The utopia-motif has been a very creative one in doing so, constantly inspiring authors to pursuit the goal of imagining a perfect world. The motif is also productive in a sense of redevelopment, since it serves to lay out the points of criticism that occur when looking at the “real” world at times. These approaches have resulted in the formation of new motifs such as dystopia. Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World is an ambiguous masterpiece that allows the reader to reveal various levels of meaning. Researchers mainly suggest it to be read as a satire, but it is also considered to be a key work of dystopian literature. This paper points out the elements that allow us to identify Brave New World as both a utopian and dystopian narrative. It concentrates on the points of view because in my opinion they determine the motif. The thesis is that depending on the viewpoint of the different characters the two worlds Huxley presents us can be either interpreted as a utopia or dystopia. The paper aims to introduce the major terms Utopia and Dystopia, but also outline the two different worlds Huxley describes in his novel. It explores whether or not the thesis is applicable and verifiable.

Dieses Buch stellt zwei Utopien aus dem letzten Jahrhundert vor: Moving the Mountain von Charlotte Gilman und Eiland von Aldous Huxley. Beide sind trotz ihres Alters hochaktuell und können uns heutigen viele Anregungen geben für unsere Suche nach dem guten Leben. Sowohl Gilman als auch Huxley fanden im Laufe ihrer Karrieren zum Mittel der positiven Utopie, um ihren Mitmenschen zu zeigen, dass die bestehende Form von Gesellschaft zerstörerisch und eine andere Art zu leben möglich ist. Fortschritt und Konsum-Zentriertheit verstellten damals (wie heute) den meisten Menschen den Blick auf mögliche Veränderungen, ließen sie den je bestehenden Zustand als die beste aller möglichen Welten sehen. Und doch blieben diese Gesellschaften weit hinter ihren Möglichkeiten zurück, waren in vielen Bereichen ungerecht und boten kein gutes Leben. Gilman zeigte auf, dass der Einfluss und die Mitarbeit von Frauen fehlte, um eine Gesellschaft der Menschlichkeit zu verwirklichen. Huxley betonte einen weiteren Aspekt von Humanität: die Ganzheitliche Entwicklung des Menschen, die auch den spirituellen Bereich und die Naturnähe umfasst. Er stimmte mit Gilman in vielen Punkten überein, die eine gute Gesellschaft ausmachen: der hohe Stellenwert von Bildung, die Schädlichkeit des Militärs, die Notwendigkeit der Bewahrung der Natur und anderes mehr. Auf der Ebene des Individuums aber setzten die beiden unterschiedliche Schwerpunkte: sie die Emanzipation der Frauen von einer Männer-dominierten Machtpolitik, er die Emanzipation der spirituellen Entwicklung von der Dominanz autoritärer christlicher Religion. Beide waren sich wiederum einig, dass der (utopische) Weg zu einer wirklich humanen Gesellschaft führen müsse. Dieses Buch führt beide Utopien zusammen, weil sie jeweils im anderen eine gute Ergänzung finden und eine gemeinsame Sehnsucht nach Veränderung ausdrücken, die auch uns anregen kann, die Suche nach einem guten Leben wiederaufzunehmen.

The emphasis in Island lies in the long conversations that Will leads in which he learns about the Palanese lifestyle and through which we, the readers, get to know about Huxley’s ideas of an ideal society. The questions this research paper deals with are: What exactly are the utopian features in Island? Are those features attainable and what is more, are they worth to attain at all? And in this context, is Island rather a utopia of escape or reconstruction? In order to find out the answers to these questions, the paper will first offer an analysis of the ideas and then it will turn to the ‘novel’-part with an analysis of the main plot.

The outlook is optimistic, the tone playfully rational, the intent clear - allow science a free hand and through rational planning it could bring order out of the surrounding social chaos. He complained, however: At the moment, science is for most part either an intellectual luxury or the paid servant of capitalist industry or the nationalist state. When it and its results cannot be fitted into the existing framework, it and they are ignored; and furthermore the structure of scientific research is grossly lopsided, with over-emphasis on some kinds of science and partial or entire neglect of others. (pp. 83-84) All this the scientist dictator would set right. A new era of scientific human ism would provide alternative visions to the traditional religions with their Gods and the civic religions such as Nazism and fascism. Science in Huxley's version carries in it the twin impulses of the utopian imagination - Power and Order. Of course, it was exactly this vision of science which led that other grand son of Thomas Henry Huxley, the writer Aldous Huxley, to portray scientific discovery as potentially subversive and scientific practice as ultimately en slaving.

In the utopian alternative, the sex-gender system of the contemporary society may be either reproduced or radically re-organised. Reading utopian writing as a dialogue between reality and possibility, this study examines the relationship between historical sex-gender systems and those envisioned by utopian texts. Surveying a broad range of utopian writing from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, including Huxley, Zamyatin, Wedekind, Hauptmann, and Charlotte Perkins Gilman, this book reveals the variety and complexity of approaches to re-arranging gender, and locates these 're-arrangements' within contemporary debates on sex and reproduction, masculinity and femininity, desire, taboo and family structure. These issues occupy a position of central importance in the dialogue between utopian imagination and anti-utopian thought which culminates in the great dystopias of the twentieth century and the postmodern re-invention of utopia.
