Especially Alice Glendenning, a South Florida real estate agent who hasn’t managed to sell a single home—or collect any insurance money—after her husband’s fatal boating accident. Her daughter and son’s kidnappers demand $250,000, the exact amount she’s supposed to receive from the insurance company. To complicate matters, her housekeeper has contacted the police—a glaring error in judgment that puts a spotlight on the crime, the children’s lives at risk…and Alice in jeopardy.

Book excerpt: In this innovative book, Stacy Holman Jones presents torch singing as a much more complicated phenomenon than the familiar trope of a woman lamenting her victimhood. With an ethnographer's eye, she observes the bluesy torch singers, asking if they are possibly performing critiques of the very lyrics they sing. From this perspective, we see the singer giving expression not not only to desire but also to an incipient determination to resist and change. Holman Jones also reveals points of contact in the opposition between spectators and performers, emotion and intellect, and love and power. Instead of interpreting the expression of love as a woman's violent mistake—as willing deception and passive fate—Holman Jones allows us to hear an active search for hope.

Book excerpt: A propulsive novel of World War II espionage by the author of New York Times best seller The Glass Room. Barely out of school and doing her bit for the British war effort, Marian Sutro has one quality that makes her stand out—she is a native French speaker. It is this that attracts the attention of the SOE, the Special Operations Executive, which trains agents to operate in occupied Europe. Drawn into this strange, secret world at the age of nineteen, she finds herself undergoing commando training, attending a “school for spies,” and ultimately, one autumn night, parachuting into France from an RAF bomber to join the WORDSMITH resistance network. But there’s more to Marian’s mission than meets the eye of her SOE controllers; her mission has been hijacked by another secret organization that wants her to go to Paris and persuade a friend—a research physicist—to join the Allied war effort. The outcome could affect the whole course of the war. A fascinating blend of fact and fiction, Trapeze is both an old-fashioned adventure story and a modern exploration of a young woman’s growth into adulthood. There is violence, and there is love. There is death and betrayal, deception and revelation. But above all there is Marian Sutro, an ordinary young woman who, like her real-life counterparts in the SOE, did the most extraordinary things at a time when the ordinary was not enough.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A graveyard, fresh dirt, bleak skies--these are the things that Alice is left to fill the void of the passing of her husband, John. Her memories alone of their love that started in a small village in Kerala, India, is not enough to comfort her in the darkness of a cemetery in the United States, so far away from home. Brought overseas by the nursing gap in the 1970s that so desperately left the United States in a health-care crisis, Alice is a displaced nurse who brought her family, including her brother, Jose, with her on this arduous journey. Although Alice's profession is essential to building the economy, she is not met with a welcome committee or happiness on arrival. She suffers through rejection, discrimination, and prejudice at the hands of the men and women who begged for her and others like her to be here. The passion of her brother, Jose, was for writing, and he yearned to go back to his home country with the money needed to kick-start his career. He soon discovers that the American dream is nothing but a mirage--he realizes that the invitation to this monumental country does not come with instructions on how to survive it. As America becomes more polarized, they are forced to lose their dignity, self-worth, culture, and honor to make it day by day in a country whose people see them as a threat. Through the struggle, Jose intensely questions humanity. Will he, his friends, and sister, Alice, succumb to the unintended role they play as Atlas in carrying the burdens of the exotics that are now trapped here?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is within all theological utterances something of the ridiculous, perhaps more so in Christianity, given its proclivity for the paradoxical and the childlike. Yet, few theologians are willing to discuss that consent to the Christian doctrine often requires a faith that goes beyond reason or does not exclusively identify with it. There seems to be a fear that the association of theology with the absurd will give fuel to the skeptic's refrain: "you can't seriously believe in all that nonsense." This book considers the legitimacy of the skeptic's objection and rather than trying to explain away points of logical contradiction, the author explores the possibility that an idea can be contrary to rationality and also true and meaningful. The study involves the systematic analysis of central stylistic features of literary nonsense using Lewis Carroll's famous Alice stories as exemplar. The project culminates in the setting up of a nonsense theology by considering the practical and evangelical ramifications of associating Christian faith with nonsense literature; and conversely, the value of relating theological principles to the study of literary nonsense. Ultimately, the research suggests that faith is always a risk and that a strictly rational apologetic misrepresents the nature of Christian truth.

Book excerpt: A culinary history of the seven food staples that have shaped human history, including 63 original recipes The Seven Culinary Wonders of the World is a global culinary history told through the stories of seven essential ingredients found in cuisines all over the world: honey, salt, chile, pork, rice, cacao, and tomato. Each of these foundational ingredients has played a long and valuable role in human foodways and culture, and each has its own fascinating history. This engagingly illustrated book traces the journeys of these foodstuffs as they were transported from their regions of origin to faraway cultures and countries, there to take up starring roles in new cuisines. The Seven Culinary Wonders of the World explores each food in depth, beautifully illustrated by specially commissioned artworks, and views them through a number of prisms--social, cultural, historical, and botanical--to offer readers fresh, informative insights into seemingly everyday foods that reveal themselves as wondrous. The rich and diverse cultural stories of these seven ingredients are also told, from the magical and aphrodisiac powers associated with cacao in Mesoamerican culture to the introduction of tomatoes to Europe by the Spanish conquistadors in the sixteenth century and the earliest cultivation of rice in China's Pearl Valley. Readers can take the seven ingredients into their own kitchens via 63 original recipes for dishes both traditional and innovative.
