It was aliens who guided the ancient Israelites, providing them with manna in the wilderness. ** In the modern world, Downing contends with mainstream religion's refusal to take the subject seriously. Christian liberals don't want to hear the miracles of the Bible were real and Christian conservatives don't want the miracles credited to simple aliens in flying saucers. Thus one can see that Downing, an ordained minister, is bravely risking disapproval from a wide swathe of fellow Christians not ready for his message. Many of the issues discussed by the author raise the issue of ontology, or what is real and what is the nature of being. Rev. Downing believes that recent discoveries in quantum physics tend to confirm that Biblical phenomena could be real. "Modern quantum physics has revealed a world," he states, "that is not full of 'solid objects' on one hand and space on the other, but rather a dynamic world in which solid objects are mostly space, with various types of quantum energy spinning away to create the illusion of solid objects, making it difficult to know for certain what we think we know." As for a possible global cover-up of the UFO phenomenon, Rev. Downing espouses the theory that if UFOs truly carry the angels of Christ, their "strange technology and behavior" may be as upsetting to government scientists as the Resurrection of Jesus was to the disciples. "Their 'real-world' understanding had to expand, and so must ours," he rightfully concludes. This book is for the faithful as well as those who are primarily interested in unexplained historical phenomena as revealed in Biblical as well as other ancient texts, as well as seekers of censored truths concerning the hidden and forbidden knowledge of mankind.

Book excerpt: The thesis of this book is that the Bible contains stories of beings, angels that come down from the sky, and are sometimes associated with objects in the sky such as the "pillar of cloud by day, and pillar of fire by night," which led the Jewish Exodus from Egypt. This UFO is similar to modern UFOs, which one military pilot described as looking like a Tic Tac, cylindrical, white or cloud like in color, about 40 feet long, rounded on each end, with no visible propulsion system. It seems likely that the UFOs seen in modern times are related to the same reality that started the biblical religion in both its Old and New Testament forms. Chapter 3 studies the book of Exodus in great detail, explaining how the Exodus UFO (pillar of cloud and fire) apparently used its propulsion system to part the Red Sea. In the New Testament, it is argued that our modern alien/angels were probably the power that raised Jesus from the dead, and carried the risen Jesus to the Damascus Road where the Apostle Paul was converted (Acts 9). This book has some parallels with Erich Von Daniken's "Chariots of the Gods?", but differs from Von Daniken in that it is argued that the aliens are not "gods," as Von Daniken suggests, but rather beings who have a high knowledge of God, and created the Biblical religions, in both their Jewish and Christian form, to move the human race away from idolatry, and toward a more spiritual sense of the divine reality. Chapter V asks, "Where is Heaven?" and explores the possibility that the resurrection stories of Jesus, where he is able to enter locked rooms after his resurrection, suggests that heaven may be "another dimension" in the midst of us. Modern UFOs are reported to appear and disappear in an instant, suggesting they too may be part of a multi-dimensional reality. Einstein's Theory of Relativity is offered as a clue to understanding some of the strange resurrection stories. This book is an attempt to make sense of biblical stories that suggest the presence of extraterrestrial powers, and to examine modern UFO stories for evidence that biblical angels, and modern aliens, may be the same reality.

But why did they do so and to what ends? How did Christians' claims to foreign status situate them with respect to each other and to the larger Roman world as the new movement grew and struggled to make sense of its own boundaries? Aliens and Sojourners argues that the claim to alien status is not a transparent one. Instead, Benjamin Dunning contends, it shaped a rich, pervasive, variegated discourse of identity in early Christianity. Resident aliens and foreigners had long occupied a conflicted space of both repulsion and desire in ancient thinking. Dunning demonstrates how Christians and others in antiquity capitalized on this tension, refiguring the resident alien as being of a compelling doubleness, simultaneously marginal and potent. Early Christians, he argues, used this refiguration to render Christian identity legible, distinct, and even desirable among the vast range of social and religious identities and practices that proliferated in the ancient Mediterranean. Through close readings of ancient Christian texts such as Hebrews, 1 Peter, the Shepherd of Hermas, and the Epistle to Diognetus, Dunning examines the markedly different ways that Christians used the language of their own marginality, articulating a range of options for what it means to be Christian in relation to the Roman social order. His conclusions have implications not only for the study of late antiquity but also for understanding the rhetorics of religious alienation more broadly, both in the ancient world and today.
