Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A hobby backed by centuries of tradition, amateur gem cutting remains popular today. Once a completely unskilled beginner himself, Captain John Sinkankas never forgot his struggles in learning how to cut and polish gemstones without the benefit of an instructor. With his own experience in mind, he wrote "Gem Cutting" to make it possible for others to teach themselves how to do every type of lapidary work without having to attend classes. For over half a century, "Gem Cutting" has served as the go-to guide for beginners and experts alike. Offering a wealth of information for everyone, it starts with the fundamentals and leads logically to techniques and projects that will challenge even the most advanced cutter. Every step is described in detail and illustrated with drawings and photographs. Sinkankas covers common pitfalls and, wherever possible, offers hints on how to take money-saving shortcuts. Incorporating tips on operating equipment for greatest efficiency, he explains how to make or choose equipment for sawing, grinding, sanding, and other basic operations. Special chapters describe how to cut and polish cabochons, faceted gems, spheres and beads; how to tumble gems; and how to make carvings, engravings, inlays, and mosaics. Sinkankas also advises on selecting and buying rough gemstones. A section on the description and treatment of gemstones has been expanded in this second edition to include more species and accommodate recent information on each. With its comprehensive guidance, "Gem Cutting" is an essential addition to the library of any lapidary. Captain John Sinkankas (1915-2002) dedicated his life to the study of earth sciences after his retirement from the US Navy. Winner of the "Desert Magazine" Literature Premium Award, Sinkankas authored a number of books on gemstones and published over 100 articles on lapidary subjects. He was a certified gemologist of the American Gem Society with memberships to the Mineralogical Society of America, New York Mineralogical Club, San Diego Mineral & Gem Society, and several other regional gem and mineral groups.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains a third collection of the author's finest faceting designs. It provides more than 60 new optimized patterns in a range of shapes with detailed instructions on how to cut them in a wide range of gem materials. When designing the author pays attention to maximizing factors like brilliance, sparkle, scintillation, and contrast. Of particular note are the checker patterns included in this publication that use odd symmetry to create stunningly beautiful gems when cut. The author revisits his 'fusion' concept, works with shape tessellations, and uses facet frosting to help create this wonderful collection of designs. By considering gem faceting design an art form, new ground can be explored, accounting for some of the more bespoke designs contained within the publication. Overall, the author has been mindful to include designs that will appeal to and benefit most faceters, including: * 60 Designs for the commonly used 96 index * Easy to cut designs for beginners and others to challenge experienced faceters * Optimized angles to work in materials with refractive indices over a wide range * 12 Round designs not including frosted designs * 10 Frosted designs, including both crown and pavilion frosting * 12 Oval and 3 square designs * 6 Pear and 4 trillion designs * 5 Marquise designs including eyes and diamond shapes * 5 Hexagonal and 5 other designs of assorted shapes

Book excerpt: Is God still talking? This book makes the question a statement. God is still talking. The real question is: Are you listening? God is still talking to you. Did God have anything more to say after the completion of Scripture, or has he retreated into silence? In God Is Still Talking, Dr. James E. Hamer explores these and other questions pertaining to a daily relationship with Christ. He takes the reader on a journey to the greater dimension of living in the Spirit where there is daily access to the presence of God. It is an invisible reality, there to be explored and experienced rather than argued and analyzed, if believers want to hear God talking. Dr. Hamer sees a capacity for more in our personal relationships with Christa "sacred places where God is still speaking. How is it possible to have a personal relationship with someone who is invisible? God Is Still Talking will help you recognize the various ways that God is communicating his direction, insights, and truth to your life. What is God saying to you?"

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author of, "Faceting History: Cutting Diamonds and Colored Stones" has for a long time had a deep interest in learning how the early faceters (cutters) of diamonds and colored gemstones were able to complete their work. What methods did they use? What equipment did they have to make success possible? How soon did they discover how to complete the many phases necessary to accomplish their work? How did the equipment and methods differ between fashioning diamonds and faceting colored stones? These are just a few of the questions that the author wanted to find the answers for. In looking for answers to these and other questions, the author found that there were bits and pieces of information available in many previous books, but there was not a good book available that would answer most of his questions. Upon hearing the author's remarks about this fact, one of the librarians at the wonderful library located at the Gemological Institute of America's Carlsbad campus said that if such a book was not available, "maybe you should write the book!" Well, the author had been thinking of doing just that, but the remark caused the author to see the light and agree to get started on the project. Little did he know then that the project would require many months of eight hour days over seven day weeks to get the book completed. He decided to write a book that would answer these and other related questions that he had. The thought also occurred to him that such a book would be a valuable volume to be placed in libraries of individual faceters around the world. He realized that such a book would also be of great value to anyone who works behind a Jewelry store counter. A successful sales person isone who is knowledgeable about the products that they are selling. A book of faceting information would be extremely valuable if read and re-read from time to time. A customer in the Jewelry store will no doubt be favorably impressed by a sales presentation that is made with the use of interesting and informative information about diamonds and the various colored gemstones. The customer will be convinced that the sales person knows about what they are talking. The author has spent nearly three years on the project of researching the GIA library and other libraries, along with the extensive personal library of gemstone related books that he personally possesses. Many conflicting reports were noted in his study. He has made the statements in his book reflect the most commonly accepted opinions, of the most respected authors' works that he has found in his research. History is only obtainable from the earlier works of other authors. We cannot go back to the long past centuries ourselves, to see first hand what really happened and when it happened. A study of faceting history requires making the best choices of the information that is available. This completed book answers questions as to why the fashioning of diamonds was/is so different from the faceting of colored gemstones. The book compares the needed equipment and the methods that have brought the greatest successes. In addition, a great deal of other information connected to faceting is included. There are seven chapters in the book and there are over 125 photographs of the early equipment and methods that were used. The photographs show the faceters, the workroom conditions, and the tools and equipment that they used to completebeautiful and lasting gemstones. The book chapters are titled: An Introduction to Faceting, Early Man's Stone Appreciation, Diamond Fashioning Procedure and Equipment, Colored Stone Faceting Procedure and Equipment, The Evolution of Cut Designs, Famous and Historic Gemstones, Sources of Diamond and Colored Stone Rough, and lastly, Advances in Faceting Over the Past One Hundred Years. Within each of these chapters the reader will find a multitude of additional and interesting information. Chapter One: Early Faceting Inform

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited collection is an interdisciplinary study of gems in the early modern world. It examines the relations between the art, science, and technology of gems, and it does so against the backdrop of an expanding global trade in gems. The eleven chapters are organised into three parts. The first part sets the scene by describing how gems moved around the early modern world, how they were set in motion, and how they were pulled together in the course of their travels. The second part is about value. It asks why people valued gems, how they determined the value of a given gem, and how the value of a gem was connected to its perceived place of origin. The third part deals with the skills involved in cutting, polishing, and mounting gems, and how these skills were transmitted and articulated by artisans. The common themes of all these chapters are materials, knowledge and global trade. The contributors to this volume focus on the material properties of gems such as their weight and hardness, on the knowledge involved in exchanging them and valuing them, and on the cultural consequences of the expanding trade in gems in Eurasia and the Americas.
