Book Synopsis A Spirit of True Learning by : Matthew Jordan
Download or read book A Spirit of True Learning written by Matthew Jordan and published by UNSW Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Written to commemorate the University of New England's fiftieth year as an independent institution, A Spirit of True Learning tells the story of the University's early struggles, its commitment to country students and the surrounding community, its rapid growth after autonomy, its development of a strong tradition of teaching and research, and its experiences over the last decade within the context of government reform and rationalisation." "This is also the story of a unique university. Like the Australian National University, UNE was founded during the great age of Australian nation-building and Keynesian optimism. Opened as an affiliate college of the University of Sydney in 1938, New England became autonomous in 1954. Its founders saw it as a deliberate attempt to bring the special advantages and the special problems of rural life in Australia under the spotlight of higher learning."--BOOK JACKET.
Download or read book Bob Zuppke written by Maynard Brichford and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2009-09-12 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bob Zuppke was head football coach at the University of Illinois from 1912 to 1941, a period that saw two world wars, a major economic depression, and significant changes in higher education and the role of sports, as major intercollegiate competitions became primary public relations events for the most competitive universities. Often credited with several significant football innovations including the huddle, Zuppke won two national championships and won or tied for seven Big Ten conference titles. This biography of Zuppke is a study of his passion for football, his advocacy for its educational value and his ability to promote and market the game to the academic community and the general public. It places him in the context of multiple themes, including the development of interscholastic, intercollegiate and professional football; presidential support and public relations; sports psychology; stadium building and commercial sports; academic criticism; the fraternity system; boosters; and sports in a state-supported public university.

Book Synopsis Susquehanna University, 1858-2000 by : Donald D. Housley
Download or read book Susquehanna University, 1858-2000 written by Donald D. Housley and published by Susquehanna University Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 618 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Susquehanna University's history from 1858 to 2000 has occurred in three stages, each expressing a different mission. The school was founded in 1858 as the Missionary Institute of the Evangelical Lutheran Church to fulfill the vision of the Rev. Benjamin Kurtz, a Lutheran cleric and editor of the Lutheran Observer. He was a partisan of the American Lutheran viewpoint caught up in a fratricidal battle with Lutheran orthodoxy. The Missionary Institute sustained his viewpoint in the preparation, gratis, of men called to preach the gospel in foreign and home missions. A complementary purpose was to educate young people in Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania at both the Institute and its sister school, the Susquehanna Female College. When the Female College folded in 1873, the Institute became coeducational.

Book Synopsis Nursing the Nation by : Jean C. Whelan
Download or read book Nursing the Nation written by Jean C. Whelan and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2021-02-12 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern health care cannot exist without professional nurses. Throughout the twentieth century, there was seldom a sustained period when the supply of nurses was equal to demand. Nursing the Nation offers a historical analysis of the relationship between the development of nurse employment arrangements with patients and institutions and the appearance of nurse shortages from 1890 to 1950. The response to nursing supply and demand problems by health care institutions and policy-making organizations failed to address nurse workforce issues adequately, and this failure resulted in, at times, profound and lengthy nurse shortages. Nurses also lost the ability to control their own destiny within health care institutions while nevertheless establishing themselves as the most critical part of health care provision today.

Download or read book Cambodge written by Penny Edwards and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study of Cambodian nationalism brings to life eight turbulent decades of cultural change and sheds new light on the colonial ancestry of Pol Pot's murderous dystopia. Penny Edwards re-creates the intellectual milieux and cultural traffic linking Europe and empire, interweaving analysis of key movements and ideas in the French Protectorate of Cambodge with contemporary developments in the Metropole. With its fresh take on the dynamics of colonialism and nationalism, Cambodge: The Cultivation of a Nation, 1860-1945 will become essential reading for scholars of history, politics, and society in Southeast Asia. Edwards' analysis of Buddhism and her consideration of Angkor's emergence as a national monument will be of particular interest to students of Asian and European religion, museology, heritage studies, and art history. It will also appeal to specialists in modern French history, cultural studies, and colonialism, as well as readers with a general interest in Cambodia.

Book Synopsis Revitalizing History by : Paul E. Bolin
Download or read book Revitalizing History written by Paul E. Bolin and published by Vernon Press. This book was released on with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historical inquiry forms the foundation for much research undertaken in art education. While traversing paths of historical investigation in this field we may discover undocumented moments and overlooked or hidden individuals, as well as encounter challenging ideas in need of exploration and critique. In doing so, history is approached from multiple and, at times, vitally diverse perspectives. Our hope is that the conversations generated through this text will continue to strengthen and encourage more interest in histories of art education, but also more sophisticated and innovative approaches to historical research in this field. The overarching objective of the text is to recognize the historical role that many overlooked individuals—particularly African Americans and women—have played in the field of art education, and acknowledge the importance of history and historical research in this digital age. This text opens up possibilities of faculty collaborations across programs interested in history and historical research on a local, national, and international level. By assembling the work of various scholars from across the United States, this text is intended to elicit rich conversations about history that would be otherwise beyond what is provided in general art education textbooks.
