Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author has worked to answer all your questions about travel and recreation in a state so remote. This guide attempts to target your interests and save you time, money, and effort so that nothing is wasted during your trip. Because Alaska is so big and your options so varied, the guide is organized so you can zero in on the activity or activities that appeal to you most. Thirteen chapters focus solely on adventure travel, each devoted to a single activity. The five regional chapters that follow focus primarily on the basics in a given area of the state: getting around, shopping, lodging, dining, and entertainment. Once you've chosen the adventure of your dreams, you can go to the appropriate regional chapter to get the scoop on the best places in the vicinity to stay, eat, buy gear, rent a car, and learn about local culture and history. Outdoor travelers also are likely independent travelers. A multitude of companies offer exciting-sounding jaunts to scenic places all over the state, but many of these outfits work only with tour providers, such as cruise-ship operators, to obtain large numbers of clients per trip--thus excluding people who wish to travel on their own. In this guide, all our listings are available to independent travelers as well as those in tour groups. The objective is not to provide the most information about destinations or attractions, but, rather, the most useful information. The guide is opinionated, and for good reason. Any destination or outfitter listed here has made the cut by proving itself a wonderful place to visit or a reliable company with which to do business. If, for example, you want to learn more about sea kayaking in Alaska, you will not be supplied with every operation in the business--and believe us, there are many of them competing for your dollars. What you will get is a select assortment of those we consider best, and why. After all, isn't the point of a guidebook to help you make the most informed choices?

Book excerpt: Features hiking, skiing, paddling, biking, and more New and substantially revised trips with all new full-color photos and maps throughout Emphasis on traverses and loop trips for both summer and winter, always with simpler and shorter options Originally published in 1972, the classic guide known as 55 Ways to the Wilderness in Southcentral Alaska has been fully updated and reinvented as Alaska Adventure 55 Ways. This robust reboot covers a diverse range of activities for year-round fun, from quick day trips to adventures that could extend to a week or longer, including canoe trails, wilderness cabins, easy summits, forest walks, cross-country ski routes, summer mountain biking and winter fat bike trails, wild skating, and more. John Wolfe Jr. and Rebecca Wolfe, a father-daughter team, describe activities spanning the broad swath of Southcentral Alaska, 300 miles north to south and 350 miles east to west. The guide features activities on the lakes and peaks of the Kenai Peninsula, the Anchorage front range, the Matanuska and Susitna Valleys, and the Copper River basin, taking in Chugach and Denali State Parks, Chugach National Forest, Kenai Fjords and Wrangell St. Elias National Parks, several wildlife refuges, and portions of the Iditarod National Historic Trail. With an emphasis on adventures regular people can enjoy and destinations that don’t require highly technical skills, expensive flights to remote locations, or demanding levels of athletic fitness, this guide appeals to all ages, with family-friendly shorter options and trip extensions adding up to more than a hundred "ways" to adventure.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most comprehensive and enjoyable guide to traveling the highway, from British Columbia up to Prudhoe Bay. Covers Fairbanks, Anchorage, Denali National Park, Valdez and much more. Filled with inside tips on where to see wildlife, the sites you shouldn't miss, the best places to camp. You'll also find information on sidetrips along alternate highways: the Top-of-the-World, the Haines, the Stewart-Cassiar, the South Klondike, the Richardson and the Glen. A one-stop resource for Alaska-bound travelers. Includes a detailed chapter on the Alaska Marine Highway, the ferry system that is one of the best ways to see and reach otherwise inaccessible areas. While the Milepost will give you every pullout and scenic view on the highway, this book is great reading about what to do, and what to see on your way. The information is very accurate and interesting. In this book, when you look up a certain place you end up reading on and on.--Amazon.com customer I recently rode my motorcycle up the Alaska Highway and space was pretty limited. I photocopied pages out of various other books, but brought this one along intact. It stayed in my tankbag every day, was brought out at every meal, and was pored over in hotel rooms at night. I'm also a writer, and my Adventure Guide to the Alaska Highway became my de facto notebook on the trip--post-it notes of every color peek out from its pages; notes line the margins. There are a finite number of places to stop along the Alaska Highway; most guidebooks will give you pretty much all of them. What makes this one different is its tone. The authors obvious enjoy both the road and writing about it. Personal anecdotes are lightly sprinkled into the text, giving the impression that yes, the authors know what they're talking about. I learned little bits of history about the areas I rode through; not so much that it weighed down the book, but just enough to pique my interest and send me scampering to the library once I got back. Also, the book is laid out very well. The font is easy on the eyes; bold section headers made it easy to find what I was looking for, even while balancing the book on my tankbag after pulling to the side of some gravelly road in the middle of nowhere.--Carolyn Boyce, reader If you think you'll ever want to plan a trip either by car or motorcycle to the great state of Alaska, this book is a must-have. Not only does provide everything you could ever ask for, it comes in a small package that packs away nicely.-- Big D (reader) I took this book with the AAA guidebook on my trip to Alaska, read the AAA intro on the plane there and read only this book for the rest of the trip. We traveled more than 2,000 miles on the Alaska Highway. This book has been a great companion and guide book wherever we go. I even did some more reading on the plane back home because the writing was interesting. It may be partly because Alaska is such an interesting subject; but the book is definitely fun to read.--Amazon.com customer

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This adventure guide is written to advise you that Alaska and how you get there offers a lot more than these few things. Getting there from the lower 48 can be an additional exciting adventure, whether you fly, drive or go by boat. The most difficult part of writing this adventure guide was deciding not what to include but what, because of space limitations, to leave out.The places included are simply places we visited and enjoyed, places every family member, from the youngest to the oldest can enjoy. They are some of our personal favorites and we would like to share them with you. You don't have to start where we did or drive in the direction we did, you can start anywhere and join the route any place, go any direction as long as you enjoy the journey. This is not intended to be a technical reference work. You won't find maps, or detail direction. Instead, this guide is meant to encourage you to get out and sample some new places that might be fun, intriguing, strange, and maybe educational. Remember half of the fun traveling is discovery.Maybe it is time to get out your maps and start planning your trip to Alaska, California, Route 66 or some other part of this country. Keep in mind as you travel it is great to be flexible and consider all the additional attractions that may be just off the main highway. If for some reason you may not be able to travel at this time; health, wealth, or family, whatever, for the price of this adventure guide you can come along with us.We will be leaving Huntington, West Virginia, but you can join us anywhere along the way. We will be including web sites, descriptions, and side trips, purchased as a separate book.We have made a trip of over 11,000 miles but it can be separated into 3 smaller trips or adventures. The first adventure can be from the east coast to Great Falls MT. From Great Falls you can drive Interstate 90 to Seattle, WA, and then get back with our adventure at this city. This would be Trip A.The second mini-trip adventure is from Calgary BC to Whitehorse, YK Territory then to Vancouver, BC return to Highway 1 and back to Calgary. The places to see along the way are included in our adventure guide. This is Trip B.The third part of the adventure is Alaska it's self. It can begin in Anchorage, Fairbanks, or any city you decide to fly into or even arrive by boat. Our adventure guide provides information and directions for traveling throughout the state. This will be Trip C. The adventure can actually start as you review this fact and fun filled adventure guide. But before you grab your keys and pack your car for two days, two weeks, two months and head out to explore the natural beauty and diversity of the US and Canada use this guide to plan your adventure. Some of the most fun of the trip can be planning, before you ever start the car.Get some good road maps and plot your route to join ours. Do a little on-line surfing and see what others have to say about places and attractions. Check out the local book store for background on the things that most interest you. Visit the suggested web sites provided in this adventure guide.Volumes could be written about the many sites and attractions mentioned and there are a heap of fascinating details, and locations which must be saved for another day. This adventure guide isn't meant to be your sole travel guide and companion, it can be, instead we hope it will act as a spring board, compelling you to find out more and make your adventure uniquely your own.As we get ready for our adventure I am reminded of two western songs, the first is "On the Road Again" by Willie Nelson and the second is "Happy Trails to You," by Roy Rogers, and these are our hope for you. Come along with us for the adventure of a lifetime....
