While the economy is diversifying, it remains largely dependent on natural resources. Agriculture and tourism account for nearly half of gross domestic product (GDP).This report aims to promote inclusive green investment in Kenya. It focuses on policy, structural, and investment innovations across the economy and financial sector that would increase capital flows that support sustainable development. Inclusive green investment forms an important part of the broad environmental, social, and governance (ESG) considerations that underpin sustainable investment. Green investment supports economic growth in a clean, resilient, and sustainable manner - such as initiatives to encourage more efficient use of resources, reduce pollution, and mitigate environmental damage. Inclusive investment serves not only investors, but the broad interests of society, particularly low-income segments of the population.

Book excerpt: This first edition of "The Financial System We Need" argues that there is now a historic opportunity to shape a financial system that can more effectively finance the development of an inclusive, green economy. This opportunity is based on a growing trend in policy innovation from central banks, financial regulators and standard setters, who are incorporating sustainability factors into the rules that govern the financial system. The report draws together practical examples of policy changes in banking, capital markets, insurance and institutional investment, drawing on detailed work in countries such as Bangladesh, Brazil, China, Colombia, France, India, Indonesia, Kenya, South Africa, the UK and the USA. It offers a Framework for Action that shows how a systematic approach can now be taken at both the national and international levels.

This necessitates crowding-in private sources to meet financing, efficiency, and technology gaps. However, a lack of bankable projects is a major hurdle. This publication suggests one possible innovative financing approach. The Green Finance Catalyzing Facility (GFCF) proposes a blended finance framework for governments and development entities to better leverage development funds for risk mitigation, generate a pipeline of bankable green infrastructure projects, and directly catalyze private finance. The GFCF provides useful inputs for the current debate on mainstreaming green finance into country financial systems.

This book was released on 2019-09-04 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climate change is one of the greatest challenges of this century. Mitigation requires a large-scale transition to a low-carbon economy. This paper provides an overview of the rapidly growing literature on the role of macroeconomic and financial policy tools in enabling this transition. The literature provides a menu of policy tools for mitigation. A key conclusion is that fiscal tools are first in line and central, but can and may need to be complemented by financial and monetary policy instruments. Some tools and policies raise unanswered questions about policy tool assignment and mandates, which we describe. The literature is scarce, however, on the most effective policy mix and the role of mitigation tools and goals in the overall policy framework.
