Even so, many of us believe that propaganda and manipulation aren't problems for us—not in the way they were for the totalitarian societies of the mid-twentieth century. In How Propaganda Works, Jason Stanley demonstrates that more attention needs to be paid. He examines how propaganda operates subtly, how it undermines democracy—particularly the ideals of democratic deliberation and equality—and how it has damaged democracies of the past. Focusing on the shortcomings of liberal democratic states, Stanley provides a historically grounded introduction to democratic political theory as a window into the misuse of democratic vocabulary for propaganda's selfish purposes. He lays out historical examples, such as the restructuring of the US public school system at the turn of the twentieth century, to explore how the language of democracy is sometimes used to mask an undemocratic reality. Book excerpt: Focusing on a turbulent time in the history of the Roman Catholic Church, The Power and the Glorification considers how, in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, the papacy employed the visual arts to help reinforce Catholic power structures. All means of propaganda were deployed to counter the papacy’s eroding authority in the wake of the Great Schism of 1378 and in response to the upheaval surrounding the Protestant Reformation a century later. In the Vatican and elsewhere in Rome, extensive decorative cycles were commissioned to represent the strength of the church and historical justifications for its supreme authority. Replicating the contemporary viewer’s experience is central to De Jong’s approach, and he encourages readers to consider the works through fifteenth- and sixteenth-century eyes. De Jong argues that most visitors would only have had a limited knowledge of the historical events represented in these works, and they would likely have accepted (or been intended to accept) what they saw at face value. Book excerpt: Formed in 1937 in the wake ot the Arab revolt, the Irgun Zvai Leumi continued to struggle for the existence of an independent Jewish nation in Palestine until the ceration of the state of Israel in May of 1948. In the face of British opposition and Arab hotility, the Irgun carried on its fight by means of both violence and psychological warfar. In this, it was typical of those underground groups that seek to bring about political change outside constitutional channels by combining the propaganda of the word with the propaganda of the deed. Concentrating on the period 1942-48, the editors demonstrate the methods used by the Irgun to undermine British morale and to qustion the continued legitimacy of the British mandate in Palestine. They also illustrated the tensions among, and the conflicting policies of, the major Jewish underground groups. In so doing, they provide a case study of the methods of political communication by wich a nonstate group can achieve its goals, even whwn opposed by an established government. These documents also will provide insight into the current problems in the Middle East.
