Book excerpt: Excerpt from Myxophyceae, Pedinieae, Bacillarieae, Chlorophyceae, Together With a Brief Summary of the Occurrence and Distribution of Freshwater Algae, Vol. 1 The rapid development of certain branches of botanical science in recent years has emphasised the need of books by specialists on different groups of the vegetable kingdom. After acquiring a superficial knowledge of the larger groups, the student who desires to pursue the subject beyond the limits of a general text-book receives but little assistance from existing treatises, at least as regards recent researches into the morphology and natural history of plants. The enormous output of original papers renders the task of keeping abreast of current work increasingly difficult: the accumulation of facts necessitates a periodic review from a broad standpoint of the results of recent work, more especially as they affect the actual problems of evolution presented by the various classes of plants. It is with a view of meeting this want that the present series is designed. Professor West's book dealing with certain groups of Algae is the first of the Handbooks to appear. The Volumes on Lichens, Fungi, and Gnetales by Miss Lorrain Smith, Dr Helen Gwynne-Vaughan, and Professor Pearson respectively are in an advanced state of preparation. Book Synopsis Evolutionary Pathways and Enigmatic Algae by : Joseph Seckbach
Download or read book Evolutionary Pathways and Enigmatic Algae written by Joseph Seckbach and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the first time a book is available devoted to cellular evolution and to the biology of Cyanidium and other enigmatic cells. Twenty international experts present their views and reviews, postulating new theories on compartmental (direct filiation) eukaryogenesis, discussing the endosymbiotic hypothesis, and providing conceptions on molecular RNA and protein sequences of genes for phylogenetic applications. The book contains exclusive reports on additional species (newly discovered) of the Cyanidium group. Special attention is given to the red algae and other enigmatic/unicellular algae including Nanochlorum eucaryotum (a green alga with minimal eukaryotic characteristics). The mystifying taxon of Glaucocystophyta (containing Cyanophora paradoxa -- the endosymbiotic `guinea pig' with cyanelles/host special relationships) is examined. For biologists, post/graduate students in biology, and anyone seriously interested in algae, evolution, cytology, biochemistry and questions of nucleated cell differentiation or cellular endosymbiosis.
Download or read book Algæ written by G. S. West and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George Stephen West (1876-1919) was a prominent British botanist specialising in freshwater algae. In 1906 he became a lecturer in botany at the University of Birmingham and was later appointed the Mason Professor of Botany. This volume was first published in 1916 as the first of the Cambridge Botanical Handbooks series and provides a description of both marine and freshwater algae in the Myxophyceae, Peridinieae, Bacillarieae and Chlorophyceae classes. West describes the habitat, biological conditions, distribution, internal and external structures and life history of these algae in great detail, with a bibliography concluding each chapter. The book provided the first detailed description of the Myxophyceae (or blue-green) class of algae, and provides an insight into knowledge and classification of algae at the time of publication. A second volume containing a full taxonomic account of freshwater algae was planned, but not published owing to the author's death in 1919.

Book Synopsis Dinoflagellates by : David L. Spector
Download or read book Dinoflagellates written by David L. Spector and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book begins with a general introduction and a taxonomic description of the dinoflagellates both to acquaint those unfamiliar with this group of organisms and to set the tone for the rest of the volume. It then addresses the following topics: cell biology (cell cortex, nuclear structure, cell cycle and mitosis, sexual reproduction, cysts and unusual inclusions); biochemistry (physiology and biochemistry, blooms and toxins, and biorhythms); and genetics. In addition, a comprehensive chapter on cell culturing provides the reader with an understanding of the growth conditions and requirements of various dinoflagellates and a simple to follow listing of culture media, all expressed in similar units for ease of comparison. The volume closes with a chapter on evolution which evaluates many of the features of dinoflagellates discussed in the text in terms of evolutionary significance. We hope that this treatise will be of use to research workers and students in the area of dinoflagellate biology and in other areas of biology in which dinoflagellates may be used as a model system for studying various biological problems.
