Book Synopsis The Imaginative Institution: Planning and Governance in Madrid by : Michael Neuman
Download or read book The Imaginative Institution: Planning and Governance in Madrid written by Michael Neuman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-03 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every 20 years since 1920, Madrid has undergone an urban planning cycle in which a city plan was prepared, adopted by law, and implemented by a new institution. This preparation-adoption-institutionalization sequence, along with the institution's structures and procedures, have persisted - with some exceptions - despite frequent upheavals in society. The planning institution itself played a lead role in maintaining continuity, traumatic history notwithstanding. Why and how was this the case? Madrid's planners, who had mostly trained as architects, invented new images for the city and metro region: images of urban space that were social constructs, the products of planning processes. These images were tools that coordinated planning and urban policy. In a complex, fragmented institutional milieu in which scores of organized interests competed in overlapping policy arenas, images were a cohesive force around which plans, policies, and investments were shaped. Planners in Madrid also used their images to build new institutions. Images began as city or metropolitan designs or as a metaphor capturing a new vision. New political regimes injected their principles and beliefs into the governing institution via images and metaphors. These images went a long way in constituting the new institution, and in helping realize each regime's goals. This empirically-based life cycle theory of institutional evolution suggests that the constitutional image sustaining the institution undergoes a change or is replaced by a new image, leading to a new or reformed institution. A life cycle typology of institutional transformation is formulated with four variables: type of change, stimulus for change, type of constitutional image, and outcome of the transformation. By linking the life cycle hypothesis with cognitive theories of image formation, and then situating their synthesis within a frame of cognition as a means of structuring the institution, this book arrives at a new theory

Book Synopsis Vistas de España by : Mary Elizabeth Boone
Download or read book Vistas de España written by Mary Elizabeth Boone and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the decades following the American Civil War and leading up to the First World War, a definitive shift in power took place between Spain and the United States. This original book explores American artists’ perceptions of Spain during this period of turmoil and demonstrates how their responses to Spanish art helped to answer emerging, complex questions about American national identity. M. Elizabeth Boone focuses on works by Thomas Eakins, Mary Cassatt, William Merritt Chase, John Singer Sargent, Robert Henri, and other American artists who traveled to Spain to study the achievements of such great masters as Murillo, Velázquez, and Goya. The resulting American paintings, some well known and others now largely forgotten, provide intriguing insights not only into the 19th-century American struggle to define itself as an imperial power but also into the relations between the United States and the Spanish-speaking world today.

Book Synopsis The Mayflies of Europe (Ephemeroptera) by : Ernst Bauernfeind
Download or read book The Mayflies of Europe (Ephemeroptera) written by Ernst Bauernfeind and published by Apollo Books. This book was released on 2012 with total page 796 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the various groups of aquatic insects, mayflies (Ephemeroptera) are of special interest for professional limnologists, entomological researchers, naturalists, and even the dedicated fly angler. Traditionally, identification has been considered difficult. Implementation in environmental monitoring and freshwater management has led to an ever increasing demand for exact information on taxonomy and ecology. This book provides an up-to-date reference for Ephemeroptera identification, including last instar larvae (nymphs), subimago (dun), and male and female imagines. Recent changes in nomenclature are discussed in detail. Keys are provided for genera and introductory chapters characterize every family and genus. Species accounts follow a common format, providing a synonymy, characters for identification (including literature references), remarks (on type material, variation, confusing or extralimital species), and information on biology and distribution patterns. Male genitalia are illustrated by micrographs and line drawings. REM photographs of the egg chorionic structure are provided for genera and selected species. Habitus of larvae and imagines are, for most genera, illustrated by color photographs. The geographical area covered is Europe, including the European part of Russia, the Mediterranean islands, as well as North Africa. Additional information is provided for adjacent parts of the western Palaearctic Region. A comprehensive index, check list, and distribution catalogue (following the widely adopted concept of Illies' Limnofauna Europaean) allow for quick information on all species recorded so far in Europe.
