Book excerpt: Known for its charming communities and picturesque landscapes, a colorful patchwork quilt of farms, fields, and small towns, Stanly County possesses a rich Southern heritage, one forged by its dedication to agricultural development and small-town life. As urban sprawl rapidly encroaches on North Carolina's Piedmont region, it is vital that we remember and preserve our county's history, providing present and future generations a chance to connect to their ancestors' past, one that is truly special with the people of the Tar Heel State. This volume takes you on a visual journey into the Stanly County of yesteryear, where you will stroll through Albemarle's early downtown district, full of horses, wagons, and turn-of-the-century storefronts; where you will explore some of the county's budding rural communities, such as Oakboro, Badin, and Norwood; where you will experience the places in which the people worked, played, and lived, such as the early industrial mills, the farms, the one-room schoolhouses, and early businesses; and where you will meet some of the county's families and individuals, both prominent and everyday, such as a variety of soldiers, politicians, community leaders, farmers, merchants, and athletes.

Book Synopsis Stanly Has A Lynching by : M. Lynette Hartsell
Download or read book Stanly Has A Lynching written by M. Lynette Hartsell and published by . This book was released on 2018-09-20 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Stanly Has A Lynching" examines the ways in which the media as well as religious, political and social institutions have used ballads, fiction and folklore tales for over a century to celebrate, rather than condemn, the brutal lynching of a white man, Alexander Whitley, in 1892. How men in a small town in North Carolina justified this act of murder as "Just Desert" -- before, during and after the event -- is exposed when facts, rather than fiction, are brought into focus. Through her research and analysis, Ms. Hartsell demonstrates how a family legacy was tainted by a fabricated folktale embedded in religious motif. Many newspaper accounts from the 1800's help tell the story, conveying aspects of southern history and Lynch Culture not often found in textbooks.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The North Carolina Gazetteer first appeared to wide acclaim in 1968 and has remained an essential reference for anyone with a serious interest in the Tar Heel State, from historians to journalists, from creative writers to urban planners, from backpackers to armchair travelers. This revised and expanded edition adds approximately 1,200 new entries, bringing to nearly 21,000 the number of North Carolina cities, towns, crossroads, waterways, mountains, and other places identified here. The stories attached to place names are at the core of the book and the reason why it has stood the test of time. Some recall faraway places: Bombay, Shanghai, Moscow, Berlin. Others paint the locality as a little piece of heaven on earth: Bliss, Splendor, Sweet Home. In many cases the name derivations are unusual, sometimes wildly so: Cat Square, Huggins Hell, Tater Hill, Whynot. Telling us much about our own history in these snapshot histories of particular locales, The North Carolina Gazetteer provides an engaging, authoritative, and fully updated reference to place names from all corners of the Tar Heel State.
