Book excerpt: The partnership between Alfa Romeo and Nissan, called ARNA, was signed by the presidents of the respective brands, Takashi Ishihara and Ettore Massacesi, on October 9th, 1980, and was a first in continental Europe: the joint venture, as we would say nowadays, would guarantee 3,500 workplaces and a development-manufacturing merging, even if limited to just one model. Pity that, in Italy, the entire operation was truly mismanaged. Motor industry commentators often cite the Alfa Romeo Arna as a perfect example of how not to combine the talents of two manufacturers. The world sat up and took notice when Alfa Romeo announced its forthcoming partnership with Nissan in October 1980 - the combination of the two had the potential to build something special. By 1986, Alfa Romeo's parent company, the Italian government-owned Istituto per la Ricostruzione Industriale was suffering from heavy losses, and IRI president Romano Prodi put Alfa Romeo up for sale, with Fiat ultimately emerging as the new owner of Alfa. Fiat's first decision was to cease Arna production owing to its poor reputation and poor sales and to terminate the unsuccessful Alfa Romeo Nissan alliance. Production ceased in 1987, with Fiat intending to strengthen the competitiveness of the Alfa Romeo 33 as Alfa's entry in that segment. By this time, Nissan had set up a European operation of its own at Nissan Motor Manufacturing UK in Sunderland, which became hugely successful.

A go-to for any Alfa enthusiast, the Arna is an exotic vehicle with very little writing about it. As Arna is often derided as a mistake or even a 'joke' in Alfa Romeo's illustrious history, the book is well researched and written to answer the questions: why the Arna project was born, it is 'Alfasud' and why produce it with the 'new' Alfa 33 then.

Book excerpt: Launched in 1971, the Alfasud was an all-new departure for Alfa Romeo, both in its design and its execution and became the best-selling model in the history of Alfa Romeo . Originally it was developed with the dual intentions of launching the company into large volume production and providing a more affordable model than their highly regarded sports cars. However, its story was far from straightforward. Although respected for its technically brilliant design and universally praised for its ride and handling, the model never quite reached its full sales potential and its reputation was marred by problems that could not have been foreseen. With over 240 colour photographs, the book includes a brief history of Alfa Romeo to the end of the 1960s. The development of the Alfasud's design and the political reasons for building a new factory are given along with the car's reception from both the press and owners. The evolution of the model from initial prototypes, to the improvements to build quality and performance, including the Giardinetta and Sprint variations are covered as well as Alfasuds in competition. The political and labour problems, as well as the early quality control issues are discussed. Finally, there are numerous specification tables, performance data, chassis numbers, engine codes and colour charts.

Book excerpt: On June 24, 1910, a group of businessmen, headed by Italian aristocrat Ugo Stella, took over the Italian plant of the French car company Societa Italiana Automobili Darracq located in Portello, Italy, just outside Milan. Stella renamed the company Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili, or ALFA. From this day forward, a new class of cars was being produced. Over the years, Alfa Romeo has produced airplane engines, race cars, and family vehicles. This book explores the rich history of these iconic automobiles and how they have impacted the automobile industry.

Book excerpt: There is something special about Alfa Romeo cars which can’t be defined precisely but is, perhaps, best described as a vitality that creates a symbiosis between driver and machine: a oneness that no other marque seems to replicate. Alfa’s Berlinas have always tended to be overshadowed by their spotlight-grabbing Coupé and Spider siblings, but enthusiasts with family car needs have always known that any saloon/sedan with the famous Alfa Romeo badge would deliver pure driving pleasure in equal measure. Here is the full story of Alfa’s quirky but characterful Berlinas, from their beginnings in the early 1900s through to the start of a new millennium. Not only does the book describe and picture every model, it also contains useful information on restoring classic Alfa Romeos and details of marque specialists.

They are also immensely powerful and useful tools in the hands of responsible investors - and key to defending money from volatility and the unexpected. In this accessible and entertaining book, veteran fund manager Stewart Cowley explains with his trademark wit and clarity: - what derivatives are - how you can alter the characteristics of a portfolio using derivatives - how you can protect a portfolio using derivatives - how you can increase the returns to a portfolio using derivatives. Supported by simple spreadsheet examples and illustrations, Derivatives in a Day is perfect for anyone who wants to quickly get a practical grasp of this important financial market.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Japanese manufacturing investment in the European Community has grown dramatically over the last twenty years. At first, instances of investment were few, concentrated in a small number of industrial sectors. But since the mid-1980's there has been a surge of investment in a much wider range of industries. This volume details the growth of Japanese manufacturing investment in Europe in fourteen industrial sectors. The impact of Japanese competition and direct investment on European industries is considered in the context of the emergence of the three major trading blocs: the United States, Japan and the EC. Roger Strange concludes by making important policy recommendations, and arguing for the need for a new theoretical framework for assessing the political economy of foreign direct investment.
