change associated with popular opinion are able to understand why certain events transpired the way they did and gain a deeper appreciation for the nuances of the American political system. The Political Perspective provides them with such an experience. Global Perspective- Not to be confused with a comparative analysis, the Global perspectives allow an instructor to demonstrate how the US political system is viewed by the media, political elites and the public in other parts of the world. Book excerpt: This encyclopedia provides a real-world guide to American political journalism and news coverage in the 21st century, from the most influential media organizations and pundits to the controversies and practices shaping modern-day political journalism. Over the last 20 years, political campaigns and the media that cover them have been fundamentally altered by a mix of technology and money. This timely work surveys the legal, financial, and technological changes that have swept through the political process, putting those changes in context to help readers appreciate how they affect what the public learns—and doesn't learn—about the candidates and lawmakers at the local, state, and federal levels. The encyclopedia offers a critical examination of a broad range of topics organized in a narrative, A-to-Z format. Written by journalists and political experts, the two volumes cover the major issues, organizations, and trends affecting both politics and the coverage of political campaigns. Some 200 entries treat everything from news organizations, think tanks, and significant individuals to questions concerning money, advertising, and campaign tactics. Objective, unbiased, and comprehensive, the encyclopedia is an unequaled resource for anyone seeking to understand American political journalism and news coverage in the 21st century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is the first interpretive text for the study of American exceptionalism and the first overall assessment of geographic, political, economic, social, and cultural aspects of the American past written from a global perspective. Russo argues that life in the United States can be better understood if it is examined from either a wider perspective-the English speaking world, the Western Hemisphere, Western Civilization-or a narrower perspective-regional and local variations. Even when the Americans were innovative-in their multi-ethnic and multi-racial society, in their egalitarian social beliefs, in their political democracy-their innovations were soon copied by others. Therefore, Russo argues, they are no longer distinctly American. Using nations as the basis for fields of study can both reveal and distort the historical record. When one considers different perspectives, America's uniqueness recedes in importance. American culture was a variant of a wider Western culture. The American economy was an extension of Western capitalism, whether agrarian, commercial, or industrial. American society was a Western society with racial castes and multi-ethnic additions to the population. American government functioned like other Western governments, even with innovative forms: Republican, then democratic. The American past is thus seen to be far less distinctive than previous syntheses have assumed.
