Book excerpt: "(Lilley's) verse brings beauty to the almost-failed world it creates."--Rain Taxi "Lilley's power comes partly from his sound: syncopated, densely compacted, defiantly resigned."--The Believer Alpha--the beginning; the first letter of the military alphabet; the highest rank in a dominance hierarchy; being the most prominent, talented, or aggressive person in a group. Zulu--tribe; a member of the Negroid people of eastern South Africa; a Social Aid and Pleasure Club in New Orleans; an adjective to describe the language, customs, etc., of the Zulu people. Alpha Zulu is a venture into African American storytelling; it is a blurring of secular and sacred, the tavern and the church, the fall and the ascension of the individual, the beautiful and the terrible, and the humanity found in the twist of the street and the turn of the road. The people in the poems--the narrators and the subjects--tell the stories. The details and images locate each poem at the crossroad of ordinary people with extraordinary, edgy, and universal situations, and their responses are spiritual and streetwise. The lyricism of the line supplies a subtle blues and jazz as the underscore for a very particular community. Narrators and personas give perspectives of place and time, placing the poems fi rmly in the continuum of African culture in America. Gary Copeland Lilley is a native of Sandy Cross, North Carolina, and the beauty of the southern edge of The Great Dismal Swamp is what he calls his ancestral home. He is veteran of the US Navy Submarine Force and a longtime blues denizen of Washington, DC, and Chicago, Illinois. He is also an outsider artist and currently lives in Swannanoa, North Carolina.

Moose takes you through all the basics for camera gear and settings, showing you what he travels with and the settings he uses to get those tack sharp images. He covers one of the most important aspects of aviation photography–light! And, he gives you a number of examples of how to take the best advantage of that light any time of the day. He shares the critical techniques you’ll need to master to create the illusion of flight, speed, and romance in a still image, including which types of prop blur you’re aiming for (and which types you want to avoid). You’ll learn how to make the most out of air shows and fly-ins–what to shoot while you’re there, and what you might want to skip or avoid altogether (and why). You’ll learn how to photograph aircraft on the ground, from ground-to-air, and ultimately air-to-air, and how to capture one of the most important elements in aviation photography today: the fascinating pilots and crew–the people! Moose shares many wonderful stories and adventures along the way, which illustrate how, as photographers, we’re also storytellers, and the importance of bringing out those stories in our aviation photos. Plus, you’ll gain free access to his acclaimed KelbyOne film, Warbirds and the Men Who Flew Them. With this book, your camera, and your passion, your success in aviation photography will quickly take flight!

Over a two-year period, Jamie learns the cockpit drills, interprets the maps, navigates, and perfects his piloting skills. First Officer will have you in the cockpit with them. The story of First Officer reminds readers that a private pilot’s license, like a motor vehicle license, is granted with conditions. It’s not a right, but a privilege. There are rules, most of them in place for the safety of those in the air and on the ground. Failure to heed them may prove disastrous. Piloting your own plane, can be sensational for the way the aircraft’s speed can upturn our sense of space, distance, and lifestyles. It can be like a magic carpet ride, but there are dangers, with little room for error. Becoming a good pilot requires knowledge and teaching, which are adequate when things go according to plan. But when an unexpected and disastrous event occurs, we learn that survival requires more than piloting skills alone. We discover the value of courage and determination. First Officer is an Australian story, based at Tyabb on Melbourne’s beautiful Mornington Peninsula.

Book excerpt: On the morning of May 9, 1980, harbor pilot John Lerro was guiding a 600-foot freighter, the Summit Venture, into Tampa Bay. Directly in the ship’s path was the Sunshine Skyway Bridge--two ribbons of concrete, steel, and asphalt that crossed fifteen miles of open bay. Suddenly, a violent weather cell reduced visibility to zero at the precise moment when Lerro attempted to direct the 20,000-ton vessel underneath the bridge. Unable to stop or see where he was going, Lerro drove the ship into a support pier; the main span splintered and collapsed 150 feet into the bay. Seven cars and a Greyhound bus fell over the broken edge and into the churning water below. Thirty-five people died. Skyway tells the entire story of this horrific event, from the circumstances that led up to it through the years-long legal proceedings that followed. Through personal interviews and extensive research, Bill DeYoung pieces together the harrowing moments of the collision, including the first-person stories of the survivors, and remembers those whose lives were cut short by the events of that fateful day. Similarly, DeYoung details the downward spiral of Lerro’s life, his vilification in the days and weeks that followed the accident, and his obsession with the tragedy well into his painful last years. DeYoung also offers a history of the ill-fated bridge, from its construction in 1954, through the addition of a second parallel span in 1971, to its eventual replacement. He discusses the sinking of a Coast Guard cutter a mere three months before Skyway collapsed and the Department of Transportation’s dire warnings about the bridge’s condition. The result is a vividly detailed portrait of the rise and fall of a Tampa Bay landmark.

It is factual in the sense that a specific individual well known to me disappeared after Vietnam and has never been seen since returning to the states from that emotionally devastating conflict. The specifics of that young mans trials are completely unknown to me. The fiction begins with speculation as to the kinds of events that would so totally alienate a veteran from his family and friends to the point that he would refuse all contact with them. Then, he seems to have completely disappeared from the face of the earth. In fiction Carl Steiger faces the increasing psychological turmoil of war and lost love, and becomes addicted to heroin-- a drug which has also been called HORSE-- hence the title. As the story line progresses the impending disaster is softened by the fact that the reader has already seen the Prologue and knows that Steiger will survive both conflicts: He will physically survive the slaughter in Vietnam, and-- after years of addiction-- he will also finally overcome the terrible and seemingly insurmountable malady of heroin dependency. Steiger survives and the hope of the storyteller is simply that the young man mentioned above will also survive. Further it is our hope that all of the forgotten Horse Soldiers--many of whom still wander through the shadows of society today--will also survive. We pray that they will Chuck Breuer, Edgefield SC, August 3, 2000.

Book excerpt: From a national bestselling author: “A classic cat-and-mouse with enough twists to enthrall even the most veteran thriller reader” (David Baldacci). How well do you really know the person you love? How far would you go to find out? If there were one person in the world Dr. Lauren Chambers was sure she could rely on, it was her husband, Michael. Slowly recovering from an agoraphobic depression and still prone to episodes of blinding anxiety, the gifted psychologist has depended on his love and support. So when Michael suddenly and mysteriously vanishes, Lauren once again finds herself balancing on a knife’s edge of paranoia. Is there more to it than paranoia, though? Private investigator Nick Bradley believes so. As the pair takes off on a cross-country journey in search of answers—a search that yields a series of unsettling truths about the husband Lauren believed she knew so well—bestselling author Alan Jacobson sets in motion a page-turning tale of concealed identities, an assassin’s vendetta, and murderous revenge. A master of the shocking twist and the ingenious turn, Jacobson builds an exhilarating road thriller filled with hairpin turns and unexpected detours as Lauren heads for a face-off with the most dangerous secret of all: the truth. From the author of False Accusations and The Lost Codex, this is “a book that is impossible to put down” (Library Journal).

Book excerpt: In the aftermath of 9/11, President Bush froze all terrorist assets in traditional financial institutions and money channels. But Al Qaeda and other terrorist groups have long followed a diversification strategy that has rendered the crackdown by the U.S. and other governments almost useless. Blood from Stones is the first book to uncover, through on-the-ground reporting, the interlocking web of commodities, underground transfer systems, charities, and sympathetic bankers that support terrorist activities throughout the world. As a foreign correspondent and investigative reporter for The Washington Post, Douglas Farah ventured into the dangerous and uncharted world of terrorist financing—a journey that took him across four continents. The information he gathered was far ahead of what U.S. intelligence agencies knew as they scrambled to understand the 9/11 attacks. In unprecedented detail, Farah traces the movement of money from the traffickers of “blood diamonds” in West Africa to the world diamond exchange in Belgium and homegrown money merchants in Saudi Arabia, Dubai, Karachi, and Lahore who turn cash into commodities and commodities into cash. He probes charities that siphon off money to pay for such essentials as false identification cards and safe passage for operatives. And he reveals how the funding of terrorist activities is integrated into the age-old hawala network, a trust-based system that has operated for generations across Arabia and Southeast Asia. Focusing on this critical aspect of the war on terrorism, Blood from Stones not only shows how terrorists are able to orchestrate complex and expensive attacks but also makes it clear why the war will be so difficult to win.

Book excerpt: Of Silent Parades is a story about dignity which blends a combination of dialogue, narrative, and description, revealing the horizontal aftermath of the Vietnam Era. Its characters cope with the rebuiliding of America's military image during the 70's, and offer a means of reconciliation to bridge the immeasurably great intervals (which still exists to some degree) between the American public, politicians, the news media, and the Vietnam veteran.
