Book excerpt: In October of 1956, my twelve year old newly adopted orphan babysitter, Janet Cash and I were staying the night alone on my uncles northern California ranch. During the night, we were attacked by three men, two of them were us navy sailors. Janet was beaten and gang raped by the three men throughout the night, and I was tortured and assaulted. In the morning, Janet was taken to an area called the flats and viciously murdered by the two us navy sailors. They then buried Janet in a clandestine grave on my uncle's ranch. For over twenty five years, I have been looking for Janet. I haven't found her yet, but I have found two major news organizations and three government agencies that have conspired to cover up her disappearance, murder, and even her very existence. Throughout those years, I have been stonewalled, been refused any information that might lead me to her. But in spite of their efforts, I have gathered enough proof and information to lead me to believe that my babysitter Janet wasn't just some sweet, beautiful and courageous young girl from a broken home, but quite possibly an important young girl, maybe a very important young girl, and if the right people knew about her back then, her mere existence might have changed some important people's lives, and/or even changed history. I am determined now, more than ever to find her, and learn as much as I can about her. You see, she saved my life several times during this tragic ordeal, so I owe her my life, and I feel that finding her is the very least I can do to repay her, and exposing the truth about what happened to her is just as important. I believe that the path to the truth to this tragic mystery lies waiting in an unmarked grave, in her bones, in her DNA.

Book excerpt: First published in New Zealand in 1957, Owls Do Cry, was Janet Frame's second book and the first of her thirteen novels. Now approaching its 60th anniversary, it is securely a landmark in Frame's catalog and indeed a landmark of modernist literature. The novel spans twenty years in the Withers family, tracing Daphne's coming of age into a post–war New Zealand too narrow to know what to make of her. She is deemed mad, institutionalized, and made to undergo a risky lobotomy. Margaret Drabble calls Owls Do Cry "a song of survival"—it is Daphne's song of survival but also the author's: Frame was herself misdiagnosed with schizophrenia and scheduled for brain surgery. She was famously saved only when she won New Zealand's premier fiction prize. Frame was among the first major writers of the twentieth century to confront life in mental institutions and Owls Do Cry is important for this perspective. But it is equally valuable for its poetry, its incisive satire, and its acute social observations. A sensitively rendered portrait of childhood and adolescence and a testament to the power of imagination, this early novel is a first–rate example of Frame's powerful, lyric, and original prose.

The beloved sleuthing couple solves a trio of murder cases in the austere beauty of Canada’s New Brunswick. Originally published under the pseudonym Alisa Craig, these three tales are a witty look at murder in a small town—“the epitome of the ‘cozy’ mystery” (Mostly Murder). A Pint of Murder: When Janet Wadman realizes her friend Agatha was murdered with a jar of tainted green beans, her discovery leads to another untimely death. Height-challenged Mountie Madoc Rhys proves more capable than he looks, and Janet is duly impressed. Murder Goes Mumming: Madoc decides to ask Janet for her hand in marriage. But when the newly engaged couple finds their Christmas plans spoiled by murder, the investigating duo once again finds they have a gift for serving justice. A Dismal Thing to Do: Janet witnesses a terrible accident on the back roads of Canada. But after dashing into a nearby barn to get help, someone thanks her by stealing her car and then trying to kill her. Or were they? Madoc arrives and together they work to stop a deadly crime wave in its tracks.

Book excerpt: Clara Gamadge's latest adventure finds the white-haired sleuth in the hospital, at Christmas of all times, a victim of a bad hors d'oevre consumed at the opening of a friend's new mystery book shop, Pushing Murder, in Greenwich Village. A poisoning attempt at the hospital, however, convinces Clara and her family that the mishap at the party was no accident, but attempted murder! Who could possibly want to kill Clara, and why? She hasn't been involved in anycases for quite some time, so the murder attempts must mean she's been drawn into a new case without her knowledge. She suspects that someone will need her services in the near future. Sure enough, an old friend suddenly appears on the scene seeking Clara's help, and a web of ancient deceptions and green ensnares both women, involving them in a deadly game of extortion and murder. As Clara's family, including her charming yet irascible cousin Sadd, rallies to protect both women, Clara directs the investigation from her hospital bed. To her sorrow, however, she finds that the spirit of Christmas is proof against only the chill and is not strong enough to protect them all from the malice of one ambitions man.
