Book excerpt: He promises to keep her safe. After barely escaping Earth with her life, Macy seeks refuge on planet New Vaxx, along with her sister Skylar—even though it means they’ll both be expected to mate with Vaxxlian Warriors. Haunted by the past, she fears she’ll never feel ready to take a mate. But when she realizes she’s holding Skylar back from her own happiness, she decides to visit Vaxxlian Matchmakers in secret, where she’s matched to a huge warrior named Dakk. At first, she’s terrified of the scarred warrior, but his warmth eventually starts to win her over. Could she truly find happiness with the big, muscular stranger? Dakk is shocked when he gets a call from Vaxxlian Matchmakers. He never expected to be matched with one of the single human females living on planet New Vaxx—surely no woman could tolerate his scarred face or his unusual eye color, the latter of which marks him as cursed by the Star God. Nevertheless, he shows up to collect his bride, a small female called Macy with soft golden hair he can’t seem to stop stroking. But she trembles at his touch, and he senses her deep fear, making him worry Vaxxlian Matchmakers made a mistake. What if Macy never accepts him fully as her husband? Even worse, will an old enemy endanger their mating union?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early Christians spoke about themselves as resident aliens, strangers, and sojourners, asserting that otherness is a fundamental part of being Christian. But why did they do so and to what ends? How did Christians' claims to foreign status situate them with respect to each other and to the larger Roman world as the new movement grew and struggled to make sense of its own boundaries? Aliens and Sojourners argues that the claim to alien status is not a transparent one. Instead, Benjamin Dunning contends, it shaped a rich, pervasive, variegated discourse of identity in early Christianity. Resident aliens and foreigners had long occupied a conflicted space of both repulsion and desire in ancient thinking. Dunning demonstrates how Christians and others in antiquity capitalized on this tension, refiguring the resident alien as being of a compelling doubleness, simultaneously marginal and potent. Early Christians, he argues, used this refiguration to render Christian identity legible, distinct, and even desirable among the vast range of social and religious identities and practices that proliferated in the ancient Mediterranean. Through close readings of ancient Christian texts such as Hebrews, 1 Peter, the Shepherd of Hermas, and the Epistle to Diognetus, Dunning examines the markedly different ways that Christians used the language of their own marginality, articulating a range of options for what it means to be Christian in relation to the Roman social order. His conclusions have implications not only for the study of late antiquity but also for understanding the rhetorics of religious alienation more broadly, both in the ancient world and today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Katerina Koci charts the development of the promised land motif, starting from its biblical roots and examining its reception over the centuries until the present day. As her cornerstone, Koci uses Hans-Georg Gadamer's claim that there are two complementary paths towards understanding and knowledge: science and art. Thus, to be faithful to the creed of the great hermeneutist, Koci ventures into both topics, arguing that while science sets out historical-critical analysis of the promised land motif in the Hebrew Bible and its later receptions, art enriches the interpretation with its literary illustrations. This volume places particular focus on American contexts, since the concept of the promised land is so deeply intertwined with American religious-political mythologies, and with the art of John Steinbeck and Walter Brueggemann in particular. By discussing artistic interpretation in biblical hermeneutics, the context and reception of Genesis 15.7 and Exodus 3.8 in the Hebrew Bible and New Testament, and the history of the promised land motif and its interpretations, Koci argues that artistic receptions of biblical motifs are crucial for biblical scholarship in opening new hermeneutical and thematical horizons.

Book excerpt: In an age when church growth is centered in Africa, Asia, and Latin America, evangelicalism must adapt to changing demographics or risk becoming irrelevant. Yet many evangelicals behave tribally--valuing the perspective of only those like themselves--while also denying any evidence of racial attitudes in the church. Anthony Bradley has gathered scholars and leaders from diverse "tribes"--Black, Hispanic, and Asian--to share advice on building relationships with minority communities and valuing the perspectives and leadership of minority Christians--not just their token presence. They seek to help evangelicalism more faithfully show the world that the gospel brings together in Christ people from all tribes, languages, and cultures.

Burnt-out Yutaro just wants the vacation he needs. Cushy duty, and a beautiful alien woman as his guide. Heaven. When the anti-matter bomb threatens to destroy the entire planet, Yutaro must learn her crazy-making alien language and -- even more difficult -- to love a woman for herself. In a galaxy full of aliens very -- er -- alien, the Lia fall quite close to humanoid standards. On their planet Yutaro doesn't need a spacesuit. He survives quite easily breathing its air, drinking its water, and eating its food. Even better, Lia women appear quite beautiful, especially to a hardcore alienophile such as Yutaro. He doesn't even need to take special precautions during sexual intercourse. However, the Lia language greatly concerns Yutaro's superiors. Previous explorers, who learn it as a matter of standard procedure, go insane. Therefore, his boss orders him not to learn the language. Fortunately, one alien woman speaks Cyrillish, the galactic lingua franca. A gorgeous guide, Lavita. Yutaro needs and wants nothing else. Until he receives the news via special message. During a test, an anti-matter bomb loses its hyperspace navigational signal. Instead of blowing up a lifeless planet in a remote solar system, it appears close to a planet where lives an intelligent species. It crash-lands in a wildnerness region of that planet. Lia. The missile's force field continues to keep the anti-matter suspended in a perfect vacuum. But nobody knows how much damage the crash caused, so nobody know how long before the force field malfunctions, allowing the anti-matter to touch ordinary matter -- ka boom! No Lia. His agency gives Yutaro the instructions to disarm the missile. But Yutaro must reach it himself. He must travel through a hostile rain forest the Lia themselves avoid. During the storm season. He hires porters who see no reason to risk their lives. Outlaws and powerful predators threaten. And then another human shows up -- a woman. Vardi. Yutaro knows she must represent Earth's empire -- his enemy. But how could she know about the anti-matter bomb? And would she really set it off, dying with tens of millions of Lia, and Yutaro, so his government gets punished for breaking intergalactic treaties? Sworn to silence, Yutaro lies to Lavita, not realizing to Lia, truthful speech equals life itself. To keep her on his side -- to save both their lives and millions of other Lia -- Yutaro promises to learn the Lia language. He tries to grasp the concept of a language where every word functions as a verb. And soon it begins to drive him insane. According to Lavita, it drives him toward sanity -- for the first time in his life. Can he reach and disarm the anti-matter bomb before the missile's physical condition deteriorates, the force field fails, and the anti-matter encounters ordinary matter, and therefore explodes, destroying the entire planet? An interstellar space adventure novel and space alien romance story, Dreamflowering keeps you reading on the edge of your seat. Therefore, scroll up and download Dreamflowering now.
