Book Synopsis Life Among the Qallunaat by : Mini Aodla Freeman
Download or read book Life Among the Qallunaat written by Mini Aodla Freeman and published by Univ. of Manitoba Press. This book was released on 2015-04-10 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life Among the Qallunaat is the story of Mini Aodla Freeman’s experiences growing up in the Inuit communities of James Bay and her journey in the 1950s from her home to the strange land and stranger customs of the Qallunaat, those living south of the Arctic. Her extraordinary story, sometimes humourous and sometimes heartbreaking, illustrates an Inuit woman’s movement between worlds and ways of understanding. It also provides a clear-eyed record of the changes that swept through Inuit communities in the 1940s and 1950s. Mini Aodla Freeman was born in 1936 on Cape Hope Island in James Bay. At the age of sixteen, she began nurse's training at Ste. Therese School in Fort George, Quebec, and in 1957 she moved to Ottawa to work as a translator for the then Department of Northern Affairs and Natural Resources. Her memoir, Life Among the Qallunaat, was published in 1978 and has been translated into French, German, and Greenlandic. Life Among the Qallunaat is the third book in the First Voices, First Texts series, which publishes lost or under appreciated texts by Indigenous writers. This reissue of Mini Aodla Freeman’s path-breaking work includes new material, an interview with the author, and an afterword by Keavy Martin and Julie Rak, with Norma Dunning.

Book excerpt: The ethical claims discussed mobilize new relations between ourselves and others as well as new cultural practices, including new forms and genres In a historical moment when the more-than-century-old shock of the modern has given way to global and trans-national shifts and cultural displacements, what new ethical demands are created? Writing across the disciplines of anthropology, literature, museology, film, and sociology, contributors to this groundbreaking volume confront a world fraught with new crises and instabilities. The ethical claims they discuss mobilize new relations between ourselves and others as well as new cultural practices, including new forms and genres. Postmodernism and the Ethical Subject points us to new ways of thinking that raise the ethical stakes of our historical moment.

Book Synopsis Hunter with Harpoon by : Markoosie Patsauq
Download or read book Hunter with Harpoon written by Markoosie Patsauq and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2020-11-18 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published fifty years ago under the title Harpoon of the Hunter, Markoosie Patsauq's novel helped establish the genre of Indigenous fiction in Canada. This new English translation unfolds the story of Kamik, a young hero who comes to manhood while on a perilous hunt for a wounded polar bear. In this astonishing tale of a people struggling for survival in a brutal environment, Patsauq describes a life in the Canadian Arctic as one that is reliant on cooperation and vigilance. In collaboration with the author, Valerie Henitiuk and Marc-Antoine Mahieu return to the original Inuktitut text to provide English readers with a more accurate translation. With a preface by Patsauq and an afterword from the translators, this edition offers a fresh and contextualized interpretation of a cultural milestone. Whether revisiting this classic or discovering it for the first time, readers will find in Hunter with Harpoon a sophisticated coming-of-age tale illustrating a way of life not as it appeared to southerners, but as it has survived in the memory of the Inuit themselves.
Book Synopsis People from Our Side by : Peter Pitseolak
Download or read book People from Our Side written by Peter Pitseolak and published by Hurtig. This book was released on 1975 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The text of People from Our Side consists of Peter Pitseolak's manuscript -- originally written in syllabics -- and a narrative drawn from interviews conducted by Dorothy Eber with the help of young Inuit interpreters. Peter Pitseolak learned the system of reading and writing brought by the missionaries and from an early age formed the habit of keeping a diary. He took his first photograph for a white man who was afraid to approach a polar bear and later, in the early 1940s, acquired his own camera and taught himself, with the help of his wife Aggeok, to develop films in igloo, tent, and hut. His pictures catch, as no white photographer's could, the authentic quality and detail of Eskimo life in the last days of the camp system. Sweeping from nomadic times to the early 1970s, Peter Pitseolak provides a frank and vigorous account of how change came to Baffin Island. A realist who knew he was providing a social history of a vanishing way of life, his story is a farewell to traditional camp life and to Seekooseelak -- where the people of Cape Dorset once had their camps. -- from google books.
Book Synopsis Stories in a New Skin by : Keavy Martin
Download or read book Stories in a New Skin written by Keavy Martin and published by Univ. of Manitoba Press. This book was released on 2012-12-15 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an age where southern power-holders look north and see only vacant polar landscapes, isolated communities, and exploitable resources, it is important to note that the Inuit homeland encompasses extensive philosophical, political, and literary traditions. Stories in a New Skin is a seminal text that explores these Arctic literary traditions and, in the process, reveals a pathway into Inuit literary criticism. Author Keavy Martin considers writing, storytelling, and performance from a range of genres and historical periods—the classic stories and songs of Inuit oral traditions, life writing, oral histories, and contemporary fiction, poetry and film—and discusses the ways in which these texts constitute an autonomous literary tradition. She draws attention to the interconnection between language, form and context and illustrates the capacity of Inuit writers, singers and storytellers to instruct diverse audiences in the appreciation of Inuit texts. Although Eurowestern academic contexts and literary terminology are a relatively foreign presence in Inuit territory, Martin builds on the inherent adaptability and resilience of Inuit genres in order to foster greater southern awareness of a tradition whose audience has remained primarily northern.
