Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Responding to President Lincoln's initial call for troops, the 18th New York Infantry emerged as one of the Excelsior State's first regiments and mustered many of its earliest volunteers. Formed of companies from across the state, the unit saw combat early, suffering the first casualties of the Bull Run campaign when they were ambushed on the march four days before the battle. As part of the Army of the Potomac, they fought at Gaines's Mill, Crampton's Gap, Antietam, Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville. Drawing on numerous sources including several unpublished letters and diaries, this book gives the complete history of the 18th--from the first enlistee to the last surviving veteran (who died in 1938)--with an emphasis on the experiences of individual soldiers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recruited primarily from the gentle farmlands of central New York, the men of the Twenty-Sixth New York Volunteer Infantry were among the first to answer their nation's call during the Civil War. Death soon wrapped its cold arms around the regiment, whose losses were great. More often than not the Twenty-Sixth was placed in difficult or impossible tactical situations, which resulted in their being forced to leave the field in disorder. They did their best. This work covers the regiment's entire two-year term of enlistment from May 1861 to May 1863. It draws upon numerous unpublished letters and diaries from the collections of individuals, private libraries and public institutions, as well as contemporary newspapers and obscure government documents. Appendices cover the order of command within campaigns and post assignments. Also included is a regimental roster listing the 1,182 men who served in the Twenty-Sixth.

It traces the transition from smoothbore to rifle and the development of the Minie ball. The range and accuracy of various weapons are discussed and several tables illustrate the increased capabilities of the rifle. Tactics to exploit the new weapon are examined, primarily those of William Hardee. Using Hardee’s tactics as the standard rifle tactics before the war, the change in how infantry soldiers fought is documented with two battle analyses. The 1862 Maryland Campaign shows the start of tactical evolution as soldiers seek cover, expend large quantities of ammunition and are decisively engaged at greater distances. During the 1864 Wilderness-Spotsylvania battle, the concepts of fortification defense and skirmish offense take hold. Examining several current books that deal with the rifle and its effects, the thesis concludes that the rifle’s increased firepower was a major factor in the move away from Hardee’s formation tactics.

Book excerpt: The Story of a Common Soldier of Army Life in the Civil War 1861-1865 Leander Stillwell The 61st Regiment Illinois Volunteer Infantry was an infantry regiment that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. The 61st Illinois Infantry was originally organized at Carrollton, Illinois and mustered into Federal service on February 5, 1862. The regiment suffered 3 officers and 34 enlisted men who were killed in action or mortally wounded and 4 officers and 183 enlisted men who died of disease, for a total of 224 fatalities. The American Civil War, also known as the War Between the States, the War of the Rebellion, or simply the Civil War (see naming), was a civil war fought from 1861 to 1865 in the United States after several Southern slave states declared their secession and formed the Confederate States of America (the "Confederacy" or the "South"). The states that remained were known as the "Union" or the "North". The war had its origin in the fractious issue of slavery, especially the extension of slavery into the western territories. Foreign powers did not intervene. After four years of bloody combat that left over 600,000 soldiers dead and destroyed much of the South's infrastructure, the Confederacy collapsed, slavery was abolished, and the difficult Reconstruction process of restoring national unity and guaranteeing rights to the freed slaves began.
