Book Synopsis The Arabic Manuscript Tradition by : Adam Gacek
Download or read book The Arabic Manuscript Tradition written by Adam Gacek and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-07-31 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Covering the entire spectrum of Arabic manuscripts, and especially the handwritten book, this book consists of a glossary of technical terms and a bibliography. The technical terms, collected from a variety of sources, embrace a vast range of topics dealing with the making and reading (studying) of Arabic manuscripts. They include: the Arabic scripts, penmanship, writing materials and implements, the make-up of the codex, copying and correction, decoration and bookbinding. A similar coverage is reflected in the bibliography. In view of the fact that, as yet, there is no concise monograph on Arabic manuscripts in the English language, this book is an important contribution to this field. And, since Arabic manuscripts represent an enormous resource for research, this work is an indispensable reference for all students of Islamic civilization.

This is a view from the inside about economic realities, suggesting ways to understand economic history in a social and cultural context. The first of its kind, it will be of vital use to all students of the area.

This book was released on 2009-04 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of the works of ancient Arabic poets encompasses the original three volumes of the collection by Ahlwardt from 1902 and 1903. The substantial introductions and comments are in German while the works referenced appear in the original Arabic. The three volumes contain material from al Asma Iyyat of al Asmai, al Ajjah, az Zafayan, and Ruba ben al Ajjaj, poets of the pre-Islamic period. This title, bound into one volume for affordability, is increasingly difficult to acquire. The selections of the poems themselves are essential reading for any historian of Arabic poetry while the comments of the editor add interpretive value to the original material from the hands of the poets themselves.

Book Synopsis Ottoman Manufacturing in the Age of the Industrial Revolution by : Donald Quataert
Download or read book Ottoman Manufacturing in the Age of the Industrial Revolution written by Donald Quataert and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-10-03 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book uncovers the rich, fascinating and complex world of Ottoman manufacturing and manufacturers in the age of the European industrial revolution. Using a wealth of sources from Ottoman, European and American archives, Professor Donald Quataert explores the technological methods of producing cotton cloth, wool cloth, yarn and silk, how these changed throughout the nineteenth century, the organisation of home and workshop production and trends in the domestic and international markets. By focusing on textile manufacturing in homes and small workshops, the author reveals a dynamism that refutes traditional notions of a declining economy in the face of European expansion. He shows how manufacturers adopted a variety of strategies, such as reduced wages and low technology inputs, to confront European competitors, protect their livelihoods and retain domestic and international customers.

Book Synopsis Sovereign Individuals of Capitalism (RLE Social Theory) by : Bryan S. Turner
Download or read book Sovereign Individuals of Capitalism (RLE Social Theory) written by Bryan S. Turner and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-08-21 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this sequel to their acclaimed The Dominant Ideology Thesis, the authors develop their analysis of the social and cultural underpinnings of modern capitalism. They confront a central assumption of western culture: namely, that the individual is sovereign, and that capitalism above all other economic forms depends on individualism. These ideas have an unbroken history from Alexis de Tocqueville to Milton Friedman. The paradox of the modern world is that the moral emphasis on the individual is contradicted by the actual organization of economy and society. The authors suggest that individualism and capitalism have no enduring or necessary relationship. Their linkage is entirely accidental and was confined to one particular historical period in the West. Against the background of what they term the Discovery of the Individual, the authors show how individualism gave capitalism a particular shape, and capitalism in turn highlighted the possessive features of the individual. Oriental capitalism and late capitalism in the West bear no particular relationship to individualism; indeed, they flourish best in the absence of individualistic culture. Collectivism increasingly dominates both economic and social life. These issues once informed the sociological enterprise, but have not been systematically addressed in recent times. This book revives the classical tradition of the historical and comparative analysis of culture and economy in capitalist society, in the context of the late twentieth-century world.
