Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Algorithm engineering allows computer engineers to produce a computational machine that will execute an algorithm as efficiently and cost-effectively as possible given a set of constraints, such as minimal performance or the availability of technology. Addressing algorithm engineering in a parallel setting, regular array syntheses offer powerful computation and embody best practice, but often face the criticism that they are applicable only to restricted classes of algorithms. Algorithm Engineering for Integral and Dynamic Problems reviews the basic principles of regular array synthesis and shows how to extend its use into classes of algorithms traditionally viewed to be beyond its domain of application. The author discusses the transformation of the initial algorithm specification into a specification with data dependencies of increased regularity in order to obtain corresponding regular arrays by direct application of the standard mapping techniques. The book includes a review of the basic principles of regular array synthesis followed by applications of these techniques to well-known algorithms, concluding with numerous case studies to illustrate the methods. Researchers and practitioners in algorithm engineering will find that this text significantly extends their understanding of the applications of regular array synthesis and regular array processors beyond the traditionally narrow field of relevance.

Book excerpt: Based on the results of over 10 years of research and development by the authors, this book presents a broad cross section of dynamic programming (DP) techniques applied to the optimization of dynamical systems. The main goal of the research effort was to develop a robust path planning/trajectory optimization tool that did not require an initial guess. The goal was partially met with a combination of DP and homotopy algorithms. DP algorithms are presented here with a theoretical development, and their successful application to variety of practical engineering problems is emphasized.

Book excerpt: This book aims to systematically review and design different intelligent control algorithms for the small-signal stability assessment of HPS. With the growing consciousness of global warming and the fast depletion of natural power generation resources, the existing power system is on the verge of transitions to a “hybrid power system (HPS)” integrated with distributed energy resources. The recent results and requirements for the developments of intelligent control algorithms have motivated the authors to introduce this book for extensively analyzing the performance of HPS against unknown/uncertain disturbances. This book introduces fractional-order resilient control methodologies for arresting small-signal instability of HPS. The prospective investigation has been performed on the MATLAB platform. This book is helpful for undergraduate, postgraduate students, and research scholars working in power system stability, control applications, and soft computing in particular.

Book excerpt: Computational techniques for the analysis and design of structural dynamic systems using numerical methods have been the focus of an enormous amount of research for several decades. In general, the numerical methods utilized to solve these problems include two phases: (a) spatial discretization by either the finite element method (FEM) or the finite difference method (FDM), and (b) solution of systems of time dependent second-order ordinary differential equations. In addition, the significantly powerful advances in computer systems capabilities have put on the desks of structural systems designers enormous computing power either by means of increasingly effective computer workstations or else through PCs (personal computers), whose increasing power has succeeded in marginalizing the computational power differences between PCs and workstations in many cases. This volume is a comprehensive treatment of the issues involved in computational techniques in structural dynamic systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Symmetric multiprocessors (SMPs) dominate the high-end server market and are currently the primary candidate for constructing large scale multiprocessor systems. Yet, the design of e cient parallel algorithms for this platform c- rently poses several challenges. The reason for this is that the rapid progress in microprocessor speed has left main memory access as the primary limitation to SMP performance. Since memory is the bottleneck, simply increasing the n- ber of processors will not necessarily yield better performance. Indeed, memory bus limitations typically limit the size of SMPs to 16 processors. This has at least twoimplicationsfor the algorithmdesigner. First, since there are relatively few processors availableon an SMP, any parallel algorithm must be competitive with its sequential counterpart with as little as one processor in order to be r- evant. Second, for the parallel algorithm to scale with the number of processors, it must be designed with careful attention to minimizing the number and type of main memory accesses. In this paper, we present a computational model for designing e cient al- rithms for symmetric multiprocessors. We then use this model to create e cient solutions to two widely di erent types of problems - linked list pre x com- tations and generalized sorting. Both problems are memory intensive, but in die rent ways. Whereas generalized sorting algorithms typically require a large numberofmemoryaccesses, they areusuallytocontiguousmemorylocations. By contrast, prex computation algorithms typically require a more modest qu- tity of memory accesses, but they are are usually to non-contiguous memory locations.
