Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For each of us, there is a point in time when the course of our actions taken will change or firmly seal the direction of our life. For fifty-five-year-old Allyson Gregory, her defining moment was when she was eighteen and a college freshman. Because of a brief fool-hearted relationship, she had become pregnant. When the boyfriend quickly fled town, her twin sister, Jackie, and their roommate, Bets, rallied around a frightened, brokenhearted Allyson to help her face that nightmare together. Every year, on August 8, Allyson relives the memory of the birth of her baby boy and then the painful time that followed when she gave him up for adoption. Because of her Christian upbringing, abortion was never an option. Adoption was the only avenue for the young Allyson. As the years passed, Allyson graduated college, met and married Kyle Gregory, and they had a daughter, Shelley Ann. Starting and building a pottery business with her sister, Jackie, gave her life enrichment with her family. Throughout all the events of those busy years, deep in the recesses of her heart and mind lingered the shadow of her baby boy. What has his life been like? Was he loved and cared for? Did he hate her for giving him up? She could not rest her thoughts on the all-important question: Was he all right? Often it is in the midst of difficulty that we find our greatest opportunities to experience God's love. We know that our trials are a part of our spiritual journey and that our Lord will mature us through the suffering as we submit to His will. I wanted to write a story about just such a woman, Allyson Gregory, facing and dealing with devastating loss. In Allyson's Journey, Backward, we meet the baby boy, Matthew Williamson, now a grown man and suffering from leukemia. Because of the urgency of this life-or-death situation, he is able to obtain his adoption papers to find his birth parents' information. He is humbled that she is anxious to help him through the bone marrow transplant process. Allyson gave him life once, and now she wants to help restore that life to good health. As the various characters weave themselves throughout the story, Allyson and Matthew rebuild their own lives with a renewed strength and pride. I hope you will be interested in reading the fictional story, Allyson's Journey, Backward, as I believe that the issue of teen pregnancy, abortion, and adoption is relevant to today's circumstances. Thank you for your time, and I look forward to hearing from you.

Book excerpt: In 1933 the quiet and gentle life of Baxton, a small rural town in Georgia, is disrupted when native son and world traveler, Jason Randolph, returns after an absence of eleven years. Mystery surrounds the simultaneous arrival of Josephine, an infamous beauty, who had visited Baxton only once before, eleven years earlier. Spunky nine-year-old Sunny Leigh and her "worst" friend, Jimbo Byrd, observe the developing crises and become participants in the fast-moving events. Sunny's parents, Allyson and David Leigh, play their parts in the drama on another level, as do the other inhabitants of this quintessential southern town. As they go about their Depression-era lives, they eventually uncover in one short summer the connection between events past and present. Jason's sister Fanny allows her intense hatred of Josephine to goad Fanny to an unspeakable act of destruction. In addition, Jason's good intentions are destroyed by an unexpected disaster, the Leighs and their neighbors confront the Ku Klux Klan, and the whole town is affected by a mysterious death. The surprise ending features Governor Eugene Talmadge, a real personage among otherwise fictitious characters. Integral to the story are Eldora and Willie Jackson, who have their own troubles to deal with, even as they become caught up in the towns problems. It is Eldora who teaches Sunny the real meaning of "journey proud". She and Willie provide wisdom that will remiain with the reader long after the book is laid aside. Other dividends of Journey Proud are its gentle humor woven into the picture of a bygone time and its people who considered that they had all the luxuries of life even if they lacked some of the necessities.

Lydia has seen her before, and these frequent sightings are becoming a concern to her. The woman never approaches, just stares. During Lydia's twenty-six years of life, there has been doubt and puzzlement that has filtered in her private life for as long as she can remember. Her parents always seemed to have guarded looks, then would quickly look away. What was wrong? And now there seems to be a woman following her. Questions that pop into Lydia's head never get a solid answer. As a child, Lydia had happenings within the structure of her parents' lives. She just tried to accept them as they were and not cause trouble. She knew that she could always trust her dad but never had that same secure feeling about her mother. A child accepts family problems as just being the normal for them. Up until recently, Lydia has tried not to dwell on the strange feelings or questions within her mind, about the tension, just hoping it does not involve her. But a hint of uncomfortable doubt or uneasiness lingers. In America, we are made up of mixtures of diversities of culture and ways of life. Breeding and background rarely rears its ugly head as we become adults. Finding our own roots and knowing from whom we are descended is often just a passing interest. Such knowledge can be enlightening at times or can be a little fearful. Lydia comes face-to-face with a prejudice attitude, forcing her to see the damage that can be inflicted on another human being. Will she have to dig deep into her own beginnings for her own peace of mind?

Book excerpt: The legendary lost novel in which fourteen-year-old Preston Wildey-King must choose between his all-consuming passion for Pepsi Cola and his love for schoolmate Peggy. "He walked into the turbulent super market. There were people everywhere. His eyes swept over the shelves and stabilised on a large stack of Pepsi-colas. He could almost experience the cool fizzy liquid descending his parched throat." Written by June-Alison Gibbons when she was only 16, The Pepsi Cola Addict is considered one of the great works of twentieth-century outsider literature. More than just a literary curiosity, however, this tale of a teenager whose passion for a well-known cola drink threatens to ruin his life is the uniquely vivid expression of a young woman trying to make sense of the confusing, often brutal world she in which found herself. Published in 1982 by a vanity press who took £800 from its young author and gave her only a single book in return, it's thought that fewer than ten original copies still exist in the world. Shortly after its publication, June-Alison and her sister Jennifer would become infamous as "The Silent Twins" and find themselves cruelly incarcerated for over a decade in Broadmoor Hospital. This author-approved edition makes June-Alison Gibbon's remarkable vision widely available for the first time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are language and consciousness co-evolving? Can psychedelic experience cast light on this topic? In the Western world, we stand at the dawn of the psychedelic age with advances in neuroscience; a proliferation of new psychoactive substances, both legal and illegal; the anthropology of ayahuasca use; and new discoveries in ethnobotany. From scientific papers to the individual trip reports on the Vaults of Erowid and the life work of Terence McKenna, Alexander and Ann Shulgin, and Stanislav Grof, we are converging on new knowledge of the mind and how to shift its functioning for therapeutic, spiritual, problem-solving, artistic and/or recreational purposes. In our culture, pychonautics, the practices of individuals and small groups using techniques such as meditation, shamanic ritual, ecstatic dance and substances such as LSD and psilocybin for personal exploration, is a field of action and thought in its infancy. The use of psychonautic practice as a site of research and a method of knowledge production is central to this work, the first in-depth book focusing on psychedelics, consciousness, and language. Xenolinguistics documents the author's eleven-year adventure of psychonautic exploration and scholarly research; her original intent was to understand a symbolic language system, Glide, she acquired in an altered state of consciousness. What began as a deeply personal search, led to the discovery of others, dubbed xenolinguists, with their own unique linguistic objects and ideas about language from the psychedelic sphere. The search expanded, sifting through fields of knowledge such as anthropology and neurophenomenology to build maps and models to contextualize these experiences. The book presents a collection of these linguistic artifacts, from glossolalia to alien scripts, washed ashore like messages in bottles, signals from Psyche and the alien Others who populate her hyperdimensional landscapes. With an entire chapter dedicated to Terence and Dennis McKenna and sections dedicated to numerous other xenolinguists, this book will appeal to those interested in language/linguistics and the benefits of psychedelic self-exploration, and to readers of science fiction.

Book excerpt: From the creator of the popular website Ask a Manager and New York’s work-advice columnist comes a witty, practical guide to 200 difficult professional conversations—featuring all-new advice! There’s a reason Alison Green has been called “the Dear Abby of the work world.” Ten years as a workplace-advice columnist have taught her that people avoid awkward conversations in the office because they simply don’t know what to say. Thankfully, Green does—and in this incredibly helpful book, she tackles the tough discussions you may need to have during your career. You’ll learn what to say when • coworkers push their work on you—then take credit for it • you accidentally trash-talk someone in an email then hit “reply all” • you’re being micromanaged—or not being managed at all • you catch a colleague in a lie • your boss seems unhappy with your work • your cubemate’s loud speakerphone is making you homicidal • you got drunk at the holiday party Praise for Ask a Manager “A must-read for anyone who works . . . [Alison Green’s] advice boils down to the idea that you should be professional (even when others are not) and that communicating in a straightforward manner with candor and kindness will get you far, no matter where you work.”—Booklist (starred review) “The author’s friendly, warm, no-nonsense writing is a pleasure to read, and her advice can be widely applied to relationships in all areas of readers’ lives. Ideal for anyone new to the job market or new to management, or anyone hoping to improve their work experience.”—Library Journal (starred review) “I am a huge fan of Alison Green’s Ask a Manager column. This book is even better. It teaches us how to deal with many of the most vexing big and little problems in our workplaces—and to do so with grace, confidence, and a sense of humor.”—Robert Sutton, Stanford professor and author of The No Asshole Rule and The Asshole Survival Guide “Ask a Manager is the ultimate playbook for navigating the traditional workforce in a diplomatic but firm way.”—Erin Lowry, author of Broke Millennial: Stop Scraping By and Get Your Financial Life Together

Book excerpt: A moving and personal journey, along rugged coasts and through remote villages and cities, in search of the traces of those accused of witchcraft in seventeenth-century Scotland. 'It's summer. I stand where perhaps Ellen stood, in this ground thick with new thistle and long grass. She would have kenned this coast in all weathers: in the summer when it was as gentle as a lake and in the winter, with the high winds and stinging salt spray.' In Ashes and Stones we visit modern memorials and standing stones, and roam among forests and hedge mazes, folklore and political fantasies. From fairy hills to forgotten caves, we explore a spellbound landscape. Allyson Shaw untangles the myth of witchcraft and gives voice to those erased by it. Her elegant and lucid prose weaves together threads of history and feminist reclamation to create a vibrant memorial. This is the untold story of the witches' monuments of Scotland and the women's lives they mark. Ashes and Stones is a trove of folklore linking the lives of contemporary women to the horrors of the past, a record of resilience and a call to choose and remember our ancestors.
