Book excerpt: The St Albans Psalter, made in the 1130s, is one of the great monuments of English Romanesque painting and has survived the disasters of religious upheaval and war in pristine condition. The sequence of forty full-page miniatures illustrating the Life of Christ establishes their artist, the so-called Alexis Master, as one of the most influential painters in early twelfth-century England. It includes 215 initials illustrating the psalms in a vigorously literal way. Their inventiveness and charm belie the complex theological and personal messages which they convey. This new book by Dr. Jane Geddes is the first to reproduce so much of the psalter in color, but it also fully integrates the psalter's contents into the historical context of its probable patron, Abbot Geoffrey of St Albans and its recipient, the Anglo-Saxon hermitess Christina of Markyate. Using a record of Christina's life, written by a St Albans monk, the book examines in depth every aspect of the psalter, tying it in closely to the lives of Christina of Markyate and Abbot Geoffrey. Through her close analysis, Geddes provides a profound insight into female literacy, Anglo-Norman relations, the organization of England's premier scriptorium, monk-nun relations and the emerging Anglo-Norman language. This new book demonstrates the significance of the St Albans Psalter, which in social terms is as important as the Bayeux Tapestry, crystallising the artistic, spiritual and emotional integration of Anglo-Saxons and Normans.

Book excerpt: St Albans Abbey is one of Britain's earliest Christian foundations and commemorates Britain's first Christian martyr, the Romano-British saint Alban, who was executed in about AD 300. For more than 1700 years people have gathered and worshipped on this site. St Albans: Cathedral and Abbey, produced to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Friends of St Alban's Abbey in 2009, tells the story of the Abbey from Alban to the present day. The imposing and much-loved building that we see today was built as an abbey in the Norman era and raised to cathedral status in 1877. The text is lavishly illustrated with a wonderful series of specially commissioned photographs taken by St Albans-based photographer Donato Cinicolo, who had had access to all parts of the site and captured its many events and its changing moods throughout the year. The book's six chapters are all by specialists in their fields. Martin Biddle and Birthe Kjølbye-Biddle tell the story of Alban, his cult and the shrines associated with it, based on their excavations and on recent research. Canon Iain Lane reflects on pilgrimage to the Abbey through the ages. John McNeill surveys the monastic buildings and their architecture, while James Clark focuses on the cultural and spiritual life of the monastery, and above all its tradition of manuscript production. Jane Kelsall tells the Abbey story from its dissolution under Henry VIII to its controversial restoration in the nineteenth century. Finally the Dean celebrates and reflects on the variety and vitality of life in the Abbey today. St Albans: Cathedral and Abbey is a celebration, in words and pictures, of the unique St Albans story, capturing the essence of this memorable place. AUTHOR: Professor Martin Biddle FBA, is the Cathedral Archaeological Consultant and a member of the Fabric Advisory Committee. With his wife Magister Birthe Kjolbye-Biddle, he has directed all archaeological excavations at St Alban's Abbey since 1978. Together they have led archaeological investigations at Winchester, Repton, Qasr Ibrim in Nubia and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. Donato Cinicolo is a professional photographer who has lived within the sound of the Abbey bells for over 40 years. Dr James Clark is Senior Lecturer in Later Medieval History at the University of Bristol and he has written extensively on the medieval abbey of St Albans. Very Reverend Dr Jeffrey John is a distinguished theologian, preacher, teacher, writer and pastor. He became the Dean of St Albans in 2004. Jane Kelsall is a locally born art historian. A popular lecturer and an experienced Abbey Guide, she has written and contributed to many books and articles on the Abbey's history. Canon Iain Lane is a former Education Canon with responsibility for welcome at St Alban's Cathedral. He has lectured widely and currently teaches at the Christian Study centre in St Albans. John McNeill is Lecturer in the History of Medieval Architecture at Birkbeck College and Oxford University and a member of St Alban's Cathedral's Fabric Advisory Committee. 162 colour & 14 b/w illustrations

Book excerpt: The momentous encounter between Christian thought and Greek philosophy reached a high point in fourth-century Byzantium, and the principal actors were four Greek-speaking Christian thinkers whose collective influence on the Eastern Church was comparable to that of Augustine on Western Latin Christendom. In this erudite and informative book, a distinguished scholar provides the first coherent account of the lives and writings of these so-called Cappadocians (named for a region in what is now eastern Turkey), showing how they managed to be Greek and Christian at the same time. Jaroslav Pelikan describes the four Cappadocians--Gregory of Nazianzus, Basil of Caesarea, Gregory of Nyssa, and Macrina, sister and teacher of the last two--who were trained in Classical culture, philosophy, and rhetoric but who were also defenders and expositors of Christian orthodoxy. On one issue of faith and life after another--the nature of religious language, the ways of knowing, the existence of God, the universe as cosmos, time, and space, free will and immortality, the nature of the good life, the purpose of the universe--they challenged and debated the validity of the Greek philosophical tradition in interpreting Scripture. Because the way they resolved these issues became the very definition of normative Christian belief, says Pelikan, their system is still a key to our understanding not only of Christianity's diverse religious traditions but also of its intellectual and philosophical traditions. This book is based on the prestigious Gifford Lectures, presented by Jaroslav Pelikan at the University of Aberdeen in 1992 and 1993.

While the dream of post-racial America remains unfulfilled and the current turmoil (George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, to name a few), this examination of racism is more relevant and consequential than ever. Living into God’s Dream combines frontline personal stories with theoretical and theological reflections. It aims to forge new and truthful conversations on race and doesn’t shy away from difficult discussions, such as reasons for the failure of past efforts to achieve genuine racial reconciliation and the necessity to honor rage and grief in the process of moving to forgiveness and racial healing. This collection of nine essays is honest, pragmatic, and courageous in its real-world view of racism and how people of faith and conscience can work together to “dismantle racism.” Review questions at the end of the book, appropriate for individual or group study, can engender deeper discussions and reflections.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: St Albans has a long tradition of archaeological investigation dating back to the 18th century. What has been lacking however, is a detailed synthesis and interpretation of the accumulated information. This book is intended to meet that need, and comes out of a project set up by English Heritage in 1992 designed to promote 'intensive' urban archaeological strategy. This volume is a critical assessment of the current archaeological information from an area of 12 square kilometers centred on medieval and modern St Albans and its Roman predecessor, Verulamium. There is evidence of scattered occupation in the area from the Mesolithic period onwards, but it was only towards the end of the 1st century BC that a settlement was established to the south of the modern town. This was superseded by the development of the Roman town of Verulamium on the south side of the River Ver, but by the 8th century settlement had become focused on the shrine of the late Roman martyr, Alban, on the hill to the north of the river. In the late Saxon period an Abbey was established close to this shrine, and after the Norman conquest, settlement concentrated in the area north of the Abbey. Most of the monastic buildings were demolished shortly after the dissolution of the monastery in 1539, but on the whole St Albans retained its medieval form until the 19th century. The papers in this volume look at the development of this important city throughout its long history, bringing its Roman and Medieval past to life.
