Download or read book Read the Cultural Other written by Shi-xu and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2008-08-22 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Read the Cultural Other contains studies on non-Western discourse. It has two principal aims. Firstly, it argues that the study of non-Western, non-White, and Third-World discourses should become a legitimate, necessary, and routine part of international discourse scholarship. Hitherto, non-Western, non-White, and Third-Word discourses have been relegated and marginalized to a 'local', 'particular', or 'other' place in (or, one might argue, outside) the mainstream. To reclaim their place, the book deconstructs the rhetoric of universalism and the continued preoccupation with Western discourse in the profession, and stresses the cultural nature of discourse, both ordinary and disciplinary, as it outlines a culturally pluralist vision. Secondly, in order to take the multicultural view seriously, it explores the complexity, diversity, and forms of otherness of non-Western discourse by examining the case of China and Hong Kong's discourses of the decolonization of the latter. Far too often, non-Western discourse has been stereotyped as externally discrete, internally homogeneous, and formally containable within a 'universal', 'general', or 'integrated' model. The present work focuses on China and Hong Kong's discourses, which have been marginalized by their Western counterparts. Through culturally eclectic linguistic analysis and local cultural analysis, it identifies and highlights the specific ways of speaking of China and Hong Kong - their concepts, concerns, aspirations, resistance, verbal strategies, etc. - with respect to similar or different issues. The culturally pluralist view and analytical practice proffered here call for a radical cultural change in international scholarship on language, communication, and discourse.

Download or read book Journalism written by Jo A. Cates and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2004-05-30 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Journalism: A Guide to the Reference Literature is a critically annotated bibliographic guide to print and electronic sources in print and broadcast journalism. The first edition was published in 1990; the second in 1997. It has been described as one of the critical reference sources in journalism today, and it is a key bibliographic guide to the literature. Choice magazine called it a benchmark publication for which there are no comparable sources. The format is similar to the second edition. What makes this edition significantly different is the separation of Commercial Databases and Internet Resources. Commercial Databases includes standard fee-based resources. The new chapter on Internet sources features Web-based resources not included in the commercial databases chapter as well as portals, other online files, listservs, newsgroups, and Web logs/blogs. All chapters have been revised, and there are significant revisions in Directories, Yearbooks, and Collections; Miscellaneous Sources; Core Periodicals; Societies and Associations; and Research Centers and Archives. The second edition has 789 entries. The third edition contains almost 1,000 entries. James Carey of Columbia University, who provided the foreword for the first two editions, has updated his foreword for this edition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mass communication is an inter-disciplined domain. It can't understand as stand alone subject, because it deals with society and culture at one hand and technology at the other. Thus this book was needed that could give a comprehensive explanation of terms, concepts, theories and principles at one place. In recent times mass media has grown as a widespread industry which is working all over the world. Here in this book it is the sincere effort of the author to put the matter and facts, myths and realities all in a lucid manner. This book is designed keeping in view the average reader and beginners as well. This book will quench the thirst of knowledge in this field and it is the sincere hope of the author. If it proves to be of little value to the readers, all efforts and hardships of the author will amply be awarded. This book is created for the needs of students relating to the area of journalism and mass communication. As social contexts and milieus undergo changes and get increasingly complex, journalism too undergoes transformations, and gets ever more crucial to the running of a society. In such a scenario, it becomes imperative that one considers the import journalism carries, and how the issues and problems in it are central to how we perceive the world.
