Book excerpt: Excerpt from America and Her Army American Government supplies the usual food and clothing to the army, and has done it, upon the whole, regularly and copiously. But the agents of the American people are every where present with ample stores of everything which men require, to place it beyond all doubt that the American soldier shall suffer no discomfort which it is possible to avert. There is a perfect fitness in this arrangement. For of this war it may be said, without qualification or reserve, that it is the war or the people. N 0 Government made it. It was from the outset the fixed determination of the Northern people that the nation should not submit to dismemberment. This is their own war, fought by their own sons and brothers, for the accomplishment of purposes which are dearer to them than life. It is fitting that they should assume the care of an army which is so emphatically their own. We do not understand aright the spirit in which the American people are fighting out this mighty quarrel till we know what care they bestow upon their soldiers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Army The manuscript of this volume was begun before the outbreak of the present war in Europe, with a view to setting forth the conditions and methods of administration of the American army, and the urgent need of nationalizing and organizing our military resources while there is no war-cloud on our horizon. During all the earlier years of the Republic, the limitless faith in the ocean barriers guarding our coasts prevented a hearing of those who urged a definite military policy for the nation. Leviathan passenger ships, each capable of trans porting a brigade such as fought the battles of the Civil War, have changed all that. We are now at peace with the world and the prayers of every American household are for a continuation of that desirable status for all time, but our interests are too great for us to occupy forever the safe side of every question. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American Military History provides the United States Army-in particular, its young officers, NCOs, and cadets-with a comprehensive but brief account of its past. The Center of Military History first published this work in 1956 as a textbook for senior ROTC courses. Since then it has gone through a number of updates and revisions, but the primary intent has remained the same. Support for military history education has always been a principal mission of the Center, and this new edition of an invaluable history furthers that purpose. The history of an active organization tends to expand rapidly as the organization grows larger and more complex. The period since the Vietnam War, at which point the most recent edition ended, has been a significant one for the Army, a busy period of expanding roles and missions and of fundamental organizational changes. In particular, the explosion of missions and deployments since 11 September 2001 has necessitated the creation of additional, open-ended chapters in the story of the U.S. Army in action. This first volume covers the Army's history from its birth in 1775 to the eve of World War I. By 1917, the United States was already a world power. The Army had sent large expeditionary forces beyond the American hemisphere, and at the beginning of the new century Secretary of War Elihu Root had proposed changes and reforms that within a generation would shape the Army of the future. But world war-global war-was still to come. The second volume of this new edition will take up that story and extend it into the twenty-first century and the early years of the war on terrorism and includes an analysis of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq up to January 2009.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Entertaining the American Army: The American Stage and Lyceum in the World War No doubt every book published should have a dedication to the public, for by them it will be read and by them judged, but in presenting this particular history in narrative form, one must realize that while it may bring much interest to the general reading public, it belongs by its very title to those women and men who wisely saw the writing on the wall and indifferently turned their backs upon their everyday life with its creature comforts, never counting the cost nor exaggerating the danger, but gladly joining the great crusade. History repeats itself! But in this present book there is no repetition - for, search as we may through the annals of past wars, we can find no precedent for a work of this nature. In very fact, when the opportunity came and the idea grew into a resolve, those who believed in the gospel of recreation realized that by the creation of just this particular type of amusement, an anachronism was being inaugurated. But by the very nature of its novelty it found a hearty response in the-minds of the men in the camps in this country and overseas, and by its inherent opportunity for service it commended itself to the women and men who had no other chance of showing how solidly they stood behind the representatives of their country. From its very moment of inception it carried with it the support of two men, without whose whole-hearted assistance it must have failed - Mr. William Sloane, Chairman of the War Work Council of the Young Men's Christian Association, and Dr. John R. Mott, its General Secretary. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. First, it T records historically the activities of a typical Infantry Regiment in the Great War, basing its account of military operations on official reports, as well as upon eyewitness recitals. Second, it depicts the average American soldier's life in barracks, billets, and on the field, as seen through the eyes of the soldiers themselves. Third, it preserves in print something of the inner feelings and spirit of the men who were privileged to play a part in the Greatest Crusade in History. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Army Life: A Private's Reminiscences of the Civil War Many volumes have been published in regard to the late Civil War in America. By these the nation is made familiar with the movements of our armies, and the results of those great military campaigns. These volumes have been written by civilians and officers of high rank, and consequently the story of the private soldier's life has never been told. That life was made up of events and surrounded by circum stances of the most interesting character. Not interesting to the soldier alone, but of interest to his friends, and all who enjoy the fruits of victory purchased by his sacrifices and patriotism. It was to supply, to a limited extent, this want so universally felt that the writer consented to furnish The Sketches of Army Life for the Republican Journal, of Belfast, Maine. The officers had spoken, but this was a voice from the ranks. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
