Book excerpt: Renowned channeler Paul Selig shares the wisdom of The Guides "The gift of the times you sit in, humanity at a crossroads, is the gift of the unknown, the unseen, the unprepared for. “How can I prepare for a future, when all I have trusted and believed in seems to be falling away?”...You say yes to the uncertain moment. You agree that the path before you will be lit as you walk it, and not a moment before. " In Alchemy: A Channeled Text, The Guides offer us a way to engage the transformational process of moving beyond a limited interpretation of the self and into a place of true manifestation. As humanity stands at a crossroads, the voices of The Guides offer insight and a path forward. Paul Selig, the author of Beyond the Known: Realization, is one of the foremost spiritual channels in the world. Alchemy is composed of the pure, unedited words of The Guides as they have been channeled through Paul. Their message is poignant and beautifully written, humming with wisdom and insight for all who are ready and willing to receive their words.

It encompassed a range of practices and beliefs that sought to transform and manipulate matter, particularly in the pursuit of turning base metals into noble metals like gold and silver. However, alchemy was not solely concerned with metallurgy; it also encompassed elements of philosophy, medicine, and spiritual pursuits. During the medieval period, alchemy was deeply rooted in both Greek and Arabic traditions. Greek philosophers such as Aristotle and the Hellenistic alchemist Zosimos of Panopolis influenced early alchemical theories, while Islamic scholars made significant contributions to the field through their translations and commentaries on ancient Greek texts. Alchemy was seen as a secretive and mystical practice, and alchemists often used symbolic language and allegories to convey their knowledge. They believed in the concept of transmutation, which involved the transformation of substances from one form to another. This idea was not limited to metals; alchemists sought to transmute the self and achieve spiritual enlightenment as well. One of the primary goals of alchemy was the creation of the Philosopher's Stone, a legendary substance that was believed to possess transformative powers. It was thought to have the ability to transmute base metals into noble metals and grant eternal life. The quest for the Philosopher's Stone was a central focus of many alchemists during the medieval period. Alchemy also had significant overlaps with early chemistry and medicine. Alchemists developed laboratory techniques, experimental methods, and apparatus that laid the groundwork for modern chemistry. They experimented with various substances, attempting to purify them and create new compounds. These experiments eventually led to advancements in the understanding of chemical processes. Over time, the practice of alchemy gradually evolved into modern chemistry, as scientific methods and approaches gained prominence. The emergence of the scientific method in the 17th century, coupled with the work of figures like Robert Boyle, Antoine Lavoisier, and others, marked a shift away from the mystical and spiritual aspects of alchemy towards a more empirical and evidence-based approach. While alchemy did not achieve its primary goal of turning base metals into gold or discovering the Philosopher's Stone, its legacy can still be seen in the development of chemistry and the understanding of natural processes. It also played a significant role in shaping the philosophical and cultural landscape of the Middle Ages. Alchemists had literally skin in the game, modern day scientists don't.

Equipped with mechanical "auto-mail" limbs, Edward becomes a state alchemist, seeking the one thing that can restore his brother and himself...the legendary Philosopher's Stone. There are many types of alchemy in the world. Edward's commanding officer, "Flame Alchemist" Roy Mustang, can control fire. Shou Tucker, the "Sewing-Life Alchemist," specializes in the most difficult alchemy of all...biological transmutation, the ability to alter the tissue of living things. But no matter what their power, alchemists are still human. And when a mysterious killer begins stalking state alchemists, no one can escape his vengeance...

Book excerpt: THIS Book shews to the initiated knowledge, but intensifies the ignorance of the vulgar. It is the book of honouring, increasing riches, and the book of the needy, putting to flight poverty. It is the book of confidence and truth, full of counsel for kings and of teaching for prelates, a book useful for sainted men, who wish to live unspotted of sin; a secret book, the Book of the Gift of God, to chosen men a pathway of true hope, a strength to those constant in firm faith, and who unwaveringly believe in my words. Alchemy is sought by the false and the true-by false seekers without number, but they are rejected. Many are aflame with the desire of gain, but amongst a thousand thousand scarce three are chosen. There are many called to knowledge, noble and poor, learned and ignorant, but they will not submit to toil, or await the time; they do not attain to the goal because they are ungrateful. The Book of our Art is clear as light to the sons of knowledge, to whom God has freely given to understand this matter. Only let them believe this prophetical saying; to the thankful all flows forth from the fount of Divine love.

The meaning of alchemy; The theory of physical alchemy; The alchemists before and after Paracelsus; The outcome of alchemy; The age of modern chemistry; Modern alchemy. H Stanley Redgrove, best known for his writings on alchemy. Early in his scientific career he was associated with Professor John Ferguson and others in forming the Alchemical Society and was appointed editor of its journal; that Society was one of the many killed by the last war. Redgrove's book on "Alchemy: Ancient and Modern," first published in 1912, is an excellent survey, which brings out clearly the connection between the old alchemical doctrines and the conceptions of modern chemistry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unclassical Traditions. Volume II: Perspectives from East and West in Late Antiquity is the second of two collections of essays by leading scholars discussing the nature and extent of the late-antique engagement with the classical past. Rather than concentrating on developments at the centre of empire (the focus of a previous volume, Unclassical Traditions I ), the aim here is to present a set of views from the margins: social, political, religious, literary, geographical and linguistic. Ranging from Armenian ecclesiastical histories, Egyptian alchemy and Jewish power politics, across the Mediterranean to the challenges raised by shifting circumstances in 5th-century North Africa and Ostrogothic Italy, the eight papers in this volume seek to establish the persistent importance of the classical tradition throughout a broadly defined late antiquity. Despite the divergent forms taken by these various responses, they are united by a common preoccupation with that still authoritative past. From these eastern and western perspectives - often peripheral and sometimes isolated - the classical past appears neither monolithic nor inflexible but as offering a set of assumptions or conventions that might be opposed or accepted, subverted or ignored or reworked into a striking variety of newly imagined worlds. Like its predecessor, this volume will be of interest to anyone concerned with the history, literature and culture of the later Roman empire. It stems from an international conference held in Cambridge in 2009, generously supported by the Faculty of Classics and the Henry Arthur Thomas Fund.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early Greek Alchemy, Patronage and Innovation in Late Antiquity provides an example of the innovative power of ancient scholarly patronage by looking at a key moment in the creation of the Greek alchemical tradition. New evidence on scholarly patronage under the Roman empire can be garnered by analyzing the descriptions of learned magoi in several texts from the second to the fourth century CE. Since a common use of the term magos connoted flatterer-like figures (kolakes), it is likely that the figures of "learned sorcerers" found in texts such as Lucian's Philopseudes and the apocryphal Acts of Peter captured the notion that some client scholars exerted undue influence over patrons. The first known author of alchemical commentaries, Zosimus of Panopolis (c. 300 CE), presented himself neither as a magos nor as an alchemist. In his treatises, he rather appears as a Christian scholar and the client of a rich woman named Theosebeia. In three polemical letters to his patroness, Zosimus attempted to discredit rival specialists of alchemy by describing them as magoi and demon-worshippers and by equating their techniques with Egyptian temple practice. In a subtler attempt to edge out his competitors, Zosimus pointed to their limited education and suggested that true alchemy could only be acquired by a meticulous interpretation of Greek alchemical texts. Extant evidence thus suggests that alchemical texts were first introduced among other Greek scholarly traditions when Zosimus annexed Egyptian temple rituals into the ambit of paideia thanks to the support and venue provided by his patroness.
