Book excerpt: Alliances between competitors where an established firm provides access to its marketing and distribution channels are an important real-world phenomenon. We analyze a market where an established firm, firm A, produces a product of well-known quality, and a firm with an unknown brand, firm B, has to choose to produce high or low quality. Firm A observes firm B's quality choice but consumers do not. Hence, firm B is subject to a moral hazard problem which can potentially be solved by firm A. Firm A can accept or reject to form an alliance with firm B, which is observed by consumers. If an alliance is formed, firm A is providing an implicit certification about the rival's product: consumers can infer that firm B is a strong competitor (high quality), as otherwise why would the established firm accept to form an alliance? The mechanism we discover allows for an economic interpretation of several types of business strategies.

Book excerpt: Some companies discover the value of cross-border collaborations only after fighting long, head-to-head battles that leave them financially exhausted, intellectually depleted, and vulnerable to the next wave of competition and innovation. Grudgingly they come to recognize the benefits of sharing and trading control, costs, skills, capital, information, technology and access to markets - but only after a heavy price. Now companies can begin to learn the value of collaboration and how to capitalize on strong, flexible alliances by reading Collaborating to Compete. Written by McKinsey & Company's leading international management consultants, this strategic and operational guide provides practical information on how to design effective cross-border alliances-based on hundreds of case studies worldwide that illustrate the common factors that go into winning alliances. The authors argue that successful companies are transferring competence across borders by retaining key managers from acquired companies and by employing other strategies designed to reap the best from both companies in the consolidation. The authors also argue that effective collaboration is based on a long-term sequence of actions and that alliances fail when they're driven by hasty shortsighted goals. The authors highlight key steps in putting together a powerful alliance including: overcoming the resistance to alliances from executives and managers; finding the best structure and partner to meet a given set of goals; building flexibility into your collaboration to permit changes in legal and financial structures; ensuring good, frequent communication between you and your partners; setting up internal mechanisms to resolveconflicts quickly; and rescuing poorly conceived alliances. In reading about the activity of leading companies in the U.S., Japan, and Europe, readers will discover that even acquisitions - once a strictly predatory enterprise - are now taking on a more collaborative color. Drawing on McKinsey's strategies from the Triad, Collaborating to Compete goes on to show why cross-border strategy approaches need to account for the unique regulatory structural, and cultural barriers presented by individual countries and regions. The book shows that by following through on the basic prescription: U.S. companies can "ally for advantage" to open up the once impenetrable Japanese market; Japanese MNCs can successfully move into those complex U.S. markets; U.S., Japan, and other countries can crack the European Economic Community; and European companies can transcend obstacles and make successful U.S. acquisitions. Collaborating to Compete also looks hard at the dramatic restructuring of Europe and Asia and points out how European companies will have to use cross-border acquisitions and alliances to respond to new threats from global and Pan-European competitors.

Book excerpt: Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2010 in the subject Business economics - Offline Marketing and Online Marketing, grade: A, The University of Liverpool, language: English, abstract: The research describes the process of strategic alliance and its impact on the global marketplace. Strategic Alliance has evolved as an essential tool for the corporate sector to reduce the pressure of competition and create a sustainable competitive advantage in the marketplace. The researcher has tried to explain the process of creating an alliance and has chosen the case of Shaca Construction and Urban Fabrik, construction companies for evaluating the above assertion. The researcher has gathered relevant primary and secondary resources for understanding the past developments of the process and compares them with the present situation. The researcher has used a suitable research methodology for evaluating the research aims and objectives. The researcher evaluated that the strategic alliance helps the firm in amalgamating their resources build better construction services to their customers. The alliance process expands the reach of the firms to a larger consumer base and strengthens the company resources against the competition. However, there are some pitfalls in the process of strategic alliance. The organisations must ensure that they have the capability to achieve the objective set by the alliance and trust each other regarding management and financial planning of the process. The findings of the study suggest that a strategic alliance has been growing rapidly in the market. The strategic alliance is a useful tool for improving the conditions of the international marketplace as it contributes extensively in reducing the competition and unifying the resources of the business houses to develop better and quality services for the customers. However, the reduction is competition can also lead to fall in the level of quality which will worsen the market condition.

This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new study takes a keen look at the problems facing the international community due to conflicts arising from applications of varying competition laws by different competition authorities to international airline alliances. As a result of privatisation, deregulation, liberalisation and globalisation, international air carriers form alliances with one another in order to cope with growing competition in the international air transport market. This book clearly provides an introduction to the background to and origin of airline alliances, different models of alliances and the related anti-competitive practices resulting from existing international airline alliances. The potential anti-competitive practices resulting from these cross-border alliances trigger a great deal of concern from various competition authorities. Thus, this study goes on to provide a detailed analysis regarding the relevant EC competition law and US antitrust law and their applications to alliance activities. The comparison of different applications of EC competition law and US antitrust law to international airline alliances provides leading research results first-hand. In the conclusion, the essential elements regarding establishing a level playing field in the international air transport market are identified and the author provides possible solutions for the harmonisation of different applications of competition law to international airline alliances.

Book excerpt: An oligopoloy (from the Greek, few sellers ) is a market that is dominated by a few large and powerful players. As Steve Hannaford documents with numerous examples, virtually every industry today--from medical equipment to airlines, toy retailing to oil--is trending in this direction, in the greatest movement toward industry consolidation and concentration since the turn of the 20th century. Everyone who reads the newspapers is aware of the dizzying pace of mergers, acquisitions, buyouts, and alliances, between big companies and small companies in every industry. Such deals, along with the growing social and political clout of the biggest companies, are critical issues for the economy and for our future as consumers. Charting the course of this trend around the world, Hannaford examines the motivations behind consolidation into corporate empires, how companies exert political pressure to their advantage, and how the actions of the most dominant players, such as Coca-Cola, Wal-Mart, Viacom, Dell, ExxonMobil, Citigroup, and others, affect the choices we have at the supermarket, the drugs we are prescribed, and the movies we watch. Considering the implications of industry concentration on competition, technological innovation, business management, strategy, consumer behavior, and politics, Hannaford paints a provocative, but ultimately balanced, picture of big business and its impact on society.
