Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Forestry, Vol. 27: January to December, 1921 During the sessions of last winter and spring bills were introduced in both Houses of Congress providing funds for the establishment of forest experiment stations, under the direction of the Secretary of Agriculture through the Forest Service, in five of these regions, namely, the Northeastern States, the Southern Appals chian Mountains, the Southern pine region, the Lake States, and California, in the last two regions in co-opera tion with the Universities of Minnesota and California. The bills were referred to the Committees on Agri culture and Forestry, where they are still reposing, awaiting a call to action. Many local people in various regions took an active interest in these projects last year but it was not sufficient to force them to the front. Are we to secure their passage during the coming session of Congress? It will require greatly increased efforts to secure favorable consideration for these bills among the many that are demanding early attention. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Journal of Forestry, 1919, Vol. 17: Official Organ of the Society of American Foresters, Combining the Proceedings of the Society and the Forestry Quarterly During the past five years there has been a cumulative realization of the fact that the low scale of salaries paid by the Forest Service was causing a shortage of competent men on the National Forests.' The cost of living has so far outstripped the almost negligible promotions allowed by Congress that there has been an increasing annual exodus of leadership, experience, and ability - technical and non-technical into other fields. This fact is so well known as to require no further proof or mention. The purpose of this paper is to point out two facts which I believe have so far been realized only dimly, if at all, by the profession: First, that the salary situation threatens the ultimate success of our great experiment in national forestry; second, that really logical methods of redress have not yet been attempted.
