Several years after the untimely death of Mr. Wilson Gregg, which occurred in 1899, the manuscript was placed in the hands of the present writer for revision and completion and for publication. This was somewhat delayed by the death of Mrs. Wilmerding, who was chiefly interested in the publication; and while the book was passing through the press, Mr. David Gregg, of Luling, Texas, who was also much interested in the publicaton of his brothers tribute to his father's memory, passed away. Charles Gillette In giving the following pages to the public, it may be proper to state that I am influenced by two motives: a defence of my own rights, and the rights of Presbyters and Deacons, and a defence of the Church against the usurpations of one of her highest ministers. I conceive that in the following discussion very grave principles, involving the liberty of conscience, and the freedom of Presbyters and Deacons to exercise it, and also the usages and teachings of the Church in this particular, are specially trenched upon by the Bishop. It is with a view of bringing this matter before the Church at large, that, if possible, the question may be settled by such alterations of the law as may make the duty of each order of the ministry plain, that I make the following correspondence public. If a Bishop has a right to introduce prayers into the service of the Church on all occasions of public worship, and keep them there for years, then the Constitution and Canons of the Church need revising, so as to state the fact; and if a Bishop has a right to introduce a mere political opinion into a prayer, by way of simple assertion, by authority of the Church, and to exclude from the exercise of their office all his clergy who do not agree with him, and cannot make the assertion with a good conscience, then the Church herself needs reform. Book excerpt: While slavery and secession divided the Union during the American Civil War, they also severed the Northern and Southern dioceses of the Protestant Episcopal Church. In Challenges on the Emmaus Road, T. Felder Dorn focuses on the way Northern and Southern Episcopal bishops confronted and responded to the issues and events of their turbulent times. Prior to the Civil War, Southern bishops were industrious in evangelizing among enslaved African Americans, but at the same time they supported the legal and social aspects of the "peculiar institution." Southern and Northern bishops parted company over the institution of slavery, not over the place of blacks in the Episcopal Church. As Southern states left the Union, Southern dioceses separated from the Episcopal Church in the United States. The book's title was inspired by the Gospel of Luke 24:13-35 in which the resurrected Jesus Christ walked unrecognized with his disciples and discussed the events of his own crucifixion and disappearance from his tomb. Dorn perceives that scriptural episode as a metaphor for the responses of Episcopal bishops to the events of the Civil War era. Dorn carefully summarizes the debates within the church and in secular society surrounding the important topics of the era. In doing so, he lays the groundwork for his own interpretations of church history and also provides authentic data for other church scholars to investigate such topics as faith and doctrine, evangelism, and the administrative history of one of the most important institutions in America. Dorn devotes the final chapters to the postwar reunification of the Episcopal Church and Southern bishops' involvement in establishing the Commission on Freedmen to offer help with the educational and spiritual needs of the recently emancipated slaves.
