Book Synopsis Music, Brain, and Rehabilitation: Emerging Therapeutic Applications and Potential Neural Mechanisms by : Teppo Särkämö
Download or read book Music, Brain, and Rehabilitation: Emerging Therapeutic Applications and Potential Neural Mechanisms written by Teppo Särkämö and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2016-08-05 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Music is an important source of enjoyment, learning, and well-being in life as well as a rich, powerful, and versatile stimulus for the brain. With the advance of modern neuroimaging techniques during the past decades, we are now beginning to understand better what goes on in the healthy brain when we hear, play, think, and feel music and how the structure and function of the brain can change as a result of musical training and expertise. For more than a century, music has also been studied in the field of neurology where the focus has mostly been on musical deficits and symptoms caused by neurological illness (e.g., amusia, musicogenic epilepsy) or on occupational diseases of professional musicians (e.g., focal dystonia, hearing loss). Recently, however, there has been increasing interest and progress also in adopting music as a therapeutic tool in neurological rehabilitation, and many novel music-based rehabilitation methods have been developed to facilitate motor, cognitive, emotional, and social functioning of infants, children and adults suffering from a debilitating neurological illness or disorder. Traditionally, the fields of music neuroscience and music therapy have progressed rather independently, but they are now beginning to integrate and merge in clinical neurology, providing novel and important information about how music is processed in the damaged or abnormal brain, how structural and functional recovery of the brain can be enhanced by music-based rehabilitation methods, and what neural mechanisms underlie the therapeutic effects of music. Ideally, this information can be used to better understand how and why music works in rehabilitation and to develop more effective music-based applications that can be targeted and tailored towards individual rehabilitation needs. The aim of this Research Topic is to bring together research across multiple disciplines with a special focus on music, brain, and neurological rehabilitation. We encourage researchers working in the field to submit a paper presenting either original empirical research, novel theoretical or conceptual perspectives, a review, or methodological advances related to following two core topics: 1) how are musical skills and attributes (e.g., perceiving music, experiencing music emotionally, playing or singing) affected by a developmental or acquired neurological illness or disorder (for example, stroke, aphasia, brain injury, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, autism, ADHD, dyslexia, focal dystonia, or tinnitus) and 2) what is the applicability, effectiveness, and mechanisms of music-based rehabilitation methods for persons with a neurological illness or disorder? Research methodology can include behavioural, physiological and/or neuroimaging techniques, and studies can be either clinical group studies or case studies (studies of healthy subjects are applicable only if their findings have clear clinical implications).

As months go by, Grandpa forgets more, and he can't do as much as he could before. But he can still make music - his fingers remember the notes on the piano. And when he can't recall the words to a favorite old song, Callie helps him come up with new things that they can sing about together. Alison Acheson's thoughtful storytelling and Bill Farnsworth's touching paintings portray a family that learns to adapt to the challenges of Alzheimer's disease while making the very best of their time together.

Book Synopsis Autism Spectrum Disorder and Alzheimer's Disease by : Ghulam Md Ashraf
Download or read book Autism Spectrum Disorder and Alzheimer's Disease written by Ghulam Md Ashraf and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-02-08 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book talks about the multidimensional biological etiology of Alzheimer’s disease and autism spectrum disorder which leads to distinctive ways of perception, thinking and learning in affected individuals. It provides a deeper emphasis on the need for early diagnosis, continuous assessment of patients and the proper educational methods and environment required towards enabling people affected with these disorders capable of evolving and learning. This book explores alternative solutions for autism spectrum disorder based on the theory of brain plasticity, the relationship between the gut microbiota and the central nervous system along with genetic factors and toxic metal exposures which are responsible for the oxidative damage resulting in a decreased ability of the patients to use objects or response to auditory stimuli. It also identifies and provides the latest research towards dealing with memory loss, which is the first sign of cognitive impairment followed by behavioral disturbances. These symptoms are associated with a rigorous neuronal decline and the appearance of two brain lesions, senile plaques and neurofibrillary tangles, which are mainly composed of Aβ and hyper phosphorylated tau protein respectively. This book also provides the latest research towards reducing autism disorder severity such as targeting the disease with symptomatic treatments such as cholinesterase inhibitors, NMDA receptor antagonist, β-secretase and γ-secretase inhibitors, α-secretase stimulators, tau inhibitors, immunotherapy, nutraceuticals, and nano drugs. This book will not only be a good resource for professors and lecturers teaching in the area of neuroscience, medicine, biochemistry, neuroinformatics, and nanotechnology, etc. but also for professionals working in the field of occupational therapy and geriatric clinics and rehabilitation.
Book Synopsis Prevent Alzheimer's, Autism and Stroke by : Dennis N. Crouse, Ph.d.
Download or read book Prevent Alzheimer's, Autism and Stroke written by Dennis N. Crouse, Ph.d. and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-09-01 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This ground-breaking book describes a surprising connection between Alzheimer's, autism, and stroke and identifies their common causal factor as neurotoxic forms of aluminum. The exciting recent research that makes this identification possible is both carefully explained and thoroughly referenced. These diseases are modern mismatch diseases created by our brains attempting to function in the presence of a chemical monster at levels not experienced during the brain's evolution. This book describes specific preventative measures to be taken by you and your family to rid yourself of this chemical monster. Most importantly a preventative system for individuals is described in this book involving 7 specific supplements, 7 lifestyle choices, and a dissolved mineral that will prevent Alzheimer's, autism, and stroke. This is also a combination therapy that has been shown to reverse the cognitive decline seen in early-stage Alzheimer's disease. Elements of this combination therapy have also been found to reverse the course of autism in the very young and the course of hardening of the arteries and stroke in the very old. The author's interest in dementia started after an acquaintance died of the after-effects of a stroke and the author's mother and a friend's mother, both 86 years old at the time, began suffering severe frustration and panic attacks due to short term memory failure. With a doctorate in chemistry from Harvard, the author spent a number of years reading hundreds of research articles in scientific journals. The search for the causes of Alzheimer's and stroke started as a mystery and led to a surprising connection with autism. Once the mystery was solved it transformed into a crusade. The author found this monster lurking in his medicine cabinet, food pantries, refrigerator, and the water pipes leading into his home. This monster had been damaging the brains of newborn infants, elderly family members, and everyone in between for years. Alzheimer's (AD) is a currently a terminal disease but it is not an inevitable part of aging. The United States has a death rate due to Alzheimer's that is one of the highest in the world (24.8 per 100,000) while Singapore has one of the lowest death rates due to Alzheimer's (0 per 100,000). This is in spite of the fact that people in Singapore live on average 4 years longer than people in the United States. Therefore AD is not a typical part of ageing as there are countries in the world, such as Singapore, where people with a life expectancy greater than the U.S. have much less AD. Surprisingly these same countries also have much lower incidence of autism. This book explains why AD and autism are not prevalent in some parts of the world and how countries, like the U.S., can take steps to lower their rates of both AD and autism. This book makes it clear that as both individuals and as a culture it is time to take on neurotoxic aluminum that causes AD, autism, and stroke. Reading this book will allow you to make an informed decision about what recommendations you will use to prevent neurotoxic aluminum from claiming your brain and the brains of those you love. By using recent research to identify neurotoxic forms of aluminum as a cause of Alzheimer's disease and providing steps to avoid aluminum ingestion, this book provides a different perspective from other books on Alzheimer's prevention by notable authors such as Jean Carper, Bruce File and Russel Blaylock, Gary Small and Gigi Vorgan, and Thomas Harding.
