Book excerpt: 'The Area Handbook for Albania' seeks to present an overview of the various social, political, and economic aspects of the country as they appeared in 1970. The leaders of the Communist Party have gone to extremes to maintain an aura of secrecy about their nation and their efforts to govern it. Material on Albania is scanty and some that is available is not reliable but, using their own judgments on sources, the authors have striven for objectivity in this effort to depict Albanian society in 1970.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Northern Albania and Montenegro are the only regions in Europe to have retained a true tribal society up to the mid-twentieth century. This book provides the first scholarly investigation of this tribal society, a pioneer work that offers a detailed survey of all the major Albanian-speaking tribes in Albania, Montenegro and Kosovo. Robert Elsie provides comprehensive material on the 69 different tribes, including data on their locations, religious affiliations, tribal structures and relations, population statistics, tribal folklore, legends and history. Also included are excerpts from the works of prominent nineteenth and early-twentieth century writers, such as Edith Durham and Johann Georg von Hahn, who travelled through the tribal regions, as well as short biographies on prominent figures linked to the tribes. As the first book of its kind, The Tribes of Albania will be of interest to scholars and students of the Balkans, of southeastern European anthropology, ethnography and history. 'The tribal system of northern Albania is one of the most fascinating aspects of a very distinctive part of Europe. Over hundreds of years, when their territory was under Ottoman rule but seldom fully under Ottoman control, these tribes provided a basis for social identity, local justice and military action. So cohesive were they that the unity of a tribe could easily survive the conversion of one part of it to Islam. Anyone who studies the history of these people will encounter tribal names and tribal identities at every step; and yet, until now, there has never been a general work gathering all the scattered information about them that survives in sources of many different kinds. The Tribes of Albania will be an indispensable and authoritative work of reference. There are few people in the world who could have written such a work; absolutely no one could have done it as well as Robert Elsie, whose knowledge of this material is unparalleled.' - Sir Noel Malcolm, Senior Research Fellow, All Souls College, University of Oxford

Book excerpt: Since the demise of Communism, Albanians have been extremely exposed to the forces of the liberal market economy and the turbulence of globalization. No other country in this region of Europe has experienced such tremendous social and economic transformations. The contributions in this book tackle important areas of change in Albania, from both contemporary and historical perspectives. The book focuses on the political, legal, and administrative dimensions; on various effects of migration; on changing family and kinship relations; and on the transformation of gender positions. Book excerpt: This is the first full account of a country that, following decades of isolation, has undergone unprecedented changes to its political system: the collapse of communism, the progression to multi-party elections and the upheaval that followed the March 1997 uprising. Miranda Vickers traces the history of the Albanian people from the Ottoman period to the formation of the Albanian Communist Party. She considers the charismatic leadership of Enver Hoxha; Albania's relationship with Tito and the alliance with the Soviet Union and then China; and the long period of isolation. Newly revised for this paperback edition, The Albanians considers the gradual process of reform and the fragility of the Albanian experiment with democracy, and includes a dramatic account of the days leading up to Sali Berisha's resignation of the presidency. It has now been updated to cover the crisis in Kosovo that has led to the first 'Western' war in Europe since 1945.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discover the fascinating story of the Albanian people, whose rich heritage dates back to the ancient Illyrians, inhabitants of the Balkan peninsula since pre-Homeric times. A Short History of Albania and the Albanian People takes you on an enlightening expedition through the pivotal moments that shaped this unique and resilient culture, leading up to the establishment of Albania as a sovereign nation in 1912.At the heart of Albania' s distinctiveness lies its language, derived from ancient Illyrian, setting it apart from neighboring Slavic and Greek communities. This linguistic connection with their ancestors has played a significant role in preserving their ethnic identity throughout history despite political and religious divisions. In the fifteenth century, George Castriota Scanderbeg emerged as a charismatic leader, uniting Albanians from diverse regions and dialects in a shared resistance against foreign aggression. This pivotal moment in history solidified the foundations of the Albanian ethnic identity. The Ottoman conquest ultimately increased religious divisions among the people, but their unwavering sense of ethnic unity persisted. As Iorga demonstrates, by the late nineteenth century, the seeds of a national state had been sown.Among the pioneers in exploring the history of Albania, the esteemed Romanian historian, Nicolae Iorga (1870-1941) uncovered profound connections between the Albanian people and his own Romanian heritage, both tracing back to a shared origin as Thraco-Illyrian descendants. His insightful analysis enriches his narrative and provides a broader context for understanding Albanian history. The book is enhanced with an illuminating introduction by A.K. Brackob, a renowned scholar of Southeast European history whose books include Scanderbeg and The Formation of Albanian National Consciousness. Now available for the first time in English, A Short History of Albania and the Albanian People is an essential read for history enthusiasts and anyone seeking to grasp the complexity and resilience of a people whose roots date back to ancient times. Embark on this captivating voyage, delving into the rich tapestry of Albania' s past and the indomitable spirit of the Albanian people that endures to this day.

Book excerpt: Comparing the GDP growth rates of different regions can play a role in asset allocation, helping investment decisions in fast-growing regional economies. However, experts clarify on the other hand, that beyond the foreign investments that have entered Albania, the lack of diversification of sectors and the increase in the utilization capacities of the productive sectors in the country remains an unaddressed challenge with a sharp impact on the productivity of the economy. This is evident in the fact that Albania in 2022 with a weight of 16 percent of the population of the Western Balkans (BP6) produces as much as 13 percent of it, or at least below the weight of the population. This ratio has changed for the worse compared to 10 years ago, where the weight of Albania's population was 14% of the population and produced again as much as 13% of it.Meanwhile, developed countries produce 2-3 times more added value than the weight of their population.Effective employment is growing much more slowly and in some cases is declining. Aging is becoming pronounced, leading to a decline in the support ratio. In regions of the country, GDP and income per effective consumer are likely to grow more slowly because of demographic changes. No other region of the country is as prosperous or innovative as Tirana, according to the indicator of the regional weight in the national GDP. On the other hand, according to long-term forecasts, the size of the economy of other regions is unlikely to come close to that of Tirana.Because high-income and upper-middle-income Tirana and Durrës have larger economies, developments there may dominate the country's economic trends. The population is projected to decrease 15.8% between 2020 and 2050, despite a slowdown in its growth rate. The main source of the obstacle for further and sustainable growth of the country's regions is the weak support of innovation and the still unopened market to be an integral part of the chain of the regional and national economy based on rules.

Book excerpt: Kosovo's declaration of independence in 2008 - and the overt manipulation of this precedent by Russia in its war with Georgia and South Ossetia shortly afterwards - has focused the world's attention once again on the Balkans. But Albania's role within the region remains little known and less understood. In this revised edition of a major work of contemporary history, two well-known and internationally-respected authorities elucidate Albania's place in the Balkans, from the explosion of violence in the 1990s, which brought the country to the brink of civil war, to the present day. Since 1997, the Albanian region has been forced simultaneously to come to terms with the realities of a post-Communist world and the threat of Slobodan Milosevic's 'Greater Serbia' project. Its people, the authors, argue are involved in the process of national self-emancipation: the re-establishment of free markets and ending of Communist border controls have renewed long dormant cultural and economic links between the Albanian people and the wider region. The future of the Albanians in the Balkans is the most pressing issue in the region today, a fact which the West must pay close heed to if this long neglected nation is to become a European partner. Indeed, the authors argue, in this rapidly evolving political climate, failure to come to terms with the importance of the Albanian question could return the region as a whole to armed conflict.

Book excerpt: As Albania is accelerating its preparations towards candidate country status in the European Union (EU), numerous areas of public policy and –practices are undergoing intensive development. Regional development policy is a very new area of public policy in Albania and needs research and development. This study examines the process of sustainable development in Albania by analysing and comparing the regional development of the regions Tirana, Shkodra and Kukes. With regards to methodology the study relies on a review of literature as well as an analytical review of and a comparative approach to the three case regions, ensuring adequate quality through interviews and quantitative relevance through data collection. The research is organised in five chapters. The first chapter provides an overview over the research. The second chapter outlines the theories and scientific framework underlying the sustainable–development-to-regional-development process and its links to geography. The third chapter presents the overall picture of the regional development efforts in Albania, analysing disparities and regional development in the light of EU requirements and NUTS division. Chapter 4 continues this discourse by highlighting the regional development of the three regions: Tirana (driver for change), Shkodra (the North in development) and Kukes (the “shrinking” region). Conclusions and recommendations are presented in chapter 5. This research comes to the conclusions that if growth in Albania is to be increased and sustained, a regional development policy needs to be established.
