Book Synopsis Bridges of the Oregon Coast by : Ray Bottenberg
Download or read book Bridges of the Oregon Coast written by Ray Bottenberg and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2006 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1920s and 1930s, Oregon's legendary bridge engineer Conde B. McCullough designed a first-rate collection of aesthetic bridges on the Oregon Coast Highway to enhance an already dramatic and beautiful landscape. The six largest of these, at Gold Beach, Newport, Waldport, Florence, Reedsport, and Coos Bay, eliminated the last ferries on the Oregon Coast Highway between the Columbia River and California. McCullough planned to build one bridge each year after completion of the Rogue River Bridge at Gold Beach in 1932, but the tightening grip of the Depression threatened his plans. In 1933, McCullough and his staff worked day and night to finish plans for the remaining five bridges, and in early 1934, the Public Works Administration funded simultaneous construction of them. The combined projects provided approximately 630 jobs, but at least six workers perished during construction. After the bridges were complete, Oregon coast tourism increased by a dramatic 72 percent in the first year.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fantastic guide to the best outdoor fun in the Pacific Northwest, covering Oregon, Washington, Victoria and Vancouver in British Columbia and far northern California. This ever-popular region offers unlimited opportunities for the active traveler, and this book shows you where, when and how to find them. Kayaking, hiking, cycling, trekking, horseback riding, boating and more to fill your days with adventure. Sightseeing, museums, galleries, theaters and picnicking will take care of your "down time." Maps, photos. "Most people are aware that the Space Needle is in Seattle and that the Columbia River Gorge is a must-see on any trip to the Northwest. But where should you turn for information about watching the killer whales (orcas) among Washington's gorgeous San Juan Islands? Fishing along the rugged Oregon coast? Hiking in country said to be frequented by Bigfoot himself? Parasailing over Puget Sound? Engaging some llamas to carry your gear on a camping trip to the high country? And much, much more. "Adventure Guide to the Pacific Northwest" will take you where you want to go." -- Reader. "Adventure Guide to the Pacific Northwest by Don & Marjorie Young is a Hunter Travel Guide which I can also highly recommend. We love traveling in the Pacific Northwest but there is so very much to see I couldn't imagine how they could get it all into one book, but they have done a very good job of it! The organization of the book makes it easy to find just what you want in each area from restaurants and places to stay in all price ranges, tours, camping, information sources, maps, etc. I especially like the sections called Adventures which have separate categories for on foot, horseback, wheels, water, and snow. This is a guide worth having and nominally priced." -- Bonnie Neely

Download or read book Oregon 1859 written by Janice Marschner and published by Timber Press. This book was released on 2008-07-15 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essential Oregon guide for time travelers of all ages. Oregon became the 33rd state in the Union on February 14, 1859. Portland had wooden sidewalks and tamped dirt streets unlit by gaslight until a year later. To the south, gold glittered in streams; towns with names like Echo, Lookingglass, and Quartzville were springing up all over. It is a time to remember— and revisit—today, 150 years later, with this detailed and lively guide. Janice Marschner provides all you need to travel through each of Oregon's 19 original counties at the moment of statehood: a map showing each county's 1859 place names and current reference points; the history of native peoples and settlers; early roads and bridges; the first homes, schools, stores, hotels, and churches; biographical sketches of notable individuals throughout the state. Historical photographs show the determined faces of natives and settlers; their oxen and wagons on wide, rough roads; their rafts and ferries on the rivers; and their towns under development. An inspiring, close-up portrait at the moment of statehood, Oregon 1859 will light the way back for anyone who wants to see Oregon today as it was then.
