Book excerpt: Russia first encountered Alaska in 1741 as part of the most ambitious and expensive expedition of the entire 18th century. During the next 126 years the struggle to develop and refine geographic knowledge of the vast region comprising northeastern Asia, the North Pacific, and Alaska met with many obstacles, including inclement weather, the chain of supply over great distances, the need to train expert navigators and cartographers, and false leads due to spurious voyage accounts. For much of this era, critical geographic knowledge was kept as a state secret in Russia and not shared, even with the very navigators and cartographers who were developing much needed maps and navigational aids. Despite this, a rich cartographic heritage developed to be carried forward into the American era. The traditional Russian cartographic methods were applied to new discoveries in Siberia and beyond. Early fur traders and explorers utilized this system which for a time co-existed with the new cartographic methodology utilized in Europe and adopted for use by the Russia of Peter the Great. It became an age of scientific exploration. Great Britain, France, Spain, but especially Russia, sent expeditions. An increasingly complete knowledge of the coasts of North America, with forays into the interior, emerged. Postnikov describes the explorations and richly illustrates how the resulting maps evolved and contributed to the world’s knowledge of one of the last great regions of the world to be explored.

Book excerpt: - Waterproof - Tear-Resistant - Travel Map Alaska is a land so vast that is boggles the imagination. It is so large that it could easily contain the next three largest states: Texas, California, and Montana and still have room left over. Despite its large size Alaska has very few inhabitants making it the state with the lowest population density. Alaska is known for its dramatic, diverse terrain of wide-open spaces, mountains and forests, with abundant wildlife and many small towns. A majority of Alaska, sixty percent, is owned and managed by the Federal Government. These lands are open to the public and offer a wide range of activities from sightseeing in Denali National Park to river-running and fishing on one of many wild rivers. Many vistors to Alaska choose to arrive via cruise ship through the famous Inside Passage. The Alaska Adventure Map shows all of these features and more from the temperate rain forest in the Pan Handle to the arctic tundra of the North Slope. This is a state of diverse and wide open spaces that are still truly wild. Alaska's most famous hotspots, like Denali, Anchorage, the Inside Passage, Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park, and many others are clearly marked on the map. The boundaries of National Parks, National Forests, Natural Reserves and Wildlife Refuges are all clearly marked. With such a wealth of content, the map is an ideal complement to National Geographic's Inside Passage Destination Map or any other guidebook to the area. Every Adventure Map is printed on durable synthetic paper, making them waterproof, tear-resistant and tough -- capable of withstanding the rigors of international travel. Book excerpt: In the late 1800s, John Muir made several trips to the pristine, relatively unexplored territory of Alaska, irresistibly drawn to its awe-inspiring glaciers and its wild menagerie of bears, bald eagles, wolves, and whales. Half-poet and half-geologist, he recorded his experiences and reflections in "Travels in Alaska," a work he was in the process of completing at the time of his death in 1914. As Edward Hoagland writes in his Introduction, "A century and a quarter later, we are reading ÝMuir's ̈ account because there in the glorious fiords . . . he is at our elbow, nudging us along, prompting us to understand that heaven is on earth--is the Earth--and rapture is the sensible response wherever a clear line of sight remains." This Modern Library Paperback Classic includes photographs from the original 1915 edition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Russia first encountered Alaska in 1741 as part of the most ambitious and expensive expedition of the entire eighteenth century. For centuries since, cartographers have struggled to define and develop the enormous region comprising northeastern Asia, the North Pacific, and Alaska. The forces of nature and the follies of human error conspired to make the area incredibly difficult to map. Exploring and Mapping Alaska focuses on this foundational period in Arctic cartography. Russia spurred a golden era of cartographic exploration, while shrouding their efforts in a veil of secrecy. They drew both on old systems developed by early fur traders and new methodologies created in Europe. With Great Britain, France, and Spain following close behind, their expeditions led to an astounding increase in the world’s knowledge of North America. Through engrossing descriptions of the explorations and expert navigators, aided by informative illustrations, readers can clearly trace the evolution of the maps of the era, watching as a once-mysterious region came into sharper focus. The result of years of cross-continental research, Exploring and Mapping Alaska is a fascinating study of the trials and triumphs of one of the last great eras of historic mapmaking.

Book excerpt: • Waterproof • Tear-Resistant • Travel Map Explore the exhilarating majesty and mystique of Southeast Alaska with National Geographic's Alaska's Inside Passage DestinationMap. The Inside Passage is a meandering waterway formed by a myriad of islands that lie between the North Pacific Ocean and the quieter waters along the coast. At its heart is the Tongass National Forest, the largest national forest in the United States which at a staggering 16.8 million acres contains 19 designated wilderness areas and the Admiralty Island and Misty Fiords National Monuments. This remarkable region of Alaska boasts unparalleled scenery and countless opportunities to experience some of Alaska's most amazing and diverse wildlife as well as its rich native culture and history. Visitors can view the ever-changing landscape of Glacier Bay from passenger ships or wind through Tongass National Forest in a sea kayak. Few roads exist in the region so travel is mainly done by boat or seaplane, both of which allow for a greater opportunity to absorb the icy peaks, spruce-hemlock rain forests, and azure waters. What sets National Geographic maps apart from traditional maps are the rich detail, craftsmanship, and depth of information provided in a colorful and user-friendly format. The front side of Alaska's Inside Passage reveals a striking map of the region from the northern reaches of Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve south to Prince of Wales Island. Information about the islands and other land features, wildlife viewing and safety, the weather, the tides and more is included. The reverse side of the map provides invaluable content for travelers with extensive descriptions of points of interest and information about tours, outfitters, visitor associations, lodging, the geology of the region, and local indiginous cultures. A National Parks chart includes services offered and contact information for each park, and an additional map of the entire state of Alaska provides context for the region. Alaska's Inside Passage is printed in the U.S.A. on a durable synthetic paper, making it waterproof, tear-resistant, and trail tough — capable of going anywhere you do. The map is two-sided, and can be folded to a packable size of 4.25" x 9.25", unfolded size is 26" x 38". Net proceeds from the sale of this map go to support the nonprofit mission of the National Geographic Society. Key Features: • Chart of Alaska's national parks including services and contact information • Colorful photographs and information about some of the region's diverse wildlife including brown bears, salmon, bald eagles, orcas, sea lions, harbor seals, mountain goats, humpback whales, and puffins • Alaska Marine Highway, state and provincial highways, and sites for scheduled air or seaplane service • National parks and monuments, wildlife refuges, and wilderness areas • Detailed information about tides, weather, water features, wildlife viewing and safety, native cultures, geology, and more • Descriptive content about Tongass National Forest, Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park, Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve, and Sitka National Historical Park Popular Places Included on the Map: Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve, Tongass National Forest, Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park, Sitka National Historical Park, Misty Fjords National Monument Wilderness, Admiralty Island National Monument Kootzoowoo Wilderness, Chichagof Island, Tracy Arm-Fords Terror Wilderness, South Baranof Wilderness, Stikine-LeConte Wilderness, Prince of Wales Island, Revillagigedo Island, Kupreanof Island, Kuiu Island Fold Size = 4.25 x 9.25 Sheet Size = 25.50 x 37.75 Scale = 1:880,000
