Book Synopsis Alexandre Vachon by : André N. Vachon
Download or read book Alexandre Vachon written by André N. Vachon and published by Petra Books. This book was released on 2016-12-04 with total page 585 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alexandre is the last child of a family of thirteen, his parents being of modest means and different ethnic origins. Encouraged by his family and the parish Priests, he completes his studies for Priesthood with distinction. Circumstances also lead him to become a science teacher and to pursue studies at Harvard and MIT. Early on, he realizes the need to improve the lot of French-Canadians, not only in the Province of Quebec, but throughout Canada. As Director of the Advanced School of Chemistry and then Dean of the Faculty of Science, and finally as Rector at Laval University, he encourages French-Canadian youth to choose scientific studies and, while maintaining good relations with English Canadians, to take their due place in the Canadian society. The Church recognizes his talents and, in 1939, turns to him to lead the Ottawa diocese: quite a challenge for the new Bishop due to the rivalry that still prevails between the French- and English-speaking people of the diocese. Rome notices the success of his work, particularly of the 1947 Marian Congress, and he is entrusted with new responsibilities which extends to the Church at large.
Book Synopsis Communicating in Canada's Past by : Gene Allen
Download or read book Communicating in Canada's Past written by Gene Allen and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2009-11-14 with total page 694 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Communicating in Canada's Past evolved out of essays presented at the inaugural Conference on Media History in Canada of 2006, which brought together media historians from across the disciplines and from both French and English Canada. The first collection of its kind, this volume assembles both well-established and up-and-coming scholars to address sizable gaps in the literature on media history in Canada. Communicating in Canada's Past includes a substantial introduction to media history as a field of study, historiographical essays by senior scholars Mary Vipond, Paul Rutherford, and Fernande Roy, and original research essays on a range of subjects, including print journalism, radio, television, and advertising. Editors Gene Allen and Daniel J. Robinson have provided a sophisticated, wide-ranging introduction for those who are new to media history while also assembling a valuable collection of new research and theory for those already familiar with the field.

Book Synopsis What is Québécois Literature? by : Rosemary Chapman
Download or read book What is Québécois Literature? written by Rosemary Chapman and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2013 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The question 'What is Québécois literature?' might seem innocent and easily answerable. But as Rosemary Chapman shows in this compelling study, answering that question requires no less than the charting of the entire cultural history of French Canada, the contextualizing of francophone writing in Canada within postcolonialism, and the challenging of literary history to rethink its nation-based framework. Brilliantly navigating these ambitions, she provides the first major literary history of Québec, what will be compulsory reading for scholars in francophone postcolonial studies and an ideal introduction for anglophone scholars of Canadian literature.
