Book excerpt: Corporations, business groups and other business organizations are increasingly concerned about social challenges that directly impact the future of capitalism. Colombia s Fundación Social (FS) a century-old Latin American business group has from its start operated under two different but closely intertwined rationales: as a market, profit-seeking player; and as a civil society organization practicing solidarity. Social aims are at the core of FS mission, and business firms are instrumental. Remarkably, despite decades of growth as a ranking business group, FS underlying objective remained grounded in concern for the poor: To fight the structural causes of poverty.

How can Christians be active business practitioners while remaining faithful to their religious convictions? What does it mean for Christians to do business in a context plagued with corruption? While the sometimes tense interaction between the church and business can be documented in multiple locations, the author's own experience of this dynamic comes from the context of the Mennonite churches in Paraguay. Though his treatment of the church and business arises primarily from this particular context, the issues addressed are relevant for a variety of circumstances.

Book excerpt: This volume surveys the interplay between state and non-state actors in Latin American foreign policies and attitudes towards the Middle East in the twenty-first century. How will domestic instability and international tensions affect the choices and behavior of Latin American countries towards the Arab world? The chapters here offer insight into this and similar questions, as well as a comparative value in analyzing countries beyond those specifically discussed. Common topics in policy making are considered–namely, Israel and Palestine, Iran, the Gulf countries, and the Arab "Spring”–as authors from distinct disciplines examine the crucial relation between ends and means on the one hand, and foreign policy actions and context on the other.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Class Struggle in Latin America: Making History Today analyses the political and economic dynamics of development in Latin America through the lens of class struggle. Focusing in particular on Peru, Paraguay, Chile, Colombia, Argentina, Brazil and Venezuela, the book identifies how the shifts and changing dynamics of the class struggle have impacted on the rise, demise and resurgence of neo-liberal regimes in Latin America. This innovative book offers a unique perspective on the evolving dynamics of class struggle, engaging both the destructive forces of capitalist development and those seeking to consolidate the system and preserve the status quo, alongside the efforts of popular resistance concerned with the destructive ravages of capitalism on humankind, society and the global environment. Using theoretical observations based on empirical and historical case studies, this book argues that the class struggle remains intrinsically linked to the march of capitalist development. At a time when post-neo-liberal regimes in Latin America are faltering, this supplementary text provides a guide to the economic and political dynamics of capitalist development in the region, which will be invaluable to students and researchers of international development, anthropology and sociology, as well as those with an interest in Latin American politics and development.
