This book was released on 2009 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reliable information on how health service strategies affect the poor is in short supply. In an attempt to redress the imbalance, 'Improving Health Service Delivery in Developing Countries' presents evidence on strategies for strengthening health service delivery, based on systematic reviews of the literature, quantitative and qualitative analyses of existing data, and seven country case studies. The authors also explore how changes in coverage of different health services affect each other on the national level. Finally, the authors explain why setting international targets for health services has been not been successful and offer an alternative approach based on a specific country's experience. The book's findings are clear and hopeful: There are many ways to improve health services. Measuring change and using information to guide decisions and inform stakeholders are critically important for successful implementation. Asking difficult questions, using information intelligently, and involving key stakeholders and institutions are central to the "learning and doing" practices that underlie successful health service delivery.

Book excerpt: From the bestselling author of Happiness and co-editor of the annual World Happiness Report Most people now realize that economic growth, however desirable, will not solve all our problems. Instead, we need a philosophy and a science which encompasses a much fuller range of human need and experience. This book argues that the goal for a society must be the greatest possible all-round happiness, and shows how each of us can become more effective creators of happiness, both as citizens and in our own organizations. Written with Richard Layard's characteristic clarity, it provides hard evidence that increasing happiness is the right aim, and that it can be achieved. Its language is simple, its evidence impressive, its effect inspiring. 'In this book 'Can We Be Happier?' which is part of Richard Layard's excellent, ongoing exploration of what happiness is and how it can be achieved, he provides evidence that if you have peace of mind and are full of joy, your health will be good, your family will be happy and that happiness will affect the atmosphere of the community in which you live.' Book excerpt: Artificial Intelligence Medicine: Technical Basis and Clinical Applications presents a comprehensive overview of the field, ranging from its history and technical foundations, to specific clinical applications and finally to prospects. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is expanding across all domains at a breakneck speed. Medicine, with the availability of large multidimensional datasets, lends itself to strong potential advancement with the appropriate harnessing of AI. The integration of AI can occur throughout the continuum of medicine: from basic laboratory discovery to clinical application and healthcare delivery. Integrating AI within medicine has been met with both excitement and scepticism. By understanding how AI works, and developing an appreciation for both limitations and strengths, clinicians can harness its computational power to streamline workflow and improve patient care. It also provides the opportunity to improve upon research methodologies beyond what is currently available using traditional statistical approaches. On the other hand, computers scientists and data analysts can provide solutions, but often lack easy access to clinical insight that may help focus their efforts. This book provides vital background knowledge to help bring these two groups together, and to engage in more streamlined dialogue to yield productive collaborative solutions in the field of medicine. - Provides history and overview of artificial intelligence, as narrated by pioneers in the field - Discusses broad and deep background and updates on recent advances in both medicine and artificial intelligence that enabled the application of artificial intelligence - Addresses the ever-expanding application of this novel technology and discusses some of the unique challenges associated with such an approach

It is the key book recommended by most alcohol counselling courses in the UK, including the Scottish national alcohol counsellors training scheme. The author provides clear guidance for counsellors and demonstrates the need to treat every client as an individual, attempting to understand and therefore enable the client to understand, what they are doing and why. This new edition includes: - New content on the current political, social and counselling context surrounding alcohol use - A wider range of case-studies - New ideas that help students and trainees develop the skills and strategies they need for working with their clients - Further guidance for generic or non-alcohol counsellors who face alcohol problems with their clients. This third edition is an invaluable resource for practitioners, both those specialising in work with alcohol misusers and those who encounter problem drinkers in the context of a more general counselling practice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume, prominent anthropologists, public health physicians, and psychiatrists respond sympathetically but critically to the Movement for Global Mental Health (MGMH), which seeks to export psychiatry throughout the world. They question some of its fundamental assumptions: the idea that "mental disorders" can clearly be identified; that they are primarily of biological origin; that the world is currently facing an "epidemic" of them; that the most appropriate treatments for them normally involve psycho-pharmaceutical drugs; and that local or indigenous therapies are of little interest or importance for treating them. Instead, the contributors argue that labeling mental suffering as "illness" or "disorder" is often highly problematic; that the countries of South and Southeast Asia have abundant, though non- psychiatric, resources for dealing with it; that its causes are often social and biographical; and that many non-pharmacological therapies are effective for dealing with it. In short, they advocate a thoroughgoing mental health pluralism.
