Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Along Mediterranean Shores How would you like to go on a pilgrimage with me? In old times pilgrims toiled over thousands of weary miles on foot and suffered many perils on land or sea in their long journey to the Holy Land; but you and I need only to board a luxurious ocean steamer. Our pilgrimage will be to the Holy Land too, and on the way we shall see many other strange and interesting countries, for I wish to take you with me on a trip lasting many weeks, along the warm shores of that greatest of inland seas, the Mediterranean. There we shall see many lands famous in the history of the world. Over the blue Mediterranean the Ph nicians, the earliest sailors and traders we know about, rowed their small boats. Along its shores coasted the Greek triremes, with their three banks of oars and their one large sail, on their peaceful journeys to their colonies in Italy or Sicily. On its surface floated the war galleys of the proud Romans, bearing the soldiers who were to meet and subdue all the nations around its shores. Later the cruel Turks crossed it, fighting to set the crescent of Mohammed above the cross of Christ. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The arms of Tarifa are a castle on waves, with a key at the window, and the device is not unaptly symbolical of her mediaeval history, when her possessors played janitors of the Strait, and merrily levied blackmail - the irregular tan]? Of those days - upon any vessel which desired to pass. The little town itself is picturesquely situated in the deepest embrace of the curving Strait, and the view looking westward - with the lighthouse rising sharp and sheer against the sky, from the jutting cluster of rock and building about its base. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mediterranean: A Memoir Physical, Historical, and Nautical The undertaking, though heavy, is nevertheless not wanting either in interest or importance: the Mediterranean Sea, so secondary in extent compared with others, being, per 86, of vast surface, with many of its characteristics on the grandest scale. Besides, viewing it as the actual site where the intellectual culture to which we are most directly indebted was first developed, it cannot but be regarded for its portentous historical occurrences; nor will a sailor fbrget that it is the sea whereon the fleets of Carthage, Greece, and-rome contended in former days, and those of Spain, France, Italy, and England in later times. The grand object of travelling, ' Said Dr. Johnson to General Paoli, 'is to see the, shores of the Mediter ranean. On those shores Were the four great empires of the world the Assyrian, the pers1an, the Greek, and the Roman. All our religion, almost all our arts, almost all that sets us above savages, has come to us from the shores of the Mediterranean.' Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mediterranean Trip: A Short Guide to the Principal Points on the Shores of the Western Mediterranean and the Levant For many people, sea-sickness is inevitable. The best medical authorities agree that, like any other sickness, it is to be avoided if possible. Do not, therefore, delude yourself with the notion that sea sickness will do you good. Have the system in good order before sailing. A voyage undertaken after days of work and worry in getting ready to sail, or after a series of heavy dining and wining parties, is sure to be uncomfortable. Take life as easily as possible before going aboard ship; and have the digestive organs in good condition by means of gentle purgatives and the use of a plain and simple diet for a day or two before sailing. Book excerpt: Excerpt from African Shores of the Mediterranean IT is proverbially difficult proprie communia dicere, or to be original without becoming also unduly imagi native and, although the writers know of no single work which covers the same ground as the present volume, whole literatures have sprung up round the various subjects of which they treat. They can only claim that they have described no place which they did not visit, and no custom which they did not them selves observe during a protracted sojourn in North Africa. I like to think that there is no man but has had kindly feelings for some other, and be for his neighbor, until we bind together the whole family of Adam. I believe that the reader of this book will find in it the strong human feeling, the sense of the needs of men and of brotherhood wide as humanity. These will be the workman's marks of the man who greeted me in the passage with his arms full of mail. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mediterranean Shores of America, Southern California: Its Climatic, Physical, and Meteorological Conditions Climate is a wonderful as well as a powerful factor - be it in religion, arts, sciences, or civilization. It makes morality and creeds; the wild and weird mysteries of Eulesis, the festivals of the Roman Flora, or the orgies that accompanied the feasts and worship of Dionysius or Bacchus, never could have taken place except between certain degrees of latitude. Climate determines the diet, occupation, the diseases of which we shall suffer and die, as well as the average length of our existence; it determines our temper, faculties, and facilities for acquiring knowledge and the arts. Climate is, in fact, as observed by Montesquieu, the most powerful of all empires. We need but observe the effects of the American climate on Europeans, and of the European climate on the Americans, to become convinced of the truth of this assertion. Southern California climatology is quite a study; many of its meteorological results are even real puzzles, - puzzles met with nowhere else. It has many oddities; for instance, one of the greatest peculiarities or oddities of this climate consists in the relative conditions existing between the degrees of temperature and the degrees of atmospheric humidity. It is this atmospheric condition that puzzles all new-comers, and that is incomprehensible to the average observer of meteorological conditions and their results. Lovers of Spain will delight in this roving journey. In it Spain is not so much seen as lived; so sharp are the lines, so compact the siinple scenes and full of color and verve, that they illustrate themselves; and, caught all about the Gypsy life, there is a wealth of lovely land scape, as the trail goes by mountain and plain among the half-dozen cities of marvel that be jewel Spain. The feeling as well as the picture of Spain is here. But it is the human life that holds the center of the scene, and the joy of life is its other name. Song and dance and Wine are in the foreground: song that is poetry and the young traveler has an eye for purity of line in a poem as keen as for the plastic, sculp.
