Book excerpt: In the first book of this middle grade sci-fi series, a teen gains alien superpowers that make him popular at school, but put him in mortal danger. Dweeb . . . Dork . . . These are names Ethan Rogers is used to being called in the halls of Metier Junior High. It’s safe to say that he’s an outcast. Outside of a brainy clique of nerds, Ethan doesn’t have many friends. Still, there are advantages to being from his small Wisconsin town, like Metier’s weird history of UFO sightings. For a comic book geek like Ethan, the possibility of seeing an alien is pretty awesome. Until he looks in the mirror on his thirteenth birthday and discovers he is an alien. At first, it’s not as bad as it seems. Ethan suddenly has powers greater than some of his favorite superheroes. Beating the school bully in a fight is pretty rad. And when Ethan foils a robbery attempt, he becomes a local hero. But being in the spotlight isn’t easy for Ethan, especially when he learns his kind has been targeted for termination . . .

My name is Ethan Rogers. I always wanted to see an alien. Just not in the mirror. People used to think I was a wimp. But not anymore. Something happened overnight. Now I am master of a thousand fighting styles-martial arts, wrestling, weaponry. I'd think it was pretty cool . . . if I wasn't running for my life.

Book excerpt: That's when she sees the Shape again. Sees it through the shattered passenger window—silhouetted against a flash of lightning, approaching over the desert hills, maneuvering impossibly. "No …" she whimpers, as Frodo barks and howls. Then a horn sounds and she faces forward—in time to avoid a head-on collision by mere seconds. By the time she skids to a stop on the shoulder of the road, a man is running up to her, apologetic, out of breath, asking if she is okay. She gets out, shrieking and gesturing with her arms, completely hysterical. "Did you see it? Did you see it?" He catches her wrists in his hands and holds them—an overly intimate gesture she could be offended by, but isn't. "I saw a jet," he says, staring into her eyes, continuing to hold her hands. "A jet—they're everywhere out here today. They must be doing maneuvers or something. It's okay, all right? You're okay." She begins to calm down at last, however slightly. There's something about him, something about his mild eyes and soft but firm hands, his shock of dark hair, his soothing voice. She senses something and looks up, sees a fighter jet flying right over the top of them—low enough that she can make out the rivets in its fuselage. It is there and gone before its sharp-edged whine even cuts the air. "See?" he says, releasing her hands. "Just a jet."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dusk, in the middle of nowhere. Beth pulls into a rest area and shuts off the engine. Helicopters can be heard in the distance; Frodo whimpers and whines. There is a drone of crickets as Beth leans against the wheel. The place is abandoned save for a single pickup and camper. She sits back after a moment, stroking the dog’s neck, and rolls her head to look at the truck. It sits silently in the twilight about a hundred feet away: quiet as a tomb, with no sign of a driver. She experiences a wave of nausea—which sends her hurrying toward the restrooms—as the sound of the choppers rushes closer. She collapses over the toilet, vomiting repeatedly, as the helicopters thunder overhead. The pounding of the rotors diminishes as she spits and wipes her mouth. At last she reaches up with trembling fingers and flushes the bowl, and the water swirls down, gurgling. She slowly catches her breath. The crickets drone and Frodo barks. She sits on the floor with her back against the cold cinderblocks—notices a shoe covered in green plastic just outside the stall. She looks up. An eye is visible between the doorjamb and the wall. It blinks as she shrieks and suddenly disappears.

THERE IS A SECRET ALIEN "TERROR TACTIC" THAT IS NOW UNDERWAY WORLDWIDE THAT THREATENS ALL HUMAN LIFE ON THIS PLANET! What do you do when the power blackouts keep occurring and the mysterious disappearances and outright kidnappings continue to mount? According to a small group of astute researchers, the Ultra-Terrestrials will not be destroying our world with laser weapons like in the blockbuster sci-fi movie Independence Day. Evidence indicates they want to capture our souls as well as our minds in order to accomplish their otherworldly "foul deeds." They have no need to blow our fastest military aircraft out of the sky. Their best weapons are not futuristic military ones. Instead, their top-grade artillery against humanity is a numbing form of "high-tech alien mind control." Utilizing a series of bizarre techniques, they are able to trick us into accepting their unorthodox and utterly evil belief systems through manipulative "hallucinatory" effects and establish an emotionless reaction to their far from charitable presence on Earth. According to Montalk.Net, "Mankind is being enslaved by non-human forces who are technologically, psychically and dimensionally superior to us (but not necessarily spiritually, and therein lies our freedom). Through covert mental machinations and hyper-dimensional tricks that employ time travel, they have secretly manipulated and exploited humanity in every way conceivable since the birth of our race, and even our origins are suspect and bear the signs of genetic engineering." Project Alien Mind Control is well underway and thousands of individuals and entire towns are being mentally enslaved! It is important for the well-being of the planet that we all join the alien resistance and learn to elude their mind control efforts at all costs. This is one of the strangest - and most dramatic - dossiers you will likely ever read - the kind that is stamped Top Secret by military authorities because of "national security" and because they know it will have a devastatingly negative effect on society. Many believe that as long as we are in the "Matrix" that we will be unable to avoid their sinister, self-serving mind games. * * * * * * A UFO REVIEW SPECIAL - This is the first in a series of regularly issued publications from the UFO REVIEW, which originated in the early 1970s as the world's only "Official Flying Saucer Newspaper" and which has gone through various incarnations over the decades. Published by Timothy G. Beckley, it is now the solitary "magazine special" printed in English in the U.S. on the subject of unexplainable aerial and paranormal phenomena. Beckley has edited such related newsstand publications as UFO Universe, Unsolved UFO Sightings, and Angels and Aliens, as well as the printed edition of the Conspiracy Journal/Bizarre Bazaar.

Book excerpt: On the morning the radar reported something odd out in space, Lockley awoke at about twenty minutes to eight. That was usual. He'd slept in a sleeping bag on a mountain-flank with other mountains all around. That was not unprecedented. He was there to make a base line measurement for a detailed map of the Boulder Lake National Park, whose facilities were now being built. Measuring a base line, even with the newest of electronic apparatus, was more or less a commonplace job for Lockley. This morning, though, he woke and realized gloomily that he'd dreamed about Jill Holmes again, which was becoming a habit he ought to break. He'd only met her four times and she was going to marry somebody else. He had to stop. He stirred, preparatory to getting up. At the same moment, certain things were happening in places far away from him. As yet, no unusual object in space had been observed. That would come later. But far away up at the Alaskan radar complex a man on duty watch was relieved by another. The relief man took over the monitoring of the giant, football-field-sized radar antenna that recorded its detections on magnetic tape. It happened that on this particular morning only one other radar watched the skies along a long stretch of the Pacific Coast. There was the Alaskan installation, and the other was in Oregon. It was extremely unusual for only those two to be operating. The people who knew about it, or most of them, thought that official orders had somehow gone astray. Where the orders were issued, nothing out of the ordinary appeared. All was normal, for example, in the Military Information Center in Denver. The Survey saw nothing unusual in Lockley's being at his post, and other men at places corresponding to his in the area which was to become Boulder Lake National Park. It also seemed perfectly natural that there should be bulldozer operators, surveyors, steelworkers, concrete men and so on, all comfortably at breakfast in the construction camp for the project. Everything seemed normal everywhere....

Book excerpt: In Recreational Terror, Isabel Cristina Pinedo analyzes how the contemporary horror film produces recreational terror as a pleasurable encounter with violence and danger for female spectators. She challenges the conventional wisdom that violent horror films can only degrade women and incite violence, and contends instead that the contemporary horror film speaks to the cultural need to express rage and terror in the midst of social upheaval.
