Book Synopsis EU Climate Policy by : Elin Lerum Boasson
Download or read book EU Climate Policy written by Elin Lerum Boasson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-22 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climate policy is today a significant area of EU governance, providing important framework conditions for many industries. But how has EU climate policy developed? This book offers structured, comparative case studies of the development of four central climate policies: emissions trading systems, renewables, carbon capture and storage, and energy policy for buildings, examining the intriguing similarities and differences in how these have taken shape. Combining sociological New Institutionalism and political science theories in a novel and engaging way, Elin Lerum Boasson and Jørgen Wettestad explore and explain the history of EU climate policy. What emerges are fascinating stories - of skilled entrepreneurs who have managed to create and exploit political windows of opportunity, and of more long-term path-dependent developments. Drawing on more than 60 interviewees, the authors present accounts never told before, providing a valuable and timely contribution to our knowledge of environmental management and EU integration. This book is a must-read for all those seeking to understand the driving forces in EU climate policy and recognize its prospects for the future.

Book Synopsis Non-food Uses of Agricultural Raw Materials by : Caroline A. Spelman
Download or read book Non-food Uses of Agricultural Raw Materials written by Caroline A. Spelman and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1994 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interest has recently grown in the non-food uses of agricultural raw materials (ARMs), particularly in developed economies. Reasons for this include the fact that in Western Europe at least, land is now surplus to food production requirements and concern about the environmental consequences of exploiting finite fossil resources. The end products sought for non-food uses are carbohydrates, fats and fibres derived from both conventional crops such as wheat, maize, oilseed rape, sugar beet and flax, as well as less conventional crops or byproducts such as lupins, elephant grass, straw and agricultural waste. This book provides an integrated perspective on both the technology and economics of the processes involved. In many cases, ARMs have to compete with cheaper substrates such as oil. The author analyzes two case studies in detail: bioethanol and a particular biodegradable plastic. Relevant political and legislative aspects, for example in the United States, Japan and the European community, as well as in less-developed countries such as Brazil, the Caribbean and some African countries where ARMs are used for energy purposes are also studied. The book will interest a wide range of people in academic research, industry and policy making concerned with the practical potential of this area of biotechnology.

Book Synopsis Lobbying the European Union by : David Coen
Download or read book Lobbying the European Union written by David Coen and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2009-06-04 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is universally accepted that there has been a huge growth in EU lobbying over the past few decades. There is now a dense EU interest group system. This entirely new volume, inspired by Mazey & Richardson's 1993 book Lobbying in the European Community, seeks to understand the role of interest groups in the policy process from agenda-setting to implementation. Specifically, the book is interested in observing how interest groups organise to influence the EU institutions and how they select different coalitions along the policy process and in different policy domains. In looking at 20 years of change, the book captures processes of institutional and actor learning, professionalisation of lobbying, and the possible emergence of a distinct EU public policy style. More specifically, from the actors' perspective, the editors are interested in assessing how the rise of direct lobbying and the emergence of fluid issue-based coalitions has changed the logic of collective action, and what is the potential impact of 'venue-shopping' on reputation and influence. From an institutional perspective, the contributors explore resource and legitimacy demands, and the practical impact of consultation processes on the emergence of a distinct EU lobbying relationship. It will be essential reading for academics and practitioners alike.
