Book Synopsis Drinking and Sobriety Among the Lakota Sioux by : Beatrice Medicine
Download or read book Drinking and Sobriety Among the Lakota Sioux written by Beatrice Medicine and published by Rowman Altamira. This book was released on 2007 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whereprevious studies have focused primarily upon drinking styles among Indian populations, Beatrice Medicine develops an indigenous model for the analysis and control of alcohol abuse. This new ethnography of the Lakota (Standing Rock in North and South Dakota) examines patterns of alcohol consumption and strategies by individuals to attain a new life-style and achieve sobriety. Medicine describes the ineffectiveness of treatments when researchers, policy makers, and health professionals do not use a tribal-specific approach to addiction. She offers an indigenous perspective and understanding that should lead to improved approaches to treatment in mental health and alcohol abuse. Her book is essential for medical anthropologists, Native American studies researchers, and health professionals concerned with Native American health issues and alcohol abuse.

One Book One Tribe Book Award, First Nations Development Institute, 2020. Finalist, Stubbendieck Great Plains Distinguished Book Prize, 2019. Shortlist, Brooklyn Public Library Literary Prize, 2019. Our History Is the Future is at once a work of history, a personal story, and a manifesto. Now available in paperback on the fifth anniversary of its original publication, Our History Is the Future features a new afterword by Nick Estes about the rising indigenous campaigns to protect our environment from extractive industries and to shape new ways of relating to one another and the world. In this award-winning book, Estes traces traditions of Indigenous resistance leading to the present campaigns against fossil fuel pipelines, such as the Dakota Access Pipeline Protests, from the days of the Missouri River trading forts through the Indian Wars, the Pick-Sloan dams, the American Indian Movement, and the campaign for Indigenous rights at the United Nations. In 2016, a small protest encampment at the Standing Rock reservation in North Dakota, initially established to block construction of the Dakota Access oil pipeline, grew to be the largest Indigenous protest movement in the twenty-first century, attracting tens of thousands of Indigenous and non-Native allies from around the world. Its slogan “Mni Wiconi”—Water Is Life—was about more than just a pipeline. Water Protectors knew this battle for Native sovereignty had already been fought many times before, and that, even with the encampment gone, their anti-colonial struggle would continue. While a historian by trade, Estes draws on observations from the encampments and from growing up as a citizen of the Oceti Sakowin (the Nation of the Seven Council Fires) and his own family’s rich history of struggle.
Book Synopsis Standing Rock Sioux by : Donovin Arleigh Sprague
Download or read book Standing Rock Sioux written by Donovin Arleigh Sprague and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2004 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a rock of incredible legend and history that stands before the Standing Rock Agency. Years ago a Dakota man took a second wife, thereby bruising the ego of his first. As camp was breaking up and the tribe was moving on, the first wife pouted and refused to move. She stayed behind with her baby. The tribe moved on and the husband repented, sending his brothers to collect her. They returned to camp to find that she and her child had turned to stone. From that point on, the stone was thought holy and was moved with the tribe, always given a place of honor at the center of camp. Now resting upon a brick pedestal, from this stone the agency derives its name.

Download or read book Alcoholism And The Family written by Saturo Saitoh and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-05-24 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The science of the etiology and treatment of alcohol has made notable progress in recent years. Since the early 1970s there have been growing in-roads made concerning the relevance of hereditary factors in alcoholism. This has led to the presentation of various innovative hypotheses in this field. In conjunction with this there has been much discussion and study of the "alcoholic personality" and its possible characteristics. These may be considered the "longitudinal aspects" linked to the transmission of alcoholism.

Book Synopsis Research Advances in Alcohol and Drug Problems by : Reginald Smart
Download or read book Research Advances in Alcohol and Drug Problems written by Reginald Smart and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-22 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book continues the series of reviews of research advances first published in 1974. The editors' aim here is to present critical and integrative reviews by internationally recognized scholars of areas in which there has been much recent research. In this task we have been greatly helped by the staff of Plenum Press and the Advisory Panel listed at the front of this volume. Several members of the Panel have retired: Dr. W.M.D. Paton, Dr. K. Bruun, Dr. K.F. Killam, and Dr. J .R. Seeley. Dr. Klaus Makela has accepted our invitation to join the Panel. Unfortunately, one member of the Panel, Professor William McGlothlin, died as a result of a tragic accident. He was a gifted and sensitive researcher. His work over many years was well known to those studying alcohol and drug problems. We want to acknowledge his contributions to the Research Advances Series and to the field in general. The editors wish to acknowledge the help of Julliana Newell Ayoub in preparation of this volume. This volume contains three papers by H. Fingarette, R. Room, and B. Kissin, on "The Disease Concept." They were originally prepared for an earlier volume but could not be included because of scheduling problems. The editors, and not the authors, are responsible for this delay. Because they are primarily philosophical and theoretical in nature they are not diminished in value by the lesser number of references to recent research.
