Book excerpt: Applying practical tools to the volatile process of negotiating Prognosticators apply Monte Carlo Analysis (MCA) to determine the likelihood and significance of a complete range of future outcomes; Real Options Analysis (ROA) can then be employed to develop pricing structures, or options, for such outcomes. Richard Razgaitis' Dealmaking shows readers how to apply these powerful valuation tools to a variety of business processes, such as pricing, negotiating, or living with a "deal," be it a technology license, and R&D partnership, or an outright sales agreement. Dealmaking distinguishes itself from other negotiating guides not only by treating negotiations as an increasingly common situation, but also by presenting a tool-based approach that creates flexible, practical valuation models. This forward-thinking guide includes a variety of checklists, case studies, and a CD-ROM with the appropriate software. Richard Razgaitis (Bloomsbury, NJ) is a Managing Director at InteCap, Inc. He has over twenty-five years of experience working with the development, commercialization, and strategic management of technology, seventeen of which have been spent in the commercialization of intellectual property.

But recently, in the light of changes associated with globalisation, this has come under scrutiny both empirically and theoretically. This book analyses the continuing but changing role of states in the international arena, and their relationships with a wide range of non-state actors, which possess increasingly salient capabilities to structure global politics and economics.

This fascinating book exposes the action of 'invisible colleges' of scientists - loose groups of prominent scientific experts who combine practical experience of risk and control with advisory responsibility - in the formulation of international standards. Drawing upon the domains of medicines, 'novel foods' and food hygiene, David Demortain investigates new regulatory concepts emerging from invisible colleges, highlighting how they shape consensus and pave the way for international.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is estimated that literally billions of residents in urban and peri-urban areas of Africa, Asia, and Latin America are served by onsite sanitation systems (e.g. various types of latrines and septic tanks). Until recently, the management of faecal sludge from these onsite systems has been grossly neglected, partially as a result of them being considered temporary solutions until sewer-based systems could be implemented. However, the perception of onsite or decentralized sanitation technologies for urban areas is gradually changing, and is increasingly being considered as long-term, sustainable options in urban areas, especially in low- and middle-income countries that lack sewer infrastructures. This is the first book dedicated to faecal sludge management. It compiles the current state of knowledge of the rapidly evolving field of faecal sludge management, and presents an integrated approach that includes technology, management, and planning based on Sandecs 20 years of experience in the field. Faecal Sludge Management: Systems Approach for Implementation and Operation addresses the organization of the entire faecal sludge management service chain, from the collection and transport of sludge, and the current state of knowledge of treatment options, to the final end use or disposal of treated sludge. The book also presents important factors to consider when evaluating and upscaling new treatment technology options. The book is designed for undergraduate and graduate students, and engineers and practitioners in the field who have some basic knowledge of environmental and/or wastewater engineering.

Book excerpt: Since the 1970s and particularly the works of Tüxen (1978) and Géhu & Rivas-Martínez (1981), dynamico-catenal phytosociology has facilitated the integration of vegetation dynamics by more precisely describing the trajectories of vegetation series. A national habitat mapping program (CarHAB), launched by France’s Ministry of Ecology, aims to map the vegetation and vegetation series of metropolitan France at a scale of 1: 25,000 by 2025. In this context, Corsica has been selected as a pilot region, due to its unique characteristics regarding Mediterranean and alticole vegetation. This book describes in detail the vegetation series and geoseries (ecology, structure, dynamic trajectories, effects of anthropogenic factors on vegetation dynamics, catenal positioning in the landscape) of two Corsican sectors: Cap Corse and Biguglia pond. These two study sites were selected using two methods: • For Cap Corse, the typology and mapping are based on an inductive approach, which seeks to understand the dynamics of vegetation by drawing on the mature, substitutional, pioneering and anthropogenic associations likely to exist within a tessellar envelope. These various dynamic stages characterize “the vegetation series” (sigmetum or synassociation), the fundamental unit of symphytosociology (Géhu 2006; Biondi 2011). The aim of symphytosociology is, therefore, to define the vegetation series; in other words, it seeks to identify the repetitive combinations of syntaxa under homogeneous ecological conditions. • For Biguglia pond, the typology and mapping are based on a deductive approach, which combines (under SIG) the ecological descriptor maps with the vegetation mapping, in order to reveal the tesselas and the natural potential vegetation that underlies them. Thanks to the improvement of GIS techniques, this approach has been frequently used to characterize plant landscapes from vegetation to vegetation geoseries since the 2000s, with applications to the conservation management of natural and semi-natural environments.

Book excerpt: Using the ecosystem concept as his starting point, the author examines the complex relationship between premodern armed forces and their environment at three levels: landscapes, living beings, and diseases. The study focuses on Europe's Meuse Region, well-known among historians of war as a battleground between France and Germany. By analyzing soldiers' long-term interactions with nature, this book engages with current debates about the ecological impact of the military, and provides new impetus for contemporary armed forces to make greater effort to reduce their environmental footprint.

Are they embracing the information economy? To what extent are innovation, science, technology and economies becoming global? What are the new growth industries and occupations? With over 160 indicators, 60% of them new to this edition, the volume provides a comprehensive picture of countries’ performance in the areas of science, technology and industry. It uses an improved classification of technology and knowledge-intensive industries. New indicators address emerging policy issues: international mobility of human capital, relative innovative performance as measured by patent families, skills in the information economy, diffusion of the Internet and electronic commerce. Resources devoted to innovation in emerging areas such as biotechnology, environment, health and information and communication technologies are measured for the first time. A new section on the information economy relies on the latest data from official sources. With the essential findings presented in bullet points and methodological notes on indicators and data sources, this publication combines statistical rigour with easy access and readability. An electronic version makes individual sections, an elaborate data appendix and links to the databases readily available. The electronic version also gives users “clickable” access to the data used in charts and figures. AREAS COVERED: New resources for the knowledge-based economy - Human capital and international mobility - R&D performance - Role of government and business in R&D and innovation - Science and innovation performance - Resources and infrastructure for the information economy - Diffusion of Internet technologies and electronic commerce - Contribution of the information and communication technologies to economic performance - International trade - Foreign direct investment - Strategic alliances and cross-border, mergers and acquisitions - Internationalisation of science and technology - Industrial structure and productivity growth - Technology and knowledge-intensive industries and their performance. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This innovative book portrays the state-of-the-art of coopetition strategy regarded as a compelling mindset to exploit entirely the potential of actors’ interdependencies (firms, governments, suppliers, customers, scientists and partners) in today’s global scenarios. It provides the rudiments for navigating an exploration journey into a virtually new and emergent management subfield. This volume presents three key distinctive features: it is the first attempt that delves systematically and rigorously into coopetition strategy and coopetitive behaviour; it clearly elucidates the contribution of coopetition to the advancement of strategic management and managerial practice; it is the outcome of the collective brains of several scholars, with diverse geographical roots and backgrounds, who cultivate original research on co-opetition strategy from a variety of perspectives (economic, managerial, political) and multiple methods (theory building, game-theoretical, experimental and inductive case-based inquiries). Looking into this volume, the reader will realize that, while the topic is at the beginning of its lifecycle, coopetition strategy has touched an important crossroads which solicits a more comprehensive and systematic assessment. If mindfully formulated and implemented, this hybrid strategic option is able to increase returns and generate value for shareholders, entrepreneurs, managers and coopetitors.

Book excerpt: The conventional approach to risk communication, based on a centralized and controlled model, has led to blatant failures in the management of recent safety related events. In parallel, several cases have proved that actors not thought of as risk governance or safety management contributors may play a positive role regarding safety. Building on these two observations and bridging the gap between risk communication and safety practices leads to a new, more societal perspective on risk communication, that allows for smart risk governance and safety management.
