Download or read book Photobiography written by Akane Kawakami and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-12-02 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Why do photographs interest writers, especially autobiographical writers? Ever since their invention, photographs have featured - as metaphors, as absent inspirations, and latterly as actual objects - in written texts. In autobiographical texts, their presence has raised particularly acute questions about the rivalry between these two media, their relationship to the 'real', and the nature of the constructed self. In this timely study, based on the most recent developments in the fields of photography theory, self-writing and photo-biography, Akane Kawakami offers an intriguing narrative which runs from texts containing metaphorical photographs through ekphrastic works to phototexts. Her choice of Marcel Proust, Herve Guibert, Annie Ernaux and Gerard Mace provides unusual readings of works seldom considered in this context, and teases out surprising similarities between unexpected conjunctions. Akane Kawakami is a Senior Lecturer in French and francophone literature at Birkbeck University of London."

Book Synopsis Almost a Real Doctor by : Robert G Cimer D V M
Download or read book Almost a Real Doctor written by Robert G Cimer D V M and published by . This book was released on 2019-07-10 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a child of the sixties, growing up in the New Jersey suburbs, he delivered kittens, rehabilitated wildlife, and inherited his mother's love for animals; there he found the spark to pursue a career as a veterinarian. However, first, he had to overcome an unsupportive father, a belittling academic advisor, three colleges, and financial hardship. In vet school, he struggled as a mediocre student, aggravated the assistant dean, challenged a combatant intern, punched out a fellow student, while avoiding the wrath of the chief of surgery. Then the naïve Jersey boy worked his first year as a farm animal vet wrestling a pregnant sow, dodging a one-ton Brahma bull, splitting open a rotting cow on a sunbaked Missouri field, and bluffing his way from one farm call to the next. A year later he returned to New Jersey where life really got tough. Here are real stories of a career veterinarian. Hilarious tales, like the house call to the home of a cantankerous old preacher and a box spring full of feral cats. Heart-wrenching scenes, like the euthanasia of a puppy cradled in the arms of a chronically ill boy. The bizarre story of the old women who believed her black Labrador contained the reincarnated soul of her dead mother and was convinced Molly, a.k.a. Mom was pregnant. Thought-provoking drama, like the senior citizen who ended his dog's suffering with a plastic bag attached to the exhaust pipe of his old pick-up truck. Stories of success; the last chance, surgery which saved a dog's life, and stories of failure; a surgical mishap which leads to the death of a German Shepherd Dog.What is it like to be a veterinarian? It's not just about loving animals. It is having sympathy for the animal while having empathy for the owner. It's convincing a pet owner their dog's surgery is more valuable than their next vacation. It's telling a stranger it is time to euthanize the family pet. It's putting your own dog to sleep in front of your children. It's performing a difficult surgery-alone. It's explaining to a distraught client why their pet died during a routine surgical procedure. It's negotiating the cost of a life-saving treatment while struggling to support a family. It's the revelation that veterinary medicine has become a discretionary afterthought for disposable pets. It's the realization that the small-town practice is selling out to greedy corporate America. In three decades of practice, ungrateful clients, angry pet owners, and viscous patients tested his faith. In his own hospital, insubordinate employees, deranged associates, frivolous lawsuits, hurricane Sandy, a nationwide recession, merciless bankers, and a rapidly changing profession, threatened his dream. Of course, he enjoyed every minute of it, or did he?This book will appeal to readers of James Herriot and Dr. Robert Miller, and these colorful stories will attract viewers of current veterinary and pet care reality shows. It will appeal to veterinarians, veterinary para-professionals, vet students, and millions of pet owners who wonder what it is like to be a vet. This book is Marley and Me, meets Patch Adams. This uniquely candid retrospective reveals the truth behind a largely misunderstood profession defined by fluffy reality shows and fanciful stories. Most books ask, "Who wants to be a veterinarian"? ALMOST A REAL DOCTOR asks, "Are you sure you want to be a veterinarian?"

Book Synopsis Electrodynamics of Metamaterials by : Andrey K. Sarychev
Download or read book Electrodynamics of Metamaterials written by Andrey K. Sarychev and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2007 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Local electromagnetic field fluctuations and related enhancement of nonlinear phenomena in metal-dielectric composites near the percolation threshold (percolation composites) have recently become an area of active study, because of the many fundamental problems involved and the high potential for various applications. It has been recognized recently that local field fluctuations can be especially large in the optical and infrared spectral ranges due to the surface plasmon resonance in metallic granules and their clusters. The strong fluctuations of the local electric and magnetic fields result in the enhancement of various optical effects: anomalous absorption, Rayleigh and Raman scattering, generation of the higher harmonic, Kerr nonlinearity, etc. Nonlinear percolation composites are potentially of great practical importance as media with intensity-dependent dielectric functions and, in particular, as nonlinear filters and optical bistable elements. The optical response of nonlinear composites can be tuned, for example, by controlling the volume fraction and morphology of constituents. This book presents a new theory of electromagnetic field distribution and nonlinear optical processes in metal-dielectric composites. The new approach is based on a percolation theory and the fact that the problem of optical excitations in percolation composites mathematically maps the Anderson transition problem in quantum mechanics. The theory predicts localization of the excitations (surface plasmons) in percolation composites and describes in detail the localization pattern that allows one to obtain relatively simple expressions for the enhancement of linear and nonlinear optical responses. Thistheory is supported by recent near-field experiments where the surface plasmon localization has been directly observed in the percolating composites in optical and microwave bands.

Book Synopsis Introduction to Nuclear Reactions by : C.A. Bertulani
Download or read book Introduction to Nuclear Reactions written by C.A. Bertulani and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-01-04 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until the publication of Introduction to Nuclear Reactions, an introductory reference on nonrelativistic nuclear reactions had been unavailable. Providing a concise overview of nuclear reactions, this reference discusses the main formalisms, ranging from basic laws to the final formulae used to calculate measurable quantities. Well known in their fields, the authors begin with a discussion of scattering theory followed by a study of its applications to specific nuclear reactions. Early chapters give a framework of scattering theory that can be easily understood by the novice. These chapters also serve as an introduction to the underlying physical ideas. The largest section of the book comprises the physical models that have been developed to account for the various aspects of nuclear reaction phenomena. The final chapters survey applications of the eikonal wavefunction to nuclear reactions as well as examine the important branch of nuclear transport equations. By combining a thorough theoretical approach with applications to recent experimental data, Introduction to Nuclear Reactions helps you understand the results of experimental measurements rather than describe how they are made. A clear treatment of the topics and coherent organization make this information understandable to students and professionals with a solid foundation in physics as well as to those with a more general science and technology background.
