Book excerpt: The contents of this book are mostly aimed at the amateur radio beginner and aspiring ones. Therefore, this book provides answers to basic questions like: What is the best HF antenna for my needs and location? What type of stand-alone antenna tuner should I use and which should I avoid? How can I hide my HF antenna from the neighbors and still get acceptable performance from it? What about lightning protection? This book will supply immediately useful answers to the above questions and many more. A properly designed and installed amateur radio HF antenna system can potentially make the humblest ham radio equipment perform like stations worth thousands of dollars. We are confident that the antenna experimenter will find the information given here priceless. Furthermore, any ham radio operator, armed with the information this book contains, will become a much better informed buyer of commercially made HF antenna systems and accessories. This special compendium edition is published in response to ham radio operators who wrote to ask that all the basic information, on and related to amateur radio HF antennas, be made available in one book instead of four, arguing that it would be more convenient. The author and publisher agree. Therefore this edition contains the complete four-book series on Amateur Radio HF Antennas published by Claude Jollet, VE2DPE.

Book excerpt: This fourth e-book in the series on Amateur Radio HF Antennas covers essential, and often illunderstood HF antenna accessories. Lightning on the horizon? You are not worried … because you installed the lightning protection devices described in this e-book, and you have taken the preventive measures as prescribed. But that’s not all. Your HF antenna is now transmitting more RF power, and your receiver is getting more milliwatts from your antenna system, because you learned what types of antenna tuners to avoid. You are now using an efficient tuner, and you even know how it works. Your antenna tuner will likely have its own SWR/PWR meter. Notwithstanding, this e-book will help you decide if you still need an outboard one, and which meter will best meet your needs. Furthermore, armed with the valuable information you read here, you finally acquired the antenna analyzer to satisfy the expectations of the antenna experimenter in you. Emboldened by your recent successful acquisitions, you now have the antenna tower you were dreaming of. You heeded the recommendations this e-book provided and, thus, avoided all the pitfalls that await the unwary. Finally, an e-book series on HF antennas would not be complete without a word on HF signal propagation. It outlines the software and online services available today which enable you to take full advantage of band openings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is from the hands-on perspective of a lifelong ham radio operator turned professional “RF and antenna guy” that this book is written. The intense mathematical antenna descriptions given in most antenna handbooks is more befuddling than enlightening for many. So in this book the intuitive is emphasized and mathematics is minimized, though many formulas are given to calculate selected parameters if desired. The purpose of this book is to provide a basic understanding of antennas and radio propagation for both professionals and amateurs alike. Many of the technical explanations were developed for a 5-day antenna course in which the requirement was to take students from zero to antennas in one week. The characteristics of many antenna types are discussed and construction recipes are given for building selected antenna types. The intent is to provide enough basic understanding so that the interested readers can select an appropriate antenna for their application and then design and build one for themselves. More than anything this book is intended to give the reader a basic understanding of what radio waves are, how they behave, and insight to the creative thought processes used to build the antennas that launch and receive them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is not a book on antenna theory. It does provide clear easily understood explanations on the principles of antenna operation, transmission line considerations, impedance matching, baluns, tuners, and the pros and cons of different types and configurations of wire antennas. This book is written with the intention of enabling a new comer to amateur radio to understand the theory and practical considerations of this subject without getting lost in mathematics and complex theory. Portable, reliable HF communication is required for emergency management, expedition communications and recreational uses. This book is about selecting and constructing portable HF wire antennas that will provide maximum performance with low power, light weight and low bulk. All the information required to assemble antennas and antenna kits that can be deployed in multiple configurations is provided. Special attention is given to wire antennas deployed at low heights above ground, a situation confronted by operators on the move. Special attention is also given to NVIS (Near Vertical Incident Skywave) communications, which is also optimum with low antenna elevation. NVIS propagation enables communications in the 50-500 mile range regardless of terrain and independent of repeaters. With two or three low suspension points (8-20 ft.), one can deploy wire antennas that cover the 160-30 meter bands (those capable of NVIS propagation) with performance optimized for NVIS communication. With a single high suspension point that can be improvised from one or two tall trees, buildings or cliff faces and one of the antenna launch systems described here, one can deploy multiple antenna options that can be configured from the modular antenna kit. These include inverted V resonant or random wire dipoles, long wire antennas, sloper dipoles and inverted L antennas for efficient all-band regional use. It also covers terminated V beam and inverted half rhombic beam antennas optimized for 20-10 meters while being broad band (no tuner required), low noise gain equal to or greater than a high dipole. With two medium to high suspension points (15-80 ft. depending on the band), one can install half square wire antennas that produce high gain low angle radiation that is optimum for DX operation. Dropping one of the wire curtains converts the same antenna into a general coverage multi-band inverted L. With the versatility of the modular antenna components described here, one can quickly assemble, deploy and dis-assemble and roll up high performance wire antennas that are adaptable to nearly any operating environment and communications objective.
