Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although wetlands cover over half of Alaska, the status, management and regulation of these areas is problematic. The technical literature on Alaskan wetland vegetation, soils and hydrology is abundant, but the application of the literature to wetland management is poorly developed. This report identifies problems, issues and information gaps in the management of Alaskan wetlands. There are numerous arguments and debates on the designation, function and values, and disturbance of certain wetlands in Alaska. Permafrost, fire cycles and unique hydrologic regimes complicate the designation and delineation of Alaskan wetlands. The functions and values of most Alaskan wetlands clearly lie in their importance as habitat, particularly for migrating waterbirds, but an understanding of their role in flood water storage, water quality improvement, subsistence and other functions remains controversial and in need of study. Disturbance and other impacts on Alaskan wetlands is small relative to the large area that wetlands cover and in comparison with the loss of wetlands in the lower 48 states. However, several development projects in Alaska have affected large wetland areas and methods to restore these wetlands are being developed. Cumulative impacts are unknown, as are techniques for restoring permafrost wetlands containing gravel fill.

Book excerpt: The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has been conducting the National Wetlands Inventory for over 25 years. The NWI Program has produced wetland maps for 91% (78% final) of the lower 48 states, all of Hawaii, and 35% of Alaska. Wetlands are classified according to the Service's official wetland classification system (Cowardin et al. 1979). This classification describes wetlands by ecological system (Marine, Estuarine, Lacustrine, Riverine, and Palustrine), by subsystem (e.g., water depth, exposure to tides), class (vegetative life form or substrate type), subclass, water regimes (hydrology), water chemistry (pH and salinity), and special modifiers (e.g., alterations by humans). The maps have been converted to digital data for 47% of the lower 48 states and 18% of Alaska. The availability of digital data and geographic information system (GIS) technology make it possible to use NWI data for various geospatial analyses.

Book excerpt: Understand the current concept of wetland and methods for identifying, describing, classifying, and delineating wetlands in the United States with Wetland Indicators - capturing the current state of science's role in wetland recognition and mapping. Environmental scientists and others involved with wetland regulations can strengthen their knowledge about wetlands, and the use of various indicators, to support their decisions on difficult wetland determinations. Professor Tiner primarily focuses on plants, soils, and other signs of wetland hydrology in the soil, or on the surface of wetlands in his discussion of Wetland Indicators. Practicing - and aspiring - wetland delineators alike will appreciate Wetland Indicators' critical insight into the development and significance of hydrophytic vegetation, hydric soils, and other factors. Book excerpt: The Copper River Delta (CRD) stretches 75 km. along the south-central coastline of Alaska. It is the terminus of the outwash deposits from a large part of the most heavily glaciated region of N. Amer., & all major rivers that flow into the delta carry high levels of suspended sediments. In 1964, a severe earthquake raised the entire delta from 1.8 to 3.4 meters above the previous mean sea level. Subtidal areas became intertidal, & intertidal areas supertidal. Vegetation on newly supertidal levees changed from herb to shrub. A change in frequency & duration of tidal inundation & water salinity is the most obvious cause. The uplift appears to have altered locations & rates, but not the nature, of wetland plant succession on the CRD. Illustrations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Wetlands" has become a hot word in the current environmental debate. But what does it signify? In 1991, proposed changes in the legal definities of wetlands stirred controversy and focused attention on the scientific and economic aspects of their management. This volume explores how to define wetlands. The committeeâ€"whose members were drawn from academia, government, business, and the environmental communityâ€"builds a rational, scientific basis for delineating wetlands in the landscape and offers recommendations for further action. Wetlands also discusses the diverse hydrological and ecological functions of wetlands, and makes recommendations concerning so-called controversial areas such as permafrost wetlands, riparian ecosystems, irregularly flooded sites, and agricultural wetlands. It presents criteria for identifying wetlands and explores the problems of applying those criteria when there are seasonal changes in water levels. This comprehensive and practical volume will be of interest to environmental scientists and advocates, hydrologists, policymakers, regulators, faculty, researchers, and students of environmental studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Water balances were conducted on a wetland complex near Council, Alaska on the Seward Peninsula during the 2001 and 2002 summers in order to investigate the possibility of subsurface drainage through open taliks. Ponds formed by ground subsidence resulting from the melting of ice-rich permafrost (thermokarst) are common in the valley east of Council. The majority of these ponds are displaying a decreased surface area when compared with aerial photographs and satellite imagery from the 1950's and 1980's. Because the long-term temperature and precipitation data from Nome do not reveal any conclusive climate trends that might result in the drying of the ponds, the cause of this change is suspected to be linked to the local permafrost and thermokarst conditions. From geophysical surveys, the permafrost in the area is typically 20 to 60 meters thick, and underneath the shrinking thermokarst ponds are large thawed regions (taliks), most of which extend through the local permafrost (open taliks). Downward hydraulic gradients have been identified in nested wells drilled into the open taliks, indicating the downward migration of water from the ponds to the subpermafrost groundwater. It was hypothesized that this water loss mechanism has a considerable impact on the hydrologic dynamics of the ponds and is related to recent drying. The results of this two-year study demonstrate that evapotranspiration and lateral drainage are capable of accounting for essentially all of the observed storage changes during rainy periods. During dry periods, the combined water lost via subsurface drainage through an open talik and lateral drainage into nearby wetlands is less than the water lost through evapotranspiration. The magnitude of the subsurface drainage component of the water balance is confounded by the inability to quantify the subtle but influential lateral fluxes into nearby wetlands"--Leaf iii.
