Book Synopsis The Marshall Mission to China, 1945–1947 by : John Hart Caughey
Download or read book The Marshall Mission to China, 1945–1947 written by John Hart Caughey and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2011-08-28 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biotechnology crop production area increased from 1.7 million hectares to 148 million hectares worldwide between 1996 to 2010. While genetically modified food is a contentious issue, the debates are usually limited to health and environmental concerns, ignoring the broader questions of social control that arise when food production methods become corporate-owned intellectual property. Drawing on legal documents and dozens of interviews with farmers and other stakeholders, Corporate Crops covers four case studies based around litigation between biotechnology corporations and farmers. Pechlaner investigates the extent to which the proprietary aspects of biotechnologies--from patents on seeds to a plethora of new rules and contractual obligations associated with the technologies--are reorganizing crop production. The lawsuits include patent infringement litigation launched by Monsanto against a Saskatchewan canola farmer who, in turn, claimed his crops had been involuntarily contaminated by the company's GM technology; a class action application by two Saskatchewan organic canola farmers launched against Monsanto and Aventis (later Bayer) for the loss of their organic market due to contamination with GMOs; and two cases in Mississippi in which Monsanto sued farmers for saving seeds containing its patented GM technology. Pechlaner argues that well-funded corporate lawyers have a decided advantage over independent farmers in the courts and in creating new forms of power and control in agricultural production. Corporate Crops demonstrates the effects of this intersection between the courts and the fields where profits, not just a food supply, are reaped.
Book Synopsis Character Computing by : Alia El Bolock
Download or read book Character Computing written by Alia El Bolock and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-01-01 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book gives an introduction into the theory and practice of the transdisciplinary field of Character Computing, introduced by Alia El Bolock. The latest scientific findings indicate that “One size DOES NOT fit all” in terms of how to design interactive systems and predict behavior to tailor the interaction experience. Emotions are one of the essential factors that influence people’s daily experiences; they influence decision making and how different emotions are interpreted by different individuals. For example, some people may perform better under stress and others may break. Building upon Rosalind Picard’s vision, if we want computers to be genuinely intelligent and to interact naturally with us, we must give computers the ability to recognize, understand, even to have and express emotions and how different characters perceive and react to these emotions, hence having richer and truly tailored interaction experiences. Psychological processes or personality traits are embedded in the existing fields of Affective and Personality Computing. However, this book is the first that systematically addresses this including the whole human character; namely our stable personality traits, our variable affective, cognitive and motivational states as well as our morals, beliefs and socio-cultural embedding. The book gives an introduction into the theory and practice of the transdisciplinary field of Character Computing. The emerging field leverages Computer Science and Psychology to extend technology to include the whole character of humans and thus paves the way for researchers to truly place humans at the center of any technological development. Character Computing is presented from three main perspectives: ● Profiling and sensing the character ● Leveraging characters to build ubiquitous character-aware systems ● Investigating how to extend Artificial Intelligence to create artificial characters

Download or read book A measure of the Self written by Hari Prasad Bangalore and published by Notion Press. This book was released on 2019-05-06 with total page 505 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The whole Creation is a spiritual system. How to understand this. “Life has to be lived forward but understood backward”. In this Creation, everything leads to something. That something leads to something further. That something significant leads us to something Ultimate. But the sure way to lose sight of spirituality in the Creation is to take everything for granted. That’s how we lost sight of valuable clues already. The rarest miracle is to be born as an awakened human being. Science is required for the welfare of the world and spirituality is required for the wellbeing of mankind. Human beings need to be guided very responsibly. We have to inquire into the spiritual dimension of Creation by serious contemplation, even while science is on a romantic trip with cognizable phenomena. Simple awareness takes us to a higher pedestal of awakening - a hyper-awareness. This is awakening. Ordinarily, we lead to three kinds of lives. One-the life we want to lead; two - the life we are leading; three - the life we should be leading. Through Sadhana, we can narrow the gap and make life and more purposeful. God limits Himself to the limits of our understanding.
