But her quest for perfection is derailed when her boyfriend leaks secret pictures of her to the entire school—pictures no one was ever meant to see. Making matters worse, her parents might be getting divorced and now her perfect family is falling apart. For the first time, Vivi feels like a complete and utter failure. Then she gets a job working at the community pool, where she meets a new circle of friends who know nothing about her past. That includes Evan, a gorgeous and intriguing guy who makes her want to do something she never thought she’d do again—trust. For the first time in her life, Vivi realizes she can finally be whoever she wants. But who is that? While she tries to figure it out, she learns something they never covered in her AP courses: that it’s okay to be less than perfect, because it’s our imperfections that make us who we are. E. Katherine Kottaras once again captures what it means to be a teenager in The Best Possible Answer.

Book Synopsis Trans/forming Feminisms by : Krista Scott-Dixon
Download or read book Trans/forming Feminisms written by Krista Scott-Dixon and published by Canadian Scholars’ Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this groundbreaking anthology, feminist scholar and trans ally Krista Scott-Dixon takes on the challenge of moving us towards more inclusive transfeminist politics. The 30 essays reflect academic, personal and political perspectives of contributors from Canada, the US and Europe. These include well-known activists and scholars in the field -- Bobby Noble, Barbara Findlay, Miqqi Alicia/Michael Gilbert, Kyle Scanlon, Talia Bettcher, Joshua Goldberg and Caroline White -- as well as fresh new voices. The book is divided into four sections to highlight the intersections between trans and feminist ideas. "Narratives and Voices" builds on the feminist idea of consciousness-raising, speaking from individual experiences and questions of how to represent oneself in language. "Identities and Alliances" takes up questions of how identities are produced, maintained and reproduced, and how diverse identities can work collectively. "Inclusion and Exclusion" examines the notion of "safe spaces" and "women-only spaces" in the context of trans challenges such as the Kimberly Nixon v. Vancouver Rape Relief Society case and the entrance policies of the Michigan Womyn's Music Festival. "Shelter and Violence" explores the service-provision policies of shelters, as well as the sex-gender system that supports transphobic abuse. The section introductions contextualize the discussion and identify key issues. The collection concludes with suggestions for future research and activism.

Book Synopsis Autism and the Environment by : Institute of Medicine
Download or read book Autism and the Environment written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2008-03-12 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) constitute a major public health problem, affecting one in every 150 children and their families. Unfortunately, there is little understanding of the causes of ASD, and, despite their broad societal impact, many people believe that the overall research program for autism is incomplete, particularly as it relates to the role of environmental factors. The Institute of Medicine's Forum on Neuroscience and Nervous System Disorders, in response to a request from the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services, hosted a workshop called "Autism and the Environment: Challenges and Opportunities for Research." The focus was on improving the understanding of the ways in which environmental factors such as chemicals, infectious agents, or physiological or psychological stress can affect the development of the brain. Autism and the Environment documents the concerted effort which brought together the key public and private stakeholders to discuss potential ways to improve the understanding of the ways that environmental factors may affect ASD. The presentations and discussions from the workshop that are described in this book identify a number of promising directions for research on the possible role of different environmental agents in the etiology of autism.

Download or read book Strengthening Communities with Neighborhood Data written by G. Thomas Kingsley and published by Urban Institute Press. Book excerpt: Efforts to address the problems of distressed urban neighborhoods stretch back to the 1800s, but until relatively recently, data played little role in forming policy. It wasn't until the early 1990s that all of the factors necessary for rigorous, multifaceted analysis of neighborhood conditions--automated government records, geospatial information systems, and local organizations that could leverage both--converged. Strengthening Communities documents that convergence and details its progress, plotting the ways data are improving local governance in America.
