Especially since her "special ability" has yet to make itself known. Well, at least she has her diner and somehow always knows just what culinary delight certain customers need. Carlee Logan is having a day from hell. Instead of a promotion, she's being transferred to the Siberia of job assignments in Alaska because of a lecherous co-worker and his jealous wife's connections. As if on cue, the pushy waitress at Destiny's Diner insists Baked Alaska is just what she needs. Coincidence? Maybe not. With her first bite, the oddest thing happens. Oh yes, the oddest and most wonderful thing. She's transported to a snow-covered fantasy with a man who claims they're engaged. She's not sure if she's gone off the deep end, but she's more than ready for another taste of sexual bliss.

Hanukkah in Alaska is unlike anywhere else. Snow piles up over the windows. Daylight is only five hours long. And one girl finds a moose camped out in her backyard, right near her favorite blue swing. She tries everything to lure it away: apples, carrots, even cookies. But it just keeps eating more tree! It's not until the last night of Hanukkah that a familiar Jewish holiday tradition provides the perfect—and surprising—solution.

Book excerpt: In 1962 Mary Carey, newly widowed, drove the Alcan Highway alone from Texas to Alaska, where she would make herself a new life. And her life there - whether she was teaching in an eight-pupil pilot school in Talkeetna, flying Mt. McKinley with bush pilot Don Sheldon, or homesteading in the Alaskan wilderness - was one of continuous pioneering. A crackerjack photojournalist -- she obtained exclusive eyewitness coverage of the 1964 earthquake in Kodiak, Seward, and Valdez - Ms. Carey won five first prizes in an Alaskan Press Clubs contest in 1963. She did not re-enter the contest until 1974, at which time the lady walked off with three more first prizes. Previously, in 1955, she won the National True Story Award - a $5,000 prize. Mary Carey was the owner and proprietor of Mary's McKinley View Lodge, which she built on her homestead in 1972. There she baked sixty-four pies each day, welcomed guests, gave lectures to tourists, and somehow found time for rock hunting and writing. Mary died suddenly at the age of 91, on June 18, 2004, at her beloved Mary's McKinley View Lodge. She left a rich legacy and a loving family from a life well-lived.

Book excerpt: "Jennifer Snow is one clever writer."—RT Book Reviews The Alaskan wilderness may be the best place to protect her client, but also where it’s impossible to protect her heart. Needing a safe place to hide her latest client, agent Leslie Sanders returns to her hometown of Wild River to wait out the search for the young Hollywood star’s stalker. Just being back in Alaska is stirring up emotions she’d buried, and as much as Leslie believed she was moving on with her life in LA, she’s still not over the death of her fiancé. The sun, sand and surf made it easy to forget cold Alaskan nights snuggled by the fire, planning a future with Dawson…but seeing Levi Grayson just makes everything that much harder. Levi Grayson has been one of Alaska’s elite group of wildland firefighters for almost ten years, but nothing about his job rattles him as much as seeing Leslie again. When Leslie left Wild River after Dawson’s death, it had hurt to lose his two best friends in a matter of weeks. Resisting his feelings for her when Dawson was alive was tough, but he’s not sure he’s strong enough anymore to fight the attraction between them, or to let this last chance at love slip away like smoke through his fingers. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alaska, with its Indian, Eskimo, and Aleut heritage, its century of Russian colonization, its peoples’ formidable struggles to wrest a living (or a fortune) from the North’s isolated and harsh environment, and its relatively recent achievement of statehood, has long captured the popular imagination. In An Alaska Anthology, twenty-five contemporary scholars explore the region’s pivotal events, significant themes, and major players, Native, Russian, Canadian, and American. The essays chosen for this anthology represent the very best writing on Alaska, giving great depth to our understanding and appreciation of its history from the days of Russian-American Company domination to the more recent threat of nuclear testing by the Atomic Energy Commission and the influence of oil money on inexperienced politicians. Readers may be familiar with an earlier anthology, Interpreting Alaska’s History, from which the present volume evolved to accommodate an explosion of research in the past decade. While a number of the original pieces were found to be irreplaceable, more than half of the essays are new. The result is a fresh perspective on the subject and an invaluable resource for students, teachers, and scholars.
