Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1920, the US government, at the request mostly of a new army of female voters in America, turned off the tap that had served Americans cold beer and liquor. The Volstead Act made the sale of alcohol illegal throughout the forty-eight states. A nation surrounded by water rose up to provide. Liquor came ashore from all directions: the Pacific Coast, the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean, the Atlantic Coast, and across the Great Lakes from Canada. Our story looks at the smuggling from Canada across Lake Ontario. Since colonial times, liquor had been brought legally and illegally, usually to sidestep the paying of taxes on the products. Now it was brought into the country to provide what the government had tried to take away. The Volstead Act inadvertently created a whole new smuggling system. New terms came into the general vocabulary: Prohibition agent, speakeasy, rum runners (who brought the illegal cargo in by water), and bootleggers (who drove the liquor along the nations roadways). Our story will be mainly focused on the rum runners, although the bootleggers will be represented as well. My grandfather, Charles Frederick Scharping, owned a farm on Lower Lake Road that bordered Lake Ontario. In 1955, my parents built a cottage on the farm at the edge of the lake. The spot where our cottage was located, on Scharping Lane, was the spot where rum runners would bring their illegal cargoes. They sold them to the bootleggers for cash. These rum runners braved over fifty miles of water from the shores of Orleans County to the pickup points along the Canadian shore. The return trips were challenged by weather, hijackers, and the US Coast Guard. Waves up to eight feet tall were common during the frequent storms. Many lost their lives. This Volstead Law lasted for twelve years. It was a bloody time where fortunes were made and lives lost.

Parallels are drawn between Amelia and her namesake, and lessons from the past speak to the young girl. With the continued support of her Christian family, Amelia begins to heal. In the wake of the family quest, both heroine and reader, are left to ponder the impact our ancestors might have upon the living. Book excerpt: “A bizarre and darkly funny world . . . There are fables, horror stories, absurd stories, and more serious stories about love.” —Ramona Ausubel, The New York Times Book Review A woman creeps through the ductwork of a quiet home. A medical procedure reveals an object of worship. A carnivorous reptile divides and cauterizes a town. Amelia Gray’s curio cabinet expands in Gutshot, where isolation and coupling are pushed to their dark and outrageous edges. These singular stories live and breathe on their own, pulsating with energy and humanness and a glorious sense of humor. Hers are stories that you will read and reread—raw gems that burrow into your brain, reminders of just how strange and beautiful our world is. These collected stories come to us like a vivisected body, the whole that is all the more elegant and breathtaking for exploring its most grotesque and intimate lightless viscera. “Exhilarating and violently creative, these stories are an assault on expectation. Gutshot is a rare, new original, and Amelia Gray is her own startling genre. This is a book to be experienced, to be taught and obsessed over, to live as a prized weapon on your bookshelf.” —Alissa Nutting, author of Tampa “Gutshot is a wild journey through the singular imagination of Amelia Gray, one of the most ambitious and relentlessly inventive writers of our time. The worlds Gray conjures are gorgeous and gruesome and devastating and stone-cold hilarious—but more than anything, these stories are as fearless and original as they come.” —Laura van den Berg, author of State of Paradise “Viscerally wicked.” —Natalie Beach, O, The Oprah Magazine

When Amelia decides to fence off a portion of her land and allow farmers to tend it, she raises the ire of a powerful cattleman who would rather shed blood than see west Texas taken over by homesteaders. The men who work for Amelia vow to stand by her, but when tensions run this high, one spark of violence could set the whole prairie ablaze. Before she knows it, Amelia and her allies are fighting a battle whose outcome will determine the future of the Southwest. From master storyteller Charles O. Locke, Amelia Rankin is an unforgettable tale of passion, violence, and pride.
