Book Synopsis The Medieval Warm Period by : Malcolm K. Hughes
Download or read book The Medieval Warm Period written by Malcolm K. Hughes and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Medieval Warm Period and the Little Ice Age are widely considered to have been the major features of the Earth's climate over the past 1000 years. In this volume the issue of whether there really was a Medieval Warm Period, and if so, where and when, is addressed. The types of evidence examined include historical documents, tree rings, ice cores, glacial-geological records, borehole temperature, paleoecological data and records of solar receipts inferred from cosmogenic isotopes. Growth in the availability of several of these types of data in recent years, and technical advances in their derivation and use, warrant this state-of-the-art re-examination of Medieval Warm Period. The book will be of value to all those with an interest in the natural variability of the climate system, for example those concerned with anticipating and detecting anthropogenic climate change.

Book Synopsis New Mexico Vegetation by : William A. Dick-Peddie
Download or read book New Mexico Vegetation written by William A. Dick-Peddie and published by UNM Press. This book was released on 1993 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1993 and now available for the first time in paperback, this book remains one of the few authoritative vegetation compilations for a western state. It is the first comprehensive study of the biological history and evolution of New Mexico's vegetation and includes a detailed account of the distribution of plant communities in the state today. Discussed are the following major types of vegetation: tundra and coniferous forest, woodland and savanna, grassland, scrubland, riparian, and wetlands. For each type, information is provided on the principal plant species. In addition, for each vegetation type special attention is given to describing how plants sharing a common location interact and, in particular, how human activity impacts on each type. Much of New Mexico's vegetation is in some stage of succession as a result of human-initiated disturbances such as fire, logging, and livestock grazing. The book ends with a detailed description of species of special concern and what is being done to preserve examples of vegetation types within the state. A map of the state's vegetation, including types not found on existing maps, accompanies the book. The classifications of vegetation employed here are easily recognizable in the field, which makes them of greater use to the public as well as to resource managers, researchers, and students.

Book excerpt: This important volume reviews the status of investigations aimed at deciphering the geologic, biogeographic, and archaeological records for the Quaternary Era—the last million years of geologic time-for the area of continental United States. Over eighty Quaternary scientists have contributed to the fifty-five chapters divided into four main parts. Part 1 treats the areal geology, with emphasis on the stratigraphy of the glaciated areas east of the Rocky Mountains, unglaciated eastern and central United States, and western United States. Part 2 deals with biogeography: phytogeography and palynology, animal geography and evolution. Part 3 deals with archaeology prehistory in the northeastern states, southeastern states, plains, desert west, and Pacific Coast including Alaska. Part 4 covers many diverse Quaternary studies on—the continental shelves, isotope geochemistry, paleopedology, the geochemistry of some lake sediments, paleohydrology, glaciers and climate, volcanic-ash chronology, paleomagnetism, neo-tectonics, dendrochronology, and theoretical paleoclimatology. Originally published in 1965. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2005-11-10 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mesa Verde, Chaco Canyon, Canyon de Chelly, and Paquimé are well known to tourists and scholars alike as emblems of the American Southwest. This region has been the scene of intense archaeological investigations for more than a hundred years, with more research done here than in any other part of the United States. With contributions from well-known archaeologists, "Southwest Archaeology in the Twentieth Century" reviews the histories of major archaeological topics of the region during the twentieth century, giving particular attention to the vast changes in southwestern archaeology during the later decades of the century. Included are the huge influence of field schools, the rise of cultural resource management (CRM), the uses and abuses of ethnographic analogy, the intellectual contexts of archaeology in Mexico, and current debates on agriculture, sedentism, and political complexity. This book provides an authoritative retrospective of intellectual trends as well as a synthesis of current themes in the arena of the American Southwest. -- From publisher's description.
